Is there also magic in her trying to cancel Joe Rogan's ideas?
When that happened with the Vietnam War we spoke out in the streets.
I always liked Joni's music but she's wrapped up in fear now.

No words can describe the gift that this is. I am 65 now, don't think I have heard this in 30 years, it was all I ever listened to 20 years before that and this has bent time and brought it all back - but in a way that just rounds everything out and leaves only the sublime feelings of relish and soaring joy. Impossible to even imagine at age 15, then age 35, that there would be a channel opened shooting me straight back to then, that brings James back to Joni to share with all who loved each and both of them, to listen again, and revel again, with the sagacity of age. It makes me feel complete. Thank you with all my heart.

Kami Maltz gives a wonderful rendition of this song in dulcimer and voice. Usually I don't like covers but its wonderful to know that young people are still interested in Joni

      Same for me, Andrea.
But hearing this also feels like a brand new experience - maybe that’s the miracle of Joni’s music.
Knowing James’s history with Joni, the music of our youth, and his long personal and artistic journey since makes me smile and wonder with awe. Grateful how he’s been a constant presence in my life.
The renewed interest in Joni’s music is exciting - and hearing artists like Brandi Carlisle, Billie Eilish and others taking up her songs gives me hope for the future of music and humankind.

The one I’ve always really wanted to see is James’ work on Joni’s California. JT is iconic on that with his syncopated bassline, and hammer-on pull-off riffs. Plus the instrumentation leaves enough space to clearly separate his part.

...I'm sure she watched this and thought, "well that's beyond my pay-grade!"....She's a wonderful vocalist; but her fingerstyle guitar chops are elementary (There are quite a few videos, here on TH-cam, of her playing fingerstyle...). This is even more rococo than James has demonstrated at his most elaborate on his own songs! It's amazing how sympathetic his guitar playing is to the single notes and dynamics of a very simple dulcimer part by Joni...all of the minute rhythm changes are there and he alternates chords w/ bass notes and some counterpoint lines. James has always demonstrated a very original and singular voice as a guitar player. I'm going to be studying this one...incredible stuff....

Mr James Taylor. I don't know if you read comments, I hope you do. I was born in 1957. When I was in 8th grade, my english teacher played your album "Sweet Baby James". Your music spoke to my heart. I've been a fan since. I've seen you 5 times live. The first was after "JT" came out at Nassau Colliseum on Long Island. The Section was touring with you, phenominal musicians. I saw you at Jones Beach as well. I sang with bands and acoustic gigs in my 20s and 30s. I play piano too, but not publically. When I was pregnant with my first child, I would rock in a chair singing "Sweet Baby James". I sang it to him until he said he didn't want me to anymore. I sang it to his 2 younger siblings. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the songs you wrote and sing. 💜

JT, Thank you for your guitar part now and then. Speaking to Uncut magazine in a 2018 interview, James Taylor denied the song was written about him. He said: "I don't think that song was written about me. Joni already had that song when we met. I did back her up on guitar when she recorded it. I thought it was a beautiful song... I wished it was about me!"

I never knew this! How very kewl! What an amazing sound coming out of stringed instruments, and that album "Blue," I first discovered my first year college, in 1983, and I listened to it over and over, and I still have every word memorized. Joni Mitchell was so creative and so deeply poetic, and her voice is amazing, such range and clarity. There is no one, in my most humble opinion, that comes close to her deeply rich genius. Not then, not now. And I am so happy she had a friend like you, who brave enough, and man enough, to, instead of a "you threaten me," response, which I'm sure others must have felt that, in awe of her talent, you decided to have a positive, and encouraging response, and that is why you da man man, Mr. Taylor. And you are also supremely talented, and your genius, is still marching on, and so alive as we speak! "Never DIe Young!" God bless you all and thank you for the outstanding work you do, and have done!

This is such a gorgeous guitar part, now as it was then. The passage of 50 years (!!!) has not been kind to many arrangement and production styles in popular music, but this is as timeless and perfect now as it was the day it was recorded.
It's incredibly generous of James to re-record the original part, basically note for note, to pass it on to someone else as a kindness. I love everything about this. It's a great reflection on James's giving spirit as a musician-and a reminder that he's quietly remained one of the best guitarists of the last century, with no ego and not much fanfare (except for the "Fanfare" track on One Man Dog).
I don't imagine James has the time to read his own comment threads, but of course I would say thank you for posting this incredible reconstruction of your part: I'm sure there are a lot of guitarists watching with special interest.
For anyone else who's trying to learn a bit of this sublime fingerstyle, I recorded my best attempt at James's classic "Something In The Way She Moves" (key of A, capo 3, though I play it at capo 4 for a little extra sparkle) and I'm happy to share it below, in thanks and tribute to the guitarist who's probably had the biggest influence on my acoustic sound for more than 25 years. Thank you, James, for sharing your gift with us all.
