OR, if we use common sense, it makes a lot more sense that Zelensky realized that the Russians were gaining momentum on Donbass and did something desperate to draw forces away.
Alternatively, because Ukraine has a vested interest in not negotiating (at least their leadership seems to think that) it may make sense that they are willing to piss off the Russians by any means necessary so that they would be too angry to negotiate.

If Ukraine thinks that is offensive in Russia will force Russia to rotate its troops from Donbass to Kursk then they are wrong since Russia already has huge reserves. Russian forces will keep advancing in Donbass there will be no stopping. Ukraine should have used its reserves to plug the gaps in Toretsk, Pokrovsk and Vuhledar direction where Russian are making daily gains. Ukraine will probably make some more gains in Kursk but in week or two Russia will have readied its reserves and will launch a counter attack Russia has already been able to steady the frontlines and slow Ukraine advance.

Unfortunately, as we have seen in the past, Ukraine has fallen to their own propaganda. As stated by the west and pro-Ukranians (which ideology extends to the average Ukranian soldier who has access to internet) they believe Russia sent all they had into Ukraine and is using all of their army. Ukraine might believe that sending troops into Kursk will force Russia to redeploy troops from Ukraine into Kursk. This perhaps is wrong due to the fact these are separate conflicts. One thing is the soldiers Russia is using inside Ukraine on the SMO, and another completely different thing is them getting invaded inside their own country. Russia could deploy their entire army if they wanted to which wouldn't involve any soldier currently in the SMO.
This is just my take, but I don't think is too far out of reality.

This is a brigade strength incursion into pre 2014 Russian territory, i.e., it's not disputed who owns it. That creates possibilities legally for Russia. It changes a few things.
    1. Russia can request assistance from other CIS countries who signed mutual defence pacts with Russia. That's because UKR attacked territory covered by those treaties (which is one reason why the USA did not want UKR to do it - until perhaps now).
    2. The attack into the Kursk oblast meets the criteria set out by Russia's laws for the use of nuclear weapons. UKR forces are too close to a major Russian strategic asset, which if damaged could be devastating. The Kursk nuclear power station. I doubt Russia will, but to end this incursion quickly a sprinkling of low yield tactical nukes could be used against the bases and supply nodes supporting the incursion. Russia does not care what the West thinks now. The main restraint would be how Russia's friends would view it and the potential fallout - nuclear and political. China and India etc.
I do not think either is likely to be honest. Russia does not appear to want help from allies in the form of troops etc. Various reasons for that. I think they would consider using nukes if the situation calls for it, but they will avoid it if they can.
The reason for pointing these things out is to highlight how it's not just another attack. It could also make moving closer to a war footing possible and even nessessary. Russia is not in a state of war legally speaking and has not declared war. Its settings are still mostly peacetime ones, while declaring war allows a government a far greater scope of action. It's kind of like how a state of emergency does that, just much more so. It depends whether Russia already has more than enough war resources, or needs to ramp up again. It has already declared a state of emergency though. One step before declaring a state of war (the declaration is as much for domestic legal, civil, economic and political reasons as anything abroad).

I dont know what to think of this, this offensive instigated huge amounts of volunteers into the Russian armed forces. Playing on the home turf vs Russsians, w/o air support. The amount of jets I hear every day is impressive, in the end this offensive will be ground to a halt and then to dust, without territorial gains, and huge people casualities. That weeklong rush of good news for Ukraine is now at its end. The involved units, which already lost a full brigade worth of equipment, will shrink away further. There will be no one to replace them. In the Donbas the Russian army continues its offensive against the weakened and retreating Ukrainian units. New York, Chasiv Yar and Toretsk will soon be taken. There will soon be questions asked in Kiev, "What was the point?", to which no one will have a good answer. The Ukrainian commander in chief General Syrski may well have to leave over it even though the pressure to do the hopeless operation came, as The Times writes (archived), from elsewhere:
President Zelensky’s personal fingerprints are all over it. It’s been an open secret in Kyiv for many months that the president was pressing his military chiefs to launch a summer offensive.
Given Ukraine’s manpower and resources problems, they were hesitant. But Zelensky is desperate to reverse the narrative that Ukraine is losing its war.
Zelensky believed the Kursk operation would help to keep the war going with Russia failing over time and Ukraine becoming the winner. The Russian Duma announced today that there will not be another mobilization. A mobilization, and following unrest, is something Zelenski had hoped for. There will be no uprising in Russia because of the Kursk incursion, just an increase in nationalism.
The weeklong operations were certainly insufficient to do change the long-term narrative. The high it has caused in Kiev and elsewhere will soon make room for a deep depression.
Ukrainian troops that invaded Russia’s Kursk Region have taken heavy losses in men and Western-provided vehicles; the Financial Times (FT) has reported.
The attack that began last Tuesday involved units drawn from six Ukrainian frontline brigades, soldiers told the outlet. They also claimed to have caught the Russians by surprise, but quickly came under fire from drones and FAB glide bombs.
FAB glide bombs also reportedly “wiped out some Ukrainian troops and valuable western-provided equipment.” The group of fighters interviewed by the paper on Sunday said their Stryker - a wheeled US-made armored vehicle - was hd been demaged and had to be towed back into Ukraine where it would be cannibalized for parts.
According to the soldiers, the goal of the operation was to capture Russian territory as a bargaining chip and force Moscow to divert troops from the Donbass front.
“We can fight here and take their territory. And then negotiations can start, and we will have some land of theirs to trade for our land,” said one soldier, identified as ‘Denys.’
Ukraine reportedly stripped its frontline of troops to stage the Kursk incursion. According to the FT, the soldiers interviewed had fought in Kharkov and on the Donetsk front, at places such as Chasov Yar and a settlement called New York.
“These cities are already lost. They are only ours on the map. The Russians have wiped them out,” Denys said.

I'd like to ask where did you get the information about the minefields being cleared and the preparations for the Russian offensive on the Sumy? I haven't heard anything like this anywhere other than this channel, nothing like this is being said by the relevant Russian bloggers, the Russian General Staff, or Ukraine. Again, the question is, where did the information come from? It's all about stupidity, short-sightedness and corruption. It is this, and this alone, that explains the presence of conscripts in the threatened areas of the frontier who are not supposed to be engaged in combat at all. This is the reason why intelligence reports of a Ukrainian group gathering near Sumy have been ignored. If even the bloggers knew about this group, what do the minefields have to do with it?
Reflection of the Russian new attacks occurs not because of minefields but because of what has already happened saturation of the site with troops, small parts of the border troops minefields will not help if several battalion groups with the support of artillery go into a breakthrough.
I also want you to know that no one ever removes minefields completely, it's just stupid. Passages in minefields are made either when they are set up, kept secret and sometimes slightly adjusted, or immediately at the beginning of the offensive, often the night before. Nobody's going to clear the mines a month before the offensive, why?
Let's be honest, the Russians were very foolish to miss this breakthrough, and by the third year of the war, you could have predicted it would happen, right? At the same time, I personally have the absolute conviction that this breakthrough is a real agony of the Ukrainian authorities and a hopeless step. Those who have entered the Kursk region do not yet understand that few will come out of there, besides the last reserves burned will accelerate the fall of the defense in the east.
Generally speaking, both sides are competing in incompetence and error, and anyone who's studied military history knows that's been the case in almost every war. There 's nothing new .

I don't know what happened there, but from my experience I can assume that either there were no minefields at all (this is doubtful), or the minefield maps were not changed for a very long time and the Ukrainians were able to explore the passages or make their own.

Firstly, with a lack of manpower, which led to previously conquered lands being recovered by the Ukrainians and now costing thousands of lives of Russian soldiers to recover them. The reaction to spy drones in the Black Sea was late and the same goes for maritime drones that sank several ships. Now we have a problem in Kursk because they didn't care about the accumulation of soldiers and their military equipment on the border. Were you guys thinking it was for a picknik???

They lacked manpower in 2022 because they had no plans for a war. They only entered as an emergency measure in February 2022 because Zelensky was shelling Donbass more than 1,000 times per day, even 2,000 times, and amassed an invasion army of 60,000 to start the invasion and ethnic cleansing. Russia had fewer soldiers because they did not have an intervention force ready that was the size of the entire Ukrainian army on war footing.
As for the Black Sea that is a huge area and Ukraine constantly gets money, drones and other technology from NATO, along with intel from U.S. satellites. It is inevitable that Ukraine could do SOMETHING there. But they have tried and failed to attack Crimea, because Russia stopped them. Just now during the attack on Kursk, they tried to take islands outside Crimea, and that failed. Russia has done a lot to stop Ukie actions in the Black Sea.
And Russia is demolishing the Ukie army in Donbass, every single day taking more territory. So ... nice try.

The same was said 80 years ago for the Battle of Stalingrad, battle of Kursk, battle of Berlin...
All of those battles in hindsight were disasters for the Germans and they could have either retreated or sued for peace, yet they kept on fighting and attacking. You have to understand that battles aren't usually over in a few days or weeks, especially on such a big front. Only time will tell, but so far this looks like a big raid trying to cause some damage to civilians in the border villages.

      What will they achieve though?
Can they hold the territory without losing as many men as they would do in the Donbass? No, they dont have fortifications and a friendly population to help them.
Will they eventually keep the territory in lets say a peace deal or a ceasefire? No.
Did they inflict significant damage to the Russians compared to their losses, especially compared to fighting from defensive lines in the donbass? Still no.
Did they get a morale boost? Yes and no. The population sure. But the actual men fighting in the Donbass are getting pushed back in various places, claiming they have tons of casualties and few equipment. I would be VERY demoralized if my country was attacking in a foreign country with mostly fresh brigades when i am fighting non stop for UKRAINIAN land and not russian.
The only thing of note that all can agree that ukraine won is PR mostly in the western press. Thats about it. But PR doesnt win wars. The Ukrainians might get an extra aid package or 2 out of this but thats all there is to it. It will just make up some of the equipment losses suffered in the operation.

Try taking a heavily fortified and defended City . Like lets say Bakhmut . Mariinka . Avdeevka .
Try to fight through generally heavily fortified area, lines of defenses manned by battallions of Soldiers with loads of equipment, armoured vehicles, backed up by arty, drones etc .
Then try to get onto an IFV with a few buddies and drive a few miles up a road through undefended territory, in passing "taking" or "occupying" the few surprised villages you drive through .
You will understand the difference then .
On a sidenote, its positively crazy to me how people think covering ground equals "taking territory" . It is NOT the same.
Most of the heavily fortified areas of Ukraine the Russian Federation Forces fought through are occupied . UAF do not contest these areas anymore . Triple line defense has been built . Russian Federation Forces are occupying them, UAF can not do anything to take anything back from them .
The ground UAF covered in Kursk ? None of that is occupied . Most of it has already been taken back, they are stopped in their advance northeast ( basically, they stopped advancing the moment they encountered organized military opposition...) , so now they are moving east, where there is more undefended Land and surprised villages . And they are getting hit back .
Their staging areas are getting rained on, and where line of contact has stabilized, Russian Federation Forces will put the Hammer down to take the territory back . And they will . Just as they took roughly 20% of Ukraine, the most heavily fortified and defended part of it .
