When I met Maria Callas she was in the beginning of her vocal career. She had refused to debut at the Met singing Butterfly which Rudolph Bing had offered her, but accepted to do her American debut at the Lyri Opera in Chicago. Together with N. Rescigno, the Maestro there at the time, she made a glorious triumph singing one of her star roles, Norma of Bellini. I had been hired by the Lyric for that opening season of the Lyric Opera. Rosina in the Barger was another of her star roles which she created much success as the leading soprano at that time. Here she demonstrates why the success. We miss Maria Callas very much.
@@aaronmalone7065 The irony is that I actually work at Lyric Opera of Chicago myself, in the orchestra. He did not say in what capacity he was hired there. Probably a janitor...
Perfect, The character of des Grieux suits Kaufmann and he embodies the part with perfection. Bravo and if the stage direction is in order the result could be a wonderful performance of the opera, of course with the right Manon.
My God! Some of the comments on here are so vicious. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Jonas Kaufmann's magnificent voice in this clip. It's a gorgeous sound to listen to and I really don't need to analyse how he produces it unlike you ridiculous "know-it-alls." He's had a much bigger career than you lot at any rate so he must be doing something right!
I really love him in so many different operas. And while he sings as brilliantly as ever, I think the style is just wrong for Manon and Massenet. He's fantastic as Puccini's des Grieux, but the finesse required for French style is not present here.
First of all, I want to say that Kaufmann is a great singer. I heard him many times at the Met. When he sang Werther, it was being recorded and he crooned the whole role because he know the technicians were going to fiddle with the dials. 4000 people in the audience, who made an effort to see him live, and paid good money, felt cheated. This aria he fades out to a croon to much. He sings for the technicians. His Don Jose, which wasn’t recorded, was magnificent. He was on the level of the great Jon Vickers. Sadly, Corelli, who performed his whole repertoire at the Met, did not sing Don Jose. Pity.
IF JONAS KAUFMANN WAS A PRIEST, I WOULD LIKE TO BE AS MANON TO MAKE HIM FALL IN TEMPTATION. BECAUSE I AM REALLY IN LOVE WITH THIS MAGNIFICENT ARTIST...!!
There is something profoundly "not right" about his sound nowadays but I can't put my finger on it. It's throaty, but not all the time. It takes a while for the notes to speak, which seems "unright". Odd. I've ever liked it but can't quite decide why. With most singers I can pin-pont it pretty quickly, but this guys "new" voice stumps me.
He makes certain sounds where, at times, I think the poor guy is going to swallow his tongue. Have you seen the vid on YT where a younger Kauffman sings from The Student Prince? It is sublime. Cheers
What a travesty , Des Grieux is supposed to be very young in the opera , not sound like a wannabe baritone . There must be something fundamentally wrong with his technique if he can't sing pianissimi at his age .
...a non fitting voice. The great Tenors wore their voices like suits. This singer is a handsome man with a non fitting voice - suit. Many call that any positive way you like. My respect. This doesn’t make his singing any better. Mr.Kaufmann used to sound beautifully lyrical. Todays voice is dreadfully let the wrong direction. However the show must go on. Non mi piace
His sound remains all the time throaty which is even more annoying when he attempts to sing piano. No height on his sound, no finesse and no vocal freedom at all. Everything is pushed. Really mediocre.

Он ужасен! Его горловой придавленный звук просто убивает!. КАК он может нравиться?

How does a video of Jonas Kaufman demonstrate the success of Maria Callas?
@@premanadibecause jerks like this hijack EVERY opera post talking about Callas. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Ascoltate Distefano e Pavarotti.....poi ne parliamo. Questa voce da baritenore manca di squillo , voce troppo cupa.
vocalità poco adatta à questo capolavoro .
non mi piace affatto .
