I always cosidered Roberto Alagna to have been the best in rendering this magnificently beautiful aria. Jonas Kaufmann is right up there with Alagna. Superb rendition.👏
This is a rehearsal and only one take. Mr Kaufmann, like any other tenor who wants to preserve his voice, not just for the recording session but for longevity, will want to pace himself. There can be no doubt that he is more than capable of issuing the ringing high C of 'La Speranza' anytime he wishes. You only have to hear the power and tone of his 'Chi Son!' to know he possesses all the attributes to do this comfortably. High Cs are thrilling but middle and lower notes are also vital and Jonas Kaufmann colours all these quite beautifully with his unusually rich and dark timbre.
Our son did that for a NATS competition this past weekend and was also able to hit the high C easily. It's quite powerful. th-cam.com/video/DmKmL16_i78/w-d-xo.html

Everyone here complaining about no high c. HE HAS THE C. he probably didn't sing it here at the conductors request, but you can listen to other recordings of him doing this and he sings the hell out of it. that c is a godly note for him.
Then why release this version for public consumption if it is not representative of his capabilities? If it is 'Take One' then fine, but as a Promo? Hard to explain.
I agree with you ! For all those ignorant "High C-Freaks": Here's the link: ..../watch?v=6zD9nGOsWXE ! Kaufmann is singing a great High C - live and in person !
First of all, it's a rehearsal, so it's understandable that he marks the highest note. Secondly, Caruso himself transposed the aria down a step because he no longer had a high C, and Puccini had no objection. Many great tenors transpose this aria down a step so that the highest note becomes B flat.
***** I stand corrected; thank you. His recording of "Salut, demeure chaste e pure," for example, contains a magnificent high C. However, his 1906 recording of "Che gelida manina" is transposed down a half step, so that the climactic high note is B natural. That does not take away from the beauty of the performance. Puccini himself authorized the transposition, and it is used frequently enough that the transposition is included in the published orchestra parts. The transposition down is only a half step, not a whole step as I erroneously wrote. You are of course right that he had a high C. (I am sometimes wrong, but I do try not to be stupid!)
❤️❤️❤️🎶❤️❤️❤️
BRAVO!!!!!! Amazing Performance!! As for the naysayers regarding the C, I have no doubt it was your choice, not ability that made the decision! You are amazing to listen to sir! Thank you for your art!!!
For all of u that are arguing over the high c, this is just a footage of his recording, and this is one of the few takes of the song in a roll, he is saving his voice. th-cam.com/video/kY3LPb6AZtg/w-d-xo.html. In this trailor video of his debut, he goes for it and sings the high c on 9:15. So calm the heck down and be generous to a singer who is trying to keep his instrument healthy.

ninia semira Why should a "young delicate poet" not have a masculine voice? Btw Kaufmann is more known for beeing sensitive with his roles than for beeing macho-like.
ninia semira I understand your point. But art would be dead if artists always would follow rules or traditions. So why not respect different approaches?
If you like more "masculine" voices singing light roles like Rodoldo is your right,I don't like that. For me the german recording of La Bohème with Lucia Popp and Francisco Araiza that I found in SPOTIFY is one of the best, despite is not in the original libreto's language.Klaus Florian Vogt is the best wagnerian tenor of today for me.
There are many excellent recordings of this aria and each singer interpets it the way he feels it. Jonas Kaufmann has an excpetionally beautiful Spinto tenor voice and top C's are not a problem for him, but he is very careful to look after his voice,, so why sing the top C in a rehearsa ?. Perhaps more than any other tenor currently singing, Jonas has a voice which is instantly recognisable, the richness of tone of a baritone, with ringing top notes, and his ablity to "carress notes" for greater emotional impact which is rare in opera singers, a technique used more with non classic singers, no better example than Sinatra.. Much to enjoy in this recording, obviouslty some listeners are so absorbed with the top C, they have faled to listen to the rest of 4 mins 50 seconds of superb singing.
I have always found utterly disrespectful to disparage the work of professionals such as Mr. Kaufmann. He might not be the best one ever, true, but he certainly does a good damn job. If all you want to hear is a high C and the same opera legends, there are plenty of recordings to consult. Myself as an amateur pianist can only imagine how much work one has to put to arrive to this level of proficiency. Even if you can do it better, have some respect and at least enjoy as much as these musicians are enjoying their art.
As an amateur pianist, there may be pianists whose technique you do not find sufficient. You may think that no matter how good they work there are still a bit overrated. The problem isn't whether or not Kaufman hits a high C. What I criticize as an amateur singer is that a singer with such bad technique (and there is a lot to be said about his technic) became such a star when excellent singers never manage to get a contract.
@@eustochium2275 you're right Kaufman is woefully less vocally prodigious than any mid tier Italian tenor was 50 years ago. Additionally even today im sure there's many more deserving tenors today. +Redeem the Nation ...more like he just can't sing Puccini very well, I found his Nessun Dorma far too stiff and heavy sounding. There's no sweet lightness in his tonality at all, I respect Kaufmann alot.
