  • It's the 1980 USGP of Motocross at Carlsbad California - the mecca of motocross at the time. In the ten years since the first USGP at Carlsbad, no American had won the overall 500cc championship. While American motocross riders were becoming more and more competitive with the Europeans throughout the 1970s, only two US riders had even won a moto at the USGP at Carlsbad prior to 1980.
In this great moment of opportunity, enter Marty Moates - a local privateer rider on an LOP-backed production Yamaha YZ465. While most all fans and even the commentators expected Brad Lackey to be the US rider to dethrone the Europeans at Carlsbad, it was Marty Moates who got the hole shot in both motor, and rode like a world-beater to (literally) beat the world on his home turf.
This is perhaps the quintessential underdog story played out on the largest stage of American motocross, with coverage provided by ABC's Wide World of Sports.
