Stress and sleep deprivation nearly killed me. Broccoli, carrots, almonds and walnuts, along with minimizing processed foods and sugar, lowering salt, and having a loving circle of family and friends are why I’m still alive.
And having a silly sense of humor and walking at least 4 miles a day, even with my walker.
Finally, there is my addiction to Talking With Docs. Thanks, guys!

Love when you talk about prevention. 1: Nutrition-You are what you eat, so eat a balanced diet. 2: Exercise-Your body was designed to move, so move it in a significant way everyday. 3:Stress management-Stress is a killer, so learn to manage your stress. Prayer, Meditation, Etc. Whatever works for you. 4: Sleep-This is when your body repairs itself. We live in a world that doesn't value sleep, but everyone should.

Would love an episode focused on people with disabilities. Those of us with physical and sensory disabilities. Most lifestyle change education is focused mostly on those who are ‘able’. Many of us don’t have the environments, resources/tools, education to support lifestyle changes as a person with a disability. There are so many assumptions and obstacles. Thank you. We want to be healthy too!!! There are not many docs / educators who understand these challenges. (They don’t know what they don’t know). There are “adaptive” physical activities that are shared, but there isn’t a focus on the lifestyle, daily practices. There is a higher lever of long-term health issues we would like to prevent!!

I am 65. I became a "health nut" at age 14. 51 years ago. 1972. When there was no internet, no you tube videos, no Whole Foods Markets. I taught myself. I read books, educated myself, and found a tiny health food store on a university campus near my home. Exercise has been my life since then, and still is today. I have very considerably progressed in my health knowledge since then with so much on the internet and youtube at our fingertips, along with the Life Extension Foundation. So I ask, why don't people know about health TODAY? Why does it seem to be getting worse? There is really no excuse.

@Char Florida Because people do not want to do the work. They have been raised on instant gratification for everything while creating excuses for the ill health they CAN control. People want a pill to fix all their ailments, they do not want to put the effort in that’s required. As a result, we do not have a health care system, we have a sick care system, and guess what - it’s more profitable. Unless each person makes the necessary change for themselves, nothing will improve.

Agree with Dr Marrone. As an adult cardiology NP we need to start education in preschool where habits are being made. All of the things she talks about needs to be taught and carried out with parents teaching their children and schools continuing the education. Also children’s school lunches aren’t even healthy. This all has to start at an early age...

Totally agree. One problem at least from living in the poorest county in Texas for most of my life. Much easier & cheaper to feed kids $1 burgers and fries vs. getting fruits/veggies that costs 5, 10 times that. There's definitely a child obesity problem in that area no doubt, not to mention other chronic issues kids in general should in no way be experiencing. The day we make healthy food affordable (among other tweaks) the better for all.

Thank you for making this video! I’m an RN and starting nurse practitioner school in the fall. Tools like this sound like they’d be valuable once I graduate and start practicing. In my experience, around 75% of the patients that I’ve cared for are sick because of their poor choices. My heart is with them and no one deserves to get sick! I just wish that younger people would listen when we tell them about the dangers of poor choices.
Healthy things I do every day for wellness:
    1. Use a standing desk at work and don’t sit all day
    2. Journaling as a part of stress management
    3. Incorporate extra fruit and vegetables into my diet with smoothies and juicing, making soups, and adding other veggie pulp to everything I can think of (dinner today was pancakes made from overripe bananas, eggs, beet purée, and a little oat flour.)
    4. Take smaller portions and Stop eating before I feel full
    5. Wear sunscreen every day and moisturize my skin
    6. Go to bed and wake up at the same time most days, even when I’m not working
Unhealthy things that I DON’T do everyday
    1. Instead of salt, I use herbs, spices, and salt substitutes (NuSalt)
    2. No caffeine. Not just a little cup of coffee or a soda; NO caffeine (my blood pressure went from 120/80 to 110/70 from probably these two things)
    3. I don’t Smoke, use recreational drugs, and rarely consume alcohol.
I am not perfect by any means! I still have a long way to go to lose weight and improve my cardiovascular health with good choices. However, by making small, almost incomprehensible changes, I’m able to “trick” myself into making good choices that are so subtle that they feel easy to do.

I’m in the dental aspect of health care and we always inform our patients how to maintain a healthy oral ph, reduce decay, reduce erosion, foods and beverages that appear benign yet have irreversible damage to the tooth structure etc. Plus we spend time- the key is TIME- educating our patients how to effectively remove biofilm and pathogens.
My primary doctor only wants to order tests and have the tests reviewed. If the numbers are in a bad area we are shamed. Yes, shamed. We are never given health advice from our primary provider.
Always keep learning, stay ahead of what we learned in DDS training or MD training. That’s gets us out of the gate but we need to be relevant

They suffer disproportionately from major health problems. They only have fast food available to them.

For decades I did nothing good for myself---ate the goods I love and of course they are all the worst ones for health. And I ate lots of them all day and night long. I did no exercise. Then one day a year and a half ago I decided to change that, knowing I needed to not do it for a month, or 6 or a year. It's something I need to do for the rest of my days, because if I don't, the rest of my days will end much sooner than later. My own fault for not doing things sooner to try to prevent the issues I have.
It is ironic that the 4 things that kill the most people can be avoided (in most cases) by our own actions. My own laziness, lack of discipline and love for food (ok, addiction) would be my undoing. I had a choice to make.

So glad for this perspective. It frustrates me to see a doc prescribe meds and then not expect the patient to change and keep the same dosage after each visit. Its like docs expect the patient not to change

I just bought a book ‘Outlive’ by Peter Attia MD. It was recommended to me by a financial planner, not a doctor! I’m sure you’ll all love this treatise and I think it might be a good recommendation for every one of your patients.

Wow, you can see the vibrancy & excitement from Dr. Marrone. Just makes you wanna listen & do as she advises. Not to say our TWD docs are slackin' - you all are just as motivating! So let's start with the big one. Quit smoking (cold turkey) - coming up 3 years in November. Spring has sprung/summer approaching and have started my swimming pool visits. Eating the greens and fruits where at least on the greens side, feeling I may develop 🐰ears! I'm sure these little 'health deposits' will pay dividends in the long run. Keep up the great work and the vids coming! Looking forward to seeing more from Dr. Marrone. 😎👍

My most current lifestyle change was an amicable divorce. The reduced stress has resulted in better eating habits, improved sleep and more time to do the things I’m passionate about such as volunteering at an animal shelter.

You guys are the tribute band of medicine and humor (changing/recurring members) but it works out! Seriously though being creative reduces stress big time. Anytime you are immersed in an activity helps with stress. Docs: Any idea how creativity (art/music/dance/crafts/sewing/cooking) stacks up to meditation?

From what I understand standard doctoral degrees have literally no training in nutrition. They get tons of training in RXs. Yet my GP keeps telling me eat low fat.. I did that when the American Heart Association published the Great American Food Pyramid in the 70s . Told us to eat 6 items from the bottom line, all carbs. I did that my whole life, now I'm obese like 42% of the rest of America, thanks a lot. I'm glad chiropractors are picking up the ball and getting degrees in nutrition. My PC hates when I say no thanks, we know better now, it's low carb for me.

In my 20s I started attending science fiction conventions.
By my 40s I had come to realize we fans were an exceedingly unhealthy lot in general. Bookish. Loners mostly.
By this point I had discovered the vast + of regular gym attendance and exercise. The vast majority of my people hadn’t.
I had discovered the basket of healthy eating. Most hadn’t.
I had seen, first hand, destructive eating habits.
I had seen been to gaming nights where we ordered in food. I got Chinese, without big sugar, without big carbs. They, each, had ordered super high carbs, and super high fat (which I think of as carbs).
These gaming night folk all had serious health conditions. Allergies. Diabetes. Depression. Morbidly obese. Plain obese.
I had tried to share a recipe for homemade soup. And got shot down. They didn’t like lentils. They didn’t like beans. Fibre should be in your food. Period.
Over the decades I started to lose acquaintances. And I realized. Lifestyle matters so much. I’d be surviving so many of them.
Because I made good lifestyle choices. Diet. Exercise. Stress management. They all matter.
I urge anyone reading this to make one positive change today. As simple as regular soda to diet soda. (That one, I got one woman to make.) whatever. A daily 5 minute walk.
Something. Anything. One small change can give you benefits.

Unfortunately not all doctors are as enlightened. I was suffering badly with nerve pain, and after sending me for several diagnostic test, my family docs final words to me were "you'll just have to endure." After doing my own research I learned that vegetarians need to supplement with B12 or they could experience a variety of symptoms including nerve issues (and yes, I did tell my doc that I went vegetarian 2 years prior). When I asked him if my issue could be related to nutrition the response was a firm, confident, dismissive "NO." After taking high doses of B12 for several weeks my pain has completely disappeared. I don't blame doctors if they don't get the training they need, I blame the profession. But if you don't know something and pretend that you do just to come off as decisive, you're doing your patients and yourself a disservice. A dose of humility is what your patients deserve.
