Al, your T-shirt said it all. Superhero that’s what you are. A little bit of tinkerage, a tap with the rejuvenation tool and a dash of sparkage and it comes to life. As if it was ever in doubt. Gotta love a man with a wealth of knowledge, doing what he does best. Can’t get enough of your channel.
Great video again, I'm going to use this same procedure to start my reliant Robin 1974 mk1 van that hasn't started for 32 year, thanks for the handy tips 👍👍
Yay another Reliant owner ftw. I would do the oil and waters first, then some oil mixed with some Redex down the plug holes, rocker cover off and give the valves a tap to free 'em up and then give it some jungle juice and a good strong battery hoping the ballast resistor hasn't gone for an early shower. Dizzy wise, prob need a bit o' a cleanup new points and rotor arm (I use Distributor Doctor rotors and did use his condensors before going Accuspark electronic) Carb prob need a refresh kit from SU's over in Salisbury, yep still going strong is SU, I found on ebay a NOS dusty on the shelf "yellow top" carb paid £25 and it was minty fresh, my mechanic back then offered me £250 for it and I was "nah mate", even had its original tags and SU stamped gaskets.
I am so impressed with the idea of the oil pressure tester tool. So obvious when you think about it, but I've never seen that trick. Also a good example of a rejuvenation tool 😂😅
Your videos are getting better by the week proper old school , and teaching people how it's done. My friend in Poole was in to Volkswagens and had a split screen camper and a 1303s beetle around 1981. He kept on to us to get a camper and we bought a 74 Westphalia it turned out to be a pain in the ass the worst thing i bought it broke down twice the 1st week took it back to the garage he said he would fix it. Got it back and on the way home it died again he towed us back and i got a call a week later from a chap who he rented the garage from to say he had done a runner owing money. Luckily Trent's had a van in with a good engine we fitted it and i put it through the auction glad to get rid of it.
That little flat 4 sighed back into life 🙂and it sounds good 🙂 AL you need to love our comments more often. then subscribers will go through the roof 🙂
Excellent video Al, I’m convinced you could get a bucket of rusty nuts and bolts to fire into life. So entertaining to watch as always. Thank you 👍👍👍👍👍
Love the old Air cooled flat 4 we had a 1600 in a 73 type 2 bus and the 1300 in a 70 beetle. We had one on the kitchen table over winter while it was rebuilt too 😂
I always have this mental image of out of shot your mate is stood there with a one man band setup giving it large doing the background music including the intermittent "woo-ooo's" :P Sorry couldn't resist hehehehehe
Hi fella, looking forward to popping in again 😀 👍 great video teaching the young guns that actually want to work! Rare i know 😂 liked and shared tohelp out
You got to love the man AL He’s seems to get them started in the end always love your videos Al mate and if I ever get stuck with one my motors I love how you go in depth on how to strip and rebuild engines AL keep up the good work mate too regards jay 😊. Always looking forward to your next videos mate 😊👍😉
If there's a snail cam pivot bolt on the neck of the solenoid bracket housing, try turning that a quarter turn either way. It can move out of adjustment and just need to get in the right position to fire the starter pinion a bit further out on activation.
I wish 1974 was only 38 years ago,i would only be 41 then lol.i think you mean 48 years.another great upload tho, allways looks odd when a engine is running with no car around it lol.
Great content. Nice to see an Air-cooled motor being played with. Great find, a low mileage 1500, not often you find that! It looks to be the original 67 distributor and carb, if the carb is iffy get it rebuilt, dont buy the new aftermarket ones as they are utter junk, same with the distributor. And old Vdubs, they always run! And you'll find most the aftermarket parts really are crap now, so if you can refurbish OE VW bits it definitely pays to do it.
My old man always reckoned the VW Bug was quite possibly the worst motor he had ever owned and he was a man who had had some truly dreadful cars 😅, I've got an irrational hatred of VW products to this day !
Al - said it before, but it has to be said again, absolutely love what you do, and how you do / deliver it - been looking for a contact for you online, as I have a similar ‘please resurrect’ challenge for you, but can’t find you - how can I get in touch? Keep ‘em comin’! JCHK
I’ve got about 5 fella but it’s big heavy and a nightmare to send without the cost of a pallet , your more than welcome to collect it £100 gets you a gooden 👍
If that isn't leaking oil you must have do something wrong😂 every air cooler flat 4 I have ever fitted has leaked 4 different engine builders and still never seen a dry lump

Wow that's impressive. Al the King of Reviving dead engine's has worked his magic again.😊👍👍👑👑

@@dodgydruid thankyou for the tips, will be cracking on with it next month, shouldnt take much it's all original... Fingers crossed 🤞😁
Never was a «superhero» t-shirt worn with more justification 😁👍🏼
Those lumps so so reliable and being laid up that long ran very well even valve wasnt clattering lol

Not in to VW Beetles but I’ll still enjoy watching it being restored

I think you scared it into running when you approached the carb with a sledge hammer Luv it

Great video al brilliant engines run for every 👍
Love your videos. Your way with words always amuses me.
Another great video has always al 👍
gota say that silly grin as it started said it all , top job Big Al , even the workshops looking a bit clearer now too
A sweet little 1500 beetle engine.
I had a couple of air cooled Beetles back in the day, they were both very good cars.
Turns out you can use the “British Leyland toolkit” (aka a big hammer) on Volkswagens too!
I love the madness Al...But it works....At least your normal flat battery is less likely to expand from roaming sparkles...
Great work mate you make me chuckle :)
I'm glad to see you keep the garage floor paint safely in the tin. I am also impressed with your 'old man kneeler'! a necessary piece of equipement
Did have a mad floor painting spree last year looked great for about a month !! Might get all excited and use the 150 ltrs I’ve got kicking around 👍

Another excellant vid Al. If you got one kicking about, an old petrol lawnmowers have nice little fuel tanks for jobs like this.
Keep em coming 👍👍
That's exactly what I use for similar projects, simple gravity fed fuel supply.
XPP 767 , in pale blue was my dads 1st car , 1300 beetle , well done Al , magic as usual
Seeing as it's close to my birthyear, if it hasn't run since 1974 that would be 49 years or so.
Was just thinking the same .
Al's thinking it's still the 2010s. Cant blame him, I do it too 😂

Hell of a go kart al😂😂😂😂
I wish I had given you my 2012 astra diesel to try and fix, I spent over 2 grand and still ended up scraping it. 😢

You might want to connect the vacuum pipe from the carb to the distributor.
You can see it arcing on the coil
Fair play mate 👍
Where can I get a rejuvenation tool from I really need one it fixes almost everything😂 love the vids keep them coming😊
you crack me up, if you were rich they would call you eccentric, but obviously you are as mad as me! i would gladly take you for a beer. maybe two

Is it just me or does the VW1500 air-cooled engine sound much better than the 1300?❓
Air cooled but needs to be moving to help cool
Self cooling they even made Vw generators perfectly able to cool it’s self sat still

You want to be careful, being 1960's and off the the road so long it won't have the hardened valves to take unleaded.
So Jesus had a bicycle and hosana had a hi ace... i guess the rest of them walked 🤣👍🇮🇪
