  • Chiang Mai is one of the best places to retire in Southeast Asia. Location independent expats and digital nomads also find it attractive because of its low costs and high quality of life.
Chiang Mai is the 5th largest city in Thailand and offers a high quality of life at a very affordable price. With a population of over 170,000 in the city proper and more than one million in the metropolitan area, it’s the largest city in Northern Thailand and the hub for getting around the north. It’s located at an elevation a little over 1,000 feet above sea level (316 m), and it’s surrounded by mountains and countryside.
In Chiang Mai, many expats report being able to live comfortably for $750 per month, and nomads staying for only a few months have reported living comfortably for $900 per month. Expats living on a tight budget report getting by for as little as $500 per month. My budget for a month of living in the trendiest neighborhood in town was $ 1,280.
In other areas of Chiang Mai, apartments run the gamut starting at around $100 USD, and $450 dollars will get you a nice place with a swimming pool and exercise room. Nearly all apartments offer wifi. One of the benefits of living in Chiang Mai is that your money stretches far and you can maintain a very nice lifestyle with very little money.
Here are some examples of typical costs in Chiang Mai:
A Meal at an Inexpensive Restaurant - $1.24
    Domestic Beer - $2.20
    Cappuccino - $1.60
    A 1-bedroom Apartment in the City Centre - $320
    Utilities, about - $30
    An Internet package - $21.
    A Massage - $7
    Drop in Yoga - $6
And Dropping in at the gym - $2
My Budget for a single month, no lease:
Rent for a month in a nice furnished apartment in the trendiest part of town - $460
This included utilities, internet, wifi, off-road parking, 24-hour security and maid service twice a week.
    Motorbike rental and gas -$100
    Health/Travel Insurance - $100
Eating out every meal Which have been high-quality meals, frequent seafood, daily fresh fruit shakes, coconuts, cappuccinos and other drinks including alcohol - $480
Entertainment included visiting tourist sites, several massages, my first manicure, and pedicure, visiting the gym and attending yoga classes. My total entertainment costs were only - $140
My total for this month - $1,280.
Low cost is just one good reason to choose to live in Chiang Mai. Other great reasons to move here include; the proximity to the mountains with amazing nature and waterfalls, and Chiang Mai is much greener and quieter than Bangkok. It has a cosmopolitan vibe, excellent shopping, and a large expat population as well as many location independent entrepreneurs. Chiang Mai upholds many of Thailand’s traditional values and customs. Cultural opportunities abound like attending a traditional dance, visiting Buddhist temples, and experiencing festivals. Chiang Mai also has very good, affordable healthcare.

@@LivingOverseasTV I am living in Chiang Mai for nearly 5 years and will leave soon direction south because the super bad air. The burning season (if it´s illeagal or not) is from middle of December till May with AQI number of over 400. At many days Chiang Mai is the city in the world with the worst air and at many days you can´t see the mountains.

Thanks Karo. I have friends living for as little as $500 per month. If you try to find a place in the old city or Nimman area during the busy season then you will have to pay a premium. My budget was based on the high season for only one month and eating very well. You could easily live cheaper. Having a roommate can reduce costs a lot too.

$460 is what I paid for a single month without any lease. A similar place with a year lease, in the same neighborhood, would be about $300. If you go 15 minutes outside of the Old City and the Nimman area, you can find a place for around $100. There are several good facebook groups that can get you started. Chiang Mai Digital Nomads facebook group is a good start. I hope to visit Jakarta in the next year.

Great video and channel! Yes, you were there for just a month, so rent would be somewhat proportionally more. A person also knows where the deals are the longer they’re there. Your total is still great, and I’m sure that you ate and drank whatever you wanted, and your place was nice. I like how you showed a longer-term resident in contrast. I lived there a year, and my basic monthly budget was:
      Rent/utilities/WiFi/maid: $146
      Food: $300
      Motorbike rentals: $85
      Gasoline: $15
      Laundry: $15
      Haircut: $2
      Drinking water: $4
      Entertainment (movies, tours): $80
      Wine: $20
Coffee: $150 (next time I will bring a small espresso machine)
      Gym:$25
Visas varied, and the laws changed constantly while I was there, yet added a lot more with a trip to Laos, trips and fees to Thai Immigration, a side trip to Malaysia, border runs, etc.

If you are working a remote job for a USA company, it is very affordable to live in Thailand. You can do a search for digital nomad jobs pr remote jobs and find a lot of information about it. Many you people trying to start their own online business can live on as little as $500 USD per month here in Thailand so they come here to give it a try.

IF YOUTHS COME TO A COUNTRY TO LIVE JUST BECAUSE IT IS CHEAP......THEN THESE VERY YOUTHS HAD LOST THEIR DREAMS ....BEFORE THEY EVEN GET STARTED DREAMING........!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT IS SHEER WASTE OF GREAT TALENTS AND LIVING UNPURPOSEFUL LIVES IN A COUNTRY WHICH THEY WILL FIND THEMSELVES DESTITUTE.....BEFORE LONG !!!!!!!!!!!
WHY ABANDONED THEIR DREAMS.......IN A LAND WHICH WILL NEVER EVER CONNECT ITSELF TO THEM ????????
MY SUGGESTION.......GO BACK HOME......FIND WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSEFUL AND MEANINGFUL LIFE AND CHASE THAT DREAMS WHEN YOU ARE STILL YOUNG !!!!!!!!!!!!

Burning Season is one of the downsides to living in Chiang Mai. I plan on covering this in depth in a future video. There's a lot of information about the burning season online. Some people can't stand it and some don't mind too much. March and April seem to be the worst two months. For me personally, I find that the air pollution of Bangkok bothers me more. With that being said, I love to travel and would recommend enjoying a trip to another part of Southeast Asia during the worst of the burning season.

I'm sitting here in Vancouver wondering what I'm doing here. Forget about covering your cost of living, where I live, $1,280 would allow you to rent a closet full of cockroaches who don't want you in their closet.

It’s too expensive in my opinion.

I would love to explore some cheaper places. Where do you recommend?
