It was my high school graduation present, to attend this specific race. Drove from Virginia to California in 46 hours. (Speed limit on the interstate was 55, but truckers kept us safe. CB radio era) Great time. Still have the ticket stub and my Kodak pictures. Then, we drove back to Virginia and watched it again, one week later, on the Wide World of Sports. The tech inspection was actually done at a mall in Los Angeles. DeCoster, Wolsink, Brad Lackey.....great trip.
I was at this race with my dad. We drove down from WA state As a young motocross racer it was so cool watching an American lead the race for several laps. Marty Smith dominated the 250cc class. RIP dad, Marty and Carlsbad raceways. Coolest thing I ever did with my dad!!
US Grand Prix‘s at Carlsbad were always awesome, featured by ABC wide world of sports. Me and my buddy were CZ freaks. We were rooting for Rex Staten, I actually found that exact bike and restored it, and Rex raced it a few years ago at the CZ Well Championship’s.
WOW! Great job with this and thanks for the memories. This was the first BIG Pro MX race that my Pop surprised me by agreeing to drive myself and my best friend at the time from the city of Burbank, in the San Fernando Valley, down to Carlsbad for this event. Sadly, my good friend, Dave, was tragically killed in an off-road rollover accident two years after this race. My Pop passed away eighteen months ago. But, this day, 6/22/1975 is one of the most memorable days of my adolescences life. Thanks again : )
Wow! You have some really important pieces of the puzzle that is the archive of this great sport! Thanks so much for sharing all of these great videos. Videos of the sports early days are rare, more so the further you go back…. Of course my favorite period is the “works bike” era from about 1976-1986. The bikes were changing so much every year and some of the factory works bikes were art to my eyes.
I remember this era like it was yesterday as I was a weekend warrior racing carlsbad and saddleback every sunday with CMC.....was part of the era prior to moving your shocks up to the era where everyone was moving their shocks up, thanks Willy Bauer and team Maico, after the inaugural 73 USGP. By far the golden era of the sport and glad I was part of it. By the time 1980 came around this era was over as by now it was the changing of the guard as the european legends we worshiped were taking a back seat to american dominance. Sometimes when your wishes/dreams come true is just aint the same anymore 🙁
Im 61 years old and i had one of these heavy bikes , and raced , getting hit by one if you went down was always painful and everyone used a kidney belt 3 laps in a race on these bikes you will feel for a week after !!
I read somewere that rodger decoster hit a tree in a gp in a bad spill and it stoped his heart , now they shocked him back with paddles of life and he raced the next week anyone know if thats even halfway accurate ??
Hey thanks for posting. I'm amazed at what appears to be a huge crowd in attendance. It seems that outdoor motocross was quite popular! I'm not too enamored with this indoor supercross thing. Seems that in supercross, the bikes only need 1 or 2 gears cuz they never really "get going". We can only hope that one day supercross will become illegal and we can get back to real motocross!
Staten was a local boy.. I think he had a works CZ?.. I'm sure someone 'changed things' a bit. Welding on that weird euro chromoly, (recycled crashed planes) lol is a waste of time.

Very cool!
Our family friend worked for WWS as the helicopter filmer and got us free tickets to this race
That was the fastest bike rocket Rex Staten use to tell me about that beast

Thank you very much. I understand about your dad and friend. (Pretty much exactly the same here ... ) Thanks again
@@TheMindChampion RIP. Ditto.
BTW, the music is pretty good ... sometimes I don't care for videos like this to be solely accompanied by music, but you made it work.
Thank you very much what great memories, I used to work it off Yamaha dealer when I was 14 years old in Rochester New York in 1975

Raced in the 250 support class that day pitted next to Brad lackey never forget
I was there. Look at all the people.
Kenny Zahrt would launch going up the Carlsbad freeway uphill jump next to the ped. bridge.
I was there...
I was there 😊
Great video...if u wanna read a unreal event that happened to rex staten how he got there and what happen....
Rex Staten rode a Harry klem built cz400. Cz fired Harry for a dnf saying stock bike would've finished won.
Did you get these from Roger D ?
Hi. Thank you. I filmed these myself, way back in the day. There will be more coming in the next few weeks.
@@TheMindChampion Wow really
Sadly, the only part of that track that is still visible is the starting area. The rest was bulldozed and an industrial park built on it.
If he'd been able to use his Maico forks and a couple other mods he ran at local races, RD wouldn't have caught him
Hi there! We would like to get in touch with you about using some of your footage for a documentary about Pierre Karsmakers. How can we contact you?
Bell bottoms , 🤣🤣🤣
