- This week in episode 44 we chat to Crispin Gray from 90s UK punk rockers Daisy Chainsaw. We talk about their sadly short lived run as Daisy Chainsaw that coined the massive hit 'Love your Money' as well as future projects and of course all things 90s!
Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation!
That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.
We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.
If you are into 1990s guitar music or just a music lover in general then this is the podcast for you!

Let us know your Daisy Chainsaw / Queenadreena memories? COMMENT BELOW
I saw The Word performance and had the ‘Love Sick Pleasure’ cassette, and then one day bunked off school and took the train into London to go and mooch around Camden and bought ‘Eleventeen’ on CD. I can’t remember the name of the shop.. (On the left, just before the bridge). Sadly, I was a bit young to see the madness of the gigs. (I was 12, maybe 13 when Daisy Chainsaw was all going on).
@@Steaminlidz The Word performance is pretty legendary right?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcastYeah, it seemed to capture the chaos pretty well
First time I saw Daisy Chainsaw was at Happy Jax on Crucifix Lane and they blew my mind. I met Katie Jane in the loos at the Dome not long after - she was warming up before the show, seemed really shy which I remember thinking was endearing and just made me love them more.
She’s quite a shy person ‘IRL’
Oh wow, I was not expecting this! .... I do have a Daisy Chainsaw memory.. but on with the podcast for now.
@rocket69218 - if you've not seen it already, Philly Peroxide has an interview from a few years back.
Loved every minute of this interview......what spot on fella Crispin Gray is!
Saw Daisy Chainsaw at the ULU in 1992 with Sheep On Drugs supporting. Don't remember much of the gig do remember an edgy excitable vibe! Was in a fanzine with my mate, we used to write off to various people! I Wrote to Crispin in 1991 and he replied in hand written (same type as DC text on their releases). Had it for years then vannished! Used to hang out with Richard Adams a fair bit a few years ago, we once went Raving to Laurent Garnier with J from Five.....another story to be told!
Glad you enjoyed it friend and we need to find out what happened with your night out with J from 5! 🤘🏻
I grew up near the Garsides in a tiny cluster of English villages and Crispin was a role model to me for my teen years, and later, part of the scene in which I mingled, putting on gigs etc. culminating in me hosting Queenadreena at KoKo. In fact, Crispin still has one of my blouses...peach frilly chiffon...from a session playing Bowie vinyls and dressing up. I live abroad now, but loved seeing you here doll! Cat x
Love that, what lovely memories! Are you asking for your blouse back?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Nah it suited him so much better than me
@@CateBaum 🤘
I saw Queenadreena supporting Bush at the Hammersmith Palais March 1st 2000.
They were really good in sound n sight..
Still got the ticket and they never took the stub off it on the way in.
It was one of those days/nights that just went perfect . Absolutely out of it on performance enhancers, smoking the good stuff in the corner at the back along with a few other indulgers ( Couldn’t do that stuff now , we had it good )
Still remember the girl I was chatting to, Gemma from Bromley..
We lived it..
Smoking doobies in dark corners of pubs and clubs is part of a bygone era! Sounds like a good night 🤘🏻
Loved it, thanks guys... enjoyed that one a lot. It wasn't mentioned in the conversation as a band they played with, but I saw Daisy Chainsaw supporting Carter USM! 10th Feb 1991 at South Parade Pier (Southsea) I don't remember that much about the gig to be honest but I remember it being loud and pretty shambolic in a good way. My girlfriend at the time had the t-shirt (black with that original logo in white, where the 'D' has ears and 'C' has teeth) I'm sure I saw them again somewhere else a bit later but I might not have, it's a bit blurry (.. and no I wasn't on heroin Dave! 😂) it's just a long time ago. 😛
Sounds like everyone at these gigs was on something!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast 😂 I was pretty drunk.
I saw DAISY CHAINSAW in 1992 OSAKA,Japan.
Extra loud guitar sound,Skin headed Kaitie's scream...
Unforgiven concert.
I bought DAISY CHAINSAW 7inch and ALIEN AIRFORCE 7inch.
LOVE from Japan.
They were big in Japan right? Sounds like an epic gig!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast I think so.
Several music magazines recommended them.
Many pictures of Katie Jane Garside were on page.
@mochimochi8528 - yeah, she was bald when we saw Daisy Chainsaw in San Francisco in 1992! I bought the Alien Airforce CD. So on that 7 inch is included the song, Human, All Too Human, correct? (it's not included on the CD!)
Enjoying the pod cast guys
Thanks friend 🤘🏻
I saw Daisy Chainsaw at Slims in San Francisco in 1992 and have been a fan of every project Crispin’s been involved in. Alien Airforce is excellent. The CD is regaled with Crispin’s fun artwork. Thanks for the interview, gents.
How was the gig? Thanks for watching!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Fantastic show. Katie Jane revealed her bald head at set's culmination.
The Dutchess of York in Leeds was a great venue sadly missed ☹️
Another one bites the dust ☹️
If there’s one band I really regret not seeing it is Queenadreena. They really were a one off.
Great great band!
You and Crispin know! Nirvana was the only worthy band out of that grunge movement. Well okay shoehorn in Melvins, The Jesus Lizard...I saw Nirvana five times (twice before Nevermind, one in support of it, and two additional shows)My favorite band is The Fall. Rest peace-uh! Mark Edward Smith-uh!
5 times?! That’s pretty impressive! The Fall were a great great band too, RIP Mark E Smith indeed! 🤘🏻
Never saw Daisy Chainsaw as they were already gone by the time I was out at gigs on the regular, but I did get to see Queenadreena a number of times in London and at a disappointingly sparsely attended gig at the Fez club in Reading., fair play to them though, the size of audience didn’t make a difference to the intensity of the performance which was always operating at 11.
I note that Silverfish came up in the interview and Miss Rankine would be an excellent guest for the podcast as her musical output in silverfish, Ruby and as a member of Pigface definitely should be given more attention.
Noted! We will try to get her on! A sign of a great band is there reactions to smaller audiences, The Fez club was a great little venue 🤘🏻
Lukes talking sense, good on you mate
He’s always on the pulse!
I hate the Doors too , Neil!!!
Good man 😉
I saw them supporting Therapy? and Hole in '91. Daisy Chainsaw did a brilliant mad set, Therapy? rocked and Courtney Love's voice really annoyed me 😂.
Another great podcast.
Therapy and Hole?! What a f*cking lineup!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast I was lucky to grow up in a small university city. This podcast reminds me of amazing bands I saw as a teenager 🤘
@@lisad82648 I think we’re all enjoying remembering those heady days 🤘🏻
Thats wrong, Bowie got punched in the face from a friend who got jealous with him over a woman. Thats how his eye got damaged.
Good intel!
Common sense that Rishi should have stayed right to the end of the event. Daves talking like he knows the guy, If he does my apologise.
Pretty sure he doesn’t know him 😉
David Bowies eyes were not different colours one of them was permanently dilated so it looked like it was a different colour, it was the result of head injury
We need a definitive answer on this one! 🤘🏻
Politics he's like a child, that's a bit worrying considering he's the PM so how intelligent is he lol
The kids have been in charge for a long time!
I absolutley love blasting out Daisy Chainsaw on my stereo - it hits the spot in the 2020's more than ever. !
Better than most of the dirge around right?
Contraversially I think the best Daisy Chainsaw track was 'The Future Free'.
Great track!
@Owen-dc5jk - hard for me to choose, but Sleeping With Heaven on is my favorite on the second album.
