  • Trying to find the right vinyl cutter can feel confusing. At least that's how it felt when we compared the Graphtec and Summa cutters in our showroom. We talked to both manufacturers and tested the machines to find out why you might want to buy one over the other. Check out the differences!

Summa software integration is not like the graphtec ease of use within Illustrator. We use both in our workflow and it's hard to say which is better. WHEN the summa reads registration marks it can cut an entire roll without being interrupted. The reality is that's not always the case, it's then a pain to work with.

We appreciate your feedback! Software is something we did not cover in this video. Both Summa and Graphtec have their strengths and challenges depending on the workflow and task at hand.

Summa for window tint? Can you set it up not to cut all the way through the film and leave the release liner intact?

Hi @j-money, Yes - all of the Summa S-Series roll cutters are designed to cut window tint. Setting knife exposure and cutting pressure are key to cutting tint. Check out these videos from Summa - th-cam.com/video/Cm6Awbiixyg/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/kkK9lcrL0-4/w-d-xo.html

Yes, on both machines, on a newer model fc9000-160 Graphtec, I've been running Contour (kiss) cutting of over 250" or 6350mm. for Tandem vehicle stripes, with Graphtec type 4 marks ever 36" very little deflection, if all the rollers are set to full pressure.
to ITC supplies, we shouldn't be using the term Die Cutting in this industry, it is technically a completely different process. A better term is perforated if its attached, or Cut Through if completely cut out.

That all depends on the size of your cutter. If you are cutting a 54" job you will need to print on media that is wider than 54" and need a cutter that is wider than 54". Then you will truly be able to experience the bliss of cutting a 54x107" panel. -Dan
