One year later, this works flawlessly. I used the stock 512gb as my external, though. Thank you SO much. This tutorial was easily one of the best I've come across yet.
The sabrent internal 1tb ssd is amazing. I cloned my old 256gb drive right onto it and I was good to go. This external drive is great option for those who don't want to open their deck.
@yoitsmegabe yeah I thought the first ssd I used was bricked because it wouldn't clone. Got a second and it's doing the same thing some I'm wondering if it has to be formatted first.
wow, i'm buying this not because of the product quality but because of this guy saying "USB 3.2 Gen2 by 2" without stuttering and i dare you guys to say that 5 times fast :D
ye ik this is kinda late but I use a 1tb internal, and I use the old ssd connected to an enclosure so it’s not wasted, and then a 500g micro so so I have almost 2 terabytes of storage
The problem I have with all these external SSD and SSD enclosure is that they don't provide a way to charge the Steam Deck while you're playing off the external SSD, because sometimes you lose track of time and forget your Steam Deck battery is running out without a save point near by. You require a hub if you ever want to charge the Steam Deck while playing games off the external SSD. I'm still waiting for someone to create a SSD product that allow us to charge the Steam Deck at the same time.
@@powerhouse884 The one I've found either uses the old SATA SSD, or the one that does uses NVMe, are primarily massive hub or docking stations. What I want are smaller form factor to stick to the back of my Steam Deck while I'm using in my hands. I'm actually now looking for USB-C splitter that offer PD charging and data transfer at the same time. Unfortunately TH-cam don't allow links in the comment sections for obvious reason, but I would love you to link me to those portable hubs with nvme and pd charger you mentions.
Why make an SSD that charges and reads/writes data when that’s literally the same as a USB hub? There are plenty of USB-C hubs half the size of an iPhone, or smaller, that also have PD (Power Delivery). You know what’d be great, that hasn’t been made yet? A Portable Charger + External SSD/HDD; Both of them in the same unit that can charge devices & R/W data through one connection, while also charging up to 4-5 other devices!!! You could just tape it to the back of a Steam Deck & have 2-in-1 functionality! It could function as an SSD/HDD by itself if you’re not charging things. That’d be TIGHT!
Yeah the Wavlink Hub is the best solution to this. I have had instances where we e games don't fully download for whatever reason, but I also charge my deck while playing external.
I did this to connect a 4TB External HDD through the Steam Deck Dock. That way instead of uninstalling games to make space, I just move them to the external HDD. I also have all my Roms and Movies on the external HDD. I'm hoping later this year I can get a 2TB SSD at a decent price. Idk if I'd use this since I do play while it charges pretty often. It would need a USB C splitter and maybe a holder that grips to the back of the deck... most people aren't going to stick velcro to their gaming devices.
This is the reply I've been looking for! I'm going to install a 2TB internal but there are certain games I only like playing when connected to a monitor with mouse and keyboard. Gonna try this out!
I saw on AMZ a device clipped on the the back of the Steam Deck which offers various ports. It could be an option to have everything connected to the USB-C port. It has an HDMI port, an USB-C PD 100W port, 2 USB-A Gen 3 ports and a microSD card port + a kickstand. Is it reliable and durable?? I don't know. It's worth a try if purchased on sale.
I think the problem with using a SSD drive on the deck with a USB-C cord is that the deck has a short battery life and can't charge it will the SSD is mounted
Unfortunately it is 1 usbc to 3. I would prefer to have 1 to 2 but if you really want to just cut it. I did that and used some insulation tape to be sure.
USB hub would fix the issue but then you're just dongling your dongle. i carry the deck around in a nice sling messenger bag with a decent sized battery in it though so would work fine for me. im only just hitting the limits of my microSD card usage lol.
I have formatted my external drive to ext4, my Steamdeck sees it, I have all checked in the removable drives section. But going into Steam, settings, then in Downloads and clicking the Steam Library folders and clicking the plus icon, I get a long list of random folders. I dont get the option to add my 2TB Seagate at all. Any help or ideas?

Hello, thanks and congrats for the review. I have a question, did you do some benchmarks test to the external SSD? Do you have data about write and read speeds using the external SSD? Many thanks again
Auto mount in Gaming Mode still not fix , have to still go to Desktop Mode and back for my SSD to show up in Gaming Mode . Auto Mountain was working in Gaming Mode when 3.4 previews was release but after 3.4 was released as stable it stop working and haven't been fixed since. Maybe valve not doing it any more for some reason .
You can look into one of our steam deck gaming hubs or docking stations, they are great if you are looking to not only connect up your ssd, but gives you extra ports. Search for DS-SD6P, DS-SDNV or HB-STDK on Amazon.
Then all the things are done, remove the external hard disk directly, next time you connect the hard disk and store the hard disk status in game mode, will it still appear?
Is it away to have that in the back with double sided tapped and a usb split connection so i can charge it without having to unplug the external harddrive?
For some reason, my auto mount is not working at all I have to redo everything from the very first step. I don’t understand. I did exactly what you said which has helped a lot and it works and I’m able to download stuff onto it but when I and the screen goes to sleep, it disconnects and then I have to do it all over again even though I click the checkmarks on those boxes to auto mount when logged in, it still makes me have to go to the desktop mode and enter in my password, and then going to steam downloads and add it on again and then when I’m going to gaming mode, it will disappear do it again I do have the sabrent but it’s a 2 TB m.2 SSD inside of the sabrent mount. I would have to say this is the most convenient method was probably happening is I try to do the other method where I have to go in the consul and do all that stuff because like I said it wasn’t automatically logging I was like what do I have to do to find it again, but I clicked on another video, which was a lot more complicated than it did not help. So I had to re-watch this video to do it again. But thanks for the video
"There might be a little bug with Steam OS at the moment, but by the time you're watching it's probably solved". 6 months later... No, the auto mount in Gaming mode, is still broken, sadly.
This seems like a great idea. Only problem is, the Steam Deck only has 1 USB port, so how can I play and charge the deck at the same time when using this drive? Will it work with a USB type C splitter?
For those who dont know they updated the steam deck so now external ssds or sd cards now auto mount

still a better idea to upgrade to a 2TB internal SSD makes life alot easier. Im using the 2230 WD SN740 and its been great
