The part that really puts all the music in Hades a giant step up, is how they handle the transitions. Every track has that first, softer version, and then that heavy version. When you're just walking around, reading dialogue, etc, it's the softer track. Then when combat starts, the music seamlessly transitions into the heavy version of the track. This one in particular is the music for the first boss fight. So it starts out with you trying to talk your way out of the fight, and then when it comes down to fighting time, the music you've been listening to just says "want to hear this music... turned up to 11?".
And in that same vein, God of the Dead, the final boss music, has a phase 2 that turns it up to 11 as well - but then they added a phase 3 superboss and though "Idk, 12 I guess?" - that being The Unseen Ones
Darren Korb likes to make mashed-up genre names for each of the games he's worked on: Bastion as "Acoustic Frontier Trip-hop" Transistor as "Electronic Old-World Post-Rock" He's described Pyre as Bardic Acoustic Rock And Hades as "Mediterranean-Prog Rock-Halloween" As such I'd like to recommend Paper Boats from Transistor for a look at his work from a different genre!
I love how everyone recommends a different Transistor song. They're so freaking good. Even though it doesn't have lyrics, I think "Old Friends" may be one of my favorite pieces of music...ever?
I think your face at about 5:30 as the song kicks into high gear hands down one of the best reactions I've seen on youtube in general. Also, if you want an excuse to do more Hades, consider this the assist. Gonna recommend "The King and The Bull", "Good Riddance", and "Final Expense (Payback Mix)"
darren korb is a goddam genius and i am glad he's been doing music for supergiant since bastion this isnt even like a request, just go look up his work from pyre and transistor when you have some free time, the vocal tracks especially are amazing
The beauty of this OST is how simple it is as far as musical fundamentals. It's the execution and creativity in how they do it that makes it so unique and hard to match. I do hope he ended up playing Hades, if only for reliving 5:19- "...hello, Meg."
For some context of the track, the game switches which section its in dynamically based on the intensity of your play. If you're just exploring or fighting in low difficulty encounters you'll get the calmer more ambient sections, another one for a regular combat, and a different one for mini-bosses and bosses. A lot of the songs on the hades soundtrack do that or are dynamic in some other way. If you ever listen to "The God of Dead" on this channel, which is the precursor to The Unseen Ones, you'll notice that there are different 'sections' of intensity that in-game correspond to different phases of the fight. ("The God of Dead" is in itself a more intense version of the main title theme "No Escape"). Highly encourage watching a hades clear to get a feel for how the music matches up with the gameplay. In particular, the odd jolting rhythmic patterns in "The God of Dead" fit very nicely with the actual rhythym of the gameplay during that fight.
I think the instrument in the beginning is a “oud” which is an Arabic lute. It is very popular here in the Middle East, and one of my favorite instruments.
The people behind Hades, Supergiant, are abdolute masters at what they do. Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and now Hades. Every single one os unique with distinct musical styles ranging from operatic electronic, to splitting lyrical versions of bluegrass tracks then bringing them together for a final song, to the blend of metal in Hades. Beautiful art, stories, characters, acting, and gameplay styles. I genuinely don't believe they've made a bad game. All while ensuring their employees never experience crunch and get substantial time off. Seriously, some talented stuff at Supergiant.
Pyre is especially amazing, because they recorded like 14 different versions of the final match track featuring leitmotifs from the other teams. They put so much thought and love into the lore of the world that it's very easy to forget that it's not some real mythology in the way Hades is.
Imagine this. I felt like you felt in this video, in literally every single piece in this ost.. its just how crazy good it is. And it also mirrors how good the game is on all levels. Its such a great package that the enjoyment that comes from the music, only skyrockets more when you blend it with the gameplay loop. Pure madness. Possibly the best metal album ever made for a game in our era.
Basically tracks for bosses (apart from Hades fight) have two parts: one part when you talk with your enemy, and when you're done, the second part kicks in saying it's the time when you get trashed
I love Darren's music so much and it makes me so happy that you're enjoying the hell out of it too! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the beginning of Supergiant's journey with 4 songs: Build That Wall; Mother, I'm Here; Setting Sail, Coming Home; and The Mancer's Dilemma.
you definitely need to play Hades when you find the time to spare, I think you'd really, really dig it on a number of levels (beyond the obviously awesome soundtrack). great vid as always man
The first sound reminds me of "oud" instrument which very popular here in middle east/Arabic music. I just discovered your channel and I've been binge watching you react to my fav games soundtracks : Bloodborne, Hades, silent hill, undertale, zelda, FF !! Thank you for the awesome content : D
Great reaction, and glad you enjoyed the song so much! It was great hearing your analysis of all the nuanced musical details as well. Darren Korb never, ever misses. Hope you had a nice holiday season and got a chance to dive into Hades; it's an amazing game. Cheers!
@@JessesAuditorium Yes, the composer said that in one of his videos. He also shows to play some songs, such as Good Riddance on a plain guitar, shown on the Supergiant Games TH-cam channel.
not for nothing Hades is one if not the best "non AAA" rated game on steam. BTW: "god of the dead" and "The king and the bull" are also pretty damn good.
I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned it in comments already, but one of the best things (besides, yknow, everything else) that Darren Korb, Ashley Barrett, and Supergiant do with the music in their games is that most songs either have multiple versions (such as Red humming in Transistor) or gradual changes as the song progresses (like in this track), so that the music can vary in intensity with what the player is doing in game. In Hades, the music varies in intensity depending on how many enemies, what phase of a fight, or the scale of the enemy you are up against, and this lends to an incredible player experience where you are rewarded for content progression just through the music you get to hear PLUS any loot or story beats. I think one of the only tracks from the game that beat Scourge of the Furies for me would be God of the Dead... though, if you are planning on playing the game, I may recommend experiencing the song through the game itself rather than listening to it on its own. There's just something about how the music lands WITH the combat in the game and that intensity variation I mentioned earlier that can't be experienced by listening alone (even though I listen to it on repeat afterwards lol)
When playing the game, you don't really get the time to appreciate the OST as much as when you just sit down and listen to it like this. It really is a great piece of music. Fitting to follow one of the best characters in the game.
I found your channel today and have been binging your reactions. I see this is the last Hades you've reacted to and I hope you've had a chance to play the game since this.
The Supergiant crew make music games, and in Transistors case, a game about a musician. Go play Hades man, it won game of the year all over for a reason, and the music, and the way the music is tied in to the game, is phenomenal.
Scourge of the Furies is a litteral masterpiece of brutality and savageness, this one is perfect for the characters it depicts. Savage, untamed, and with absolutly no mercy for you ! That's everything about those furies :) And its in my opinion the best theme of the entire game for that matter. If you don't like this theme, you probably have big problems.
If you want more Darren Korb, Strange Voyage and Knights of the Sea from Pyre are excellent. Knights of the Sea is his take on a pirate shanty type song and it's so good, and Strange Voyage just makes me happy.
If you get the opportunity you really should play Hades as it's easily one of the best games to come out in the last decade: great visuals, great music, and easy to understand gameplay that can scale to your level of intensity. Even more impressive that it's from a small developer!
Seen it in the comment section already, but I reiterate the sentiment that Risk of Rain 2s soundtrack is amazing and The Rain Formerly Known As Purple is phenomenal, the composer even has an hour long analysis of how each song came to be which is really interesting to listen to even as someone who is completely clueless
You have to check his other games OST. Pyre, Transistor and Bastion all have very good music. I'd recommend Pyre-Trash Pack for some good guitar riffs and Bastion-Spike on a rail.
One suggestion I'd like to make is literally anything from the soundtrack of the original Nier, which was the precursor to the much more well known Nier: Automata. My personal favorites are "Song of the Ancients" (either the Devola or Popola version, though the duet version is amazing, and only available as the conclusion of a series of fetch quests across the game world.), "Shadowlord's Castle - Roar", or "Yonah" (again, any version). It was a game made by noted industry crazy-man Yoko Taro, and he not only got an entire philharmonic orchestra to play it, but had an entire fake language made up so the songs had lyrics. It's honestly an amazing experience.
