The homebrew geeks new England version of the artificer is a real good replacement. It actually makes you feel like a tinkerer. Plus one of the subclasses you get power armor and I can never pass that chance up
We had a hilarious session where I sent an assassin after each party member. The artificer with power armor got ambushed inside his workshop. Round #0: (surprise round) artificer gets hit with a crossbow bolt. Ouch. Round #1: artificer locks the only door to the room behind him, drops the key down his shirt, then summons his power armor. (one out of three attacks by the assassin actually hits) Round #2: casts an AC buff. (none of the assassin's attacks hit) Round #3: summons his weapon. (assassin *still* can't so much as scratch him, and is reconsidering his life's choices) Round #4: decides that this is a controlled environment, and thus the perfect opportunity to try out a new warlock spell from his multi-class: *Demonic Infusion.* Artificer is now 8 ft tall and his power armor has grown "horns" that look like a forklift. (assassin is now curled up in a ball behind the workbench, sucking on his thumb and crying)

Artificer & Wizard Classes are both the hardest classes to master requiring a High Intelligence state, You're just trading in One hard class for another Hard Class
I use them on 3 rocks where I use light and it's the flash part of a flash bang, as I charge in. One rock has a recorded message condescendingly distracting the enemy and one free slot.
Artificers are definitely terrifying XD I build an artificer that could deal 5 D8 + 15 and impose disadvantage on every strike by level 5 without expending spell slots or using any real weapons, it was fun

I mean, at level 1 most classes have no special capabilities. Artificers are great though, did a Druid/Artificer character one game, became an agent of pure chaos.
Magical tinkering can be used as a projector, a way to make a map very easily, you can make a rainbow, make someone's helmet glow to make them half blind, make yourself a fake gang tattoo to get into a pub... Yade yada
i mean, you could make an interesting character instead of caring only about the level? beats any campaign and usually makes you more friends, which as we know, is a spell most dnd players dont have
In my campaign, I ran a sling and used magic stones for 3 rocks and the sling, causing the total damage to be 41 bludgeoning damage every turn since it’s a cantrip additional turn and we steamrolled all the enemies for a bit till they nerfed me to one rock per sling throw
Agreed. When writing the series, we just thought since most people don’t start at that level, and since you’ve got so few skills by this point, Roasting level 1 classes would be a fun way to do it. May consider doing higher level roasts, if people are interested.

There's an entire gang of rapscalions oncoming, load the grape, all of them are pushed off the stairs and die from falling damage One of them is charging up the stairs, set bayonet and charge. He bleeds out waiting for a cleric because Hexblade Curse wounds can't be treated, and because Booming Blade would finish him off if he tried to leave anyways. Just as the Founding Fathers intended.
I found that giving a free Lv1 infusion as the "journeyman's work" is a cool thing to do. Tho I restrict it to the weaker options, that way your player actually gets to use them without feeling bad.
I use magical tinkering all the time in RP and if mixed with other things, can become extremely useful. If you can take the feat servo crafting, it's basically a familiar with limitless mental connection range and see through it at any range and even speak through it. When you have a book or a piece of paper, you can rapidly replace the picture on it to match what your seeing, and if you have a Homunculus, technically it's strong enough to carry your servo, meaning you have a fully functional drone seeing as you can control your Homunculus through your servo, allowing a limitless range drone that can scout better than all but the most stealthy of rogue's.
Good DM. Everyone should experience it once, but experiencing the abject nothing that happens during levels 1 and 2 shouldn't be repeated. The only exception is if your DM is playing hardball, high lethality, darwinist character generation, and getting hit by that greataxe and getting unlucky actually does mean you're rolling a new character. But, people don't often like this.

My Level 1 Artificer wears heavy armor, a shield, fires (or ""catapults"") small 5 pound steel cannon balls from his hip mechanism aka magical rail gun and has a braclet with a built-in barbed wire whip (Thornwhip) with which he garrottes enemies closer to him. Oh, and if the dumb fuck barbarian charges into a bunch of enemies and goes down he can spray a silver mist into their mouth to get back up. Yeah, cant wait for level two.
I'm currently playing a Goliath Barbarian who found some ancient Dwarven schematics from House Canith of the original Warforged. Got great rolls, so strength and intelligence are both very high. I'm gonna use the knowledge I gain from the schematics to multiclass into artificier once I hit Barbarian 6, because I'll have the first two levels of bear totem warrior, and then go Battle Smith after that. It's gonna be like Heavy and Medic from TF2 were polymerized. And instead of a Steel Protector, my DM is gonna let me make a shield that is gonna be the only thing I tinker on. It's balanced because It'll be so heavy I won't be able to carry other weapons. By level 20 It'll be the ultimate combo weapon and defense.
Used magical tinkering to make a 2 second loop of a footstep to distract a guard then snuck away. Placed a stone under a table to make someone think their food was sour. A LOOOOOT of possibilities.
Now imagine this class setup. Enforcer - Soldier, Raider, Captain, Ranger, Inquisitor, and Scribe. All part of the same class. You can mix and match the different sub classes to get EXACTLY what kind of character you want. Soldier is a basic fighter or knight. With standard level 1 type abilities. Raider is an expert in heavy armor, shields, explosives and aoe damage. Captain has a special ability, like the paladin, he's a protector, but the base skill of a captain is callee "Selfless Movement" in which he can teleport into the path of an oncoming attack on an innocent or an ally, absorbing the complete damage. Want to use this ability more? Toss a child into a goblin den and wait. Free xp
And dont worry, you dont get two essential creation spells until the campaign is over with. You’ll have better luck with slave labor than with the spells fabricate and creation

You're a lot less glass Cannon the most spell casters, even at level 1. Are spellcaster started with 5 HP, I started with 10

Better survival rate then a necromancer apprentice but your surviving body parts tend to come in smaller pieces.
