Hey I just wanted to say how your comment about the usefulness about humanites courses and how they foster growth as a person was very powerful to me. It completely flipped my perspective of these kinds of courses. The idea that theses courses are somehow less valuable because they don't cleary benefit your career is everywhere. As you said, this shows a misunderstanding of what education is about. The point of learning is to improve yourself at a certain area. Computer Scientists not only develop proficiency in programming but also general logic and reasoning. In the same way, philosophers learn how to generate unique ideas about the world around them and the more abstract skill of understanding the human nature and the world around them. Learning something will always benefit you in some way or another. We are all human after all. Not mindless robots learning how to make more money. Your words were very insightful, thank you.
Hey thanks so much for this comment - I'm so happy this section was relatable for some and was helpful. I'm in CS aiming to solve world problems and not just mindlessly carry out tasks employers make you do - I find that trying to be thoughtful is quite anti culture, but so important. Thanks so much for the comment
I’m currently in Grade 11 and deciding on where to go for university. I have great interest in UWaterloo but I am a social butterfly with many ideas. I also am not set in wanting to only do engineering… I think that this video helped a lot. Now I can look into other universities that will accept my creativity and make me “lose my mind” haha. Thank you!
hey! I messaged you on instagram with questions, but was wondering if you could make a video on your highschool avg and ec's you did to get into waterloo. Currently a grade 11 student and I am intested to go there!
This really reminds me of some top high schools in China (like the one I was in). Strong emphasis on academic rigor, which may overshadow other aspects of learning. Is that true?
i am a new sophomore in high school in america , i don’t want to go to college here as i hate it , and if i do it’s going to be popular schools near me and the areas are problematic. i literally go to school next to ASU 😐 (popular for the wrong reasons) so i really want to go to waterloo , should i do it? i will most likely study foreign language or film
Hi Serena, first of all congrats on completing year 1. I got into Waterloo CS. Just a quick question, What elective did u choose in ur first semester? Which one would u recommend me (a CS student)? (Kindly suggest an easy-bird) See ya this fall! :)
Hi thanks! I was in CS/BBA for first year and didn't have any elective slots haha, had to do the BBA required courses. My friends in CS did SPCOM courses and also science electives to fulfill breadth and depth requirements. You can take a look at the checklist here cs.uwaterloo.ca/checklists#breadthdepth
Hi Serene, I found this video very informative. I just have a question… i am more into innovative things (doing innovations ) thinking creatively…..and i am very business oriented as well…. I am more into entrepreneurship kind of thing… I am studying at Lakehead University (1st year)… and was planning to transfer my credits to U of Waterloo or UBC … The reason I thought to do this is because I thought i could start a startup with friends out there who have the same interests… so should I continue to come to U of Waterloo or UBC … or study in the same university and focus on developing it by my own? What i think is , students in élite universities don’t get much time to focus on their startup ideas, bcz they already have soo much to do in classes… But however, many startups come from those universities. Please give ur feedback..
Hey, sorry for the late reply! My personal take is, depending on what kind of startup you want to do, you can personalize your education based on it. Y Combinator turns out to accept a significant amount of Waterloo students/grads probably because the stem curriculum here is good. You can consider that if you want to build a solid technical foundation for building a tech startup. I'm not sure about UBC or Lakehead but they're probably more diverse. Ultimately, what do you want to start, what do you need in order to do it, then go get that.
I heavily considered that combo and think it might be good, but obviously I haven't done it myself. However if I were to do that my concern would be, "how can I do well in either field if I', only doing 2-2.5 years each?" For example, my friend from western bmos + AEO are already recruiting for finance starting from year one and has 2 internships before entering Ivey, so I'd be worried about splitting my attention and not focusing enough on either one.
Im currently in 12th standard cbse in India and im looking forward to do cs in waterloo or Conestoga, but im confused about the admission requirements and the fees , could you please help me with that?
hey! I got into cfm and cs/bba (uw side) but have trouble deciding where to go. (I wanted to go into cs but unfortunately got deferred.) Is dropping bba and going into cs easy? I heard they started making it harder this year
Hey yeah it’s super easy to drop from cs bba (uw side) to cs with coop. There’s basically no condition and you just fill a 1 page form. I heard cfm also allows easy drop but I can’t be sure
@@serenaadoesuni Did you drop BBA after a couple of weeks? I’m curious to know whether the advisors care how soon you transfer to CS after your first day
You're iconic and hilarious. This video was published at the perfect time for me because I'm currently deciding between Waterloo and uof T. Also, Is it just me or are the links cut off? Being a woman in engineering, i'd love to read your reddit post about being a girl at Waterloo!
hahaha thanks! Oh yeah maybe the links don't work because my account isn't verified... hm will look into that. Hope you made a good decision between u of t and uw! Here's the reddit link! www.reddit.com/r/uwaterloo/comments/11ggqi3/dont_like_being_a_girl_here/
I’ve thought about it. I think I would’ve liked a medium between the western and Waterloo environment (literally at the end of two spectrums cuz western is so party school). But I do like that I’m focusing on CS in terms of education.

Wowww thanks for the honest advice!!!
as a 4th year cs student this is rly accurate haha
Does waterloo provide course based program for Master in computer science?
Master program which does not require research paper before applying to program.
What about the Aviation department, is it a good idea to study Aviation at UoW..

Hey,
I’m looking to transfer from USA. I have a 4.0 gpa do you think I stand a chance?
Hey yes I think you have a very good chance! My transfer friends had basically a perfect GPA when they transffered in
Very good vid, but tf was that section about boys 🤣

Thoughts on Western CS + Ivey?

Enjoyed the editing, as a 2B mech I strongly agree with a lot of the points and the conclusion haha.
Hahahaa yeah it's not 100% perfect and imo there are people who would do better not going lol

I know people who did, but I dropped it after a semester. I don't think there's any issue with advisors but you can probably email them to confirm!
so do you like boys or girls?
hmm
She loves kamala

You should go for it!
do you think you shoulda accepted another program like ivey + se?
I’ve thought about it. I think I would’ve liked a medium between the western and Waterloo environment (literally at the end of two spectrums cuz western is so party school). But I do like that I’m focusing on CS in terms of education.
I love how she cuts herself off most of the time
