STEAM POWERED MACHINE SHOP 50 Boiler certification, saving a hit & miss cylinder

  • Video number 50 from my shop set up as a steam powered small job machine shop of 1925. These clips feature a "sleeve job" to salvage a cylinder from an early 1900 gasoline 6HP engine. The boring mill is run by electric power, but I thought you might be interested in seeing how the job was done. Any discussion, questions, or comments on steam power, line shaft systems, and old school machine work are always welcome here. You can follow shop news on my G+ page. Thanks for your subscriptions, likes and comments....Dave

Dave: I HAVE WATCHED ALL YOUR VIDEOS, THAT MEANS EVERY ONE OF THEM THREE TIMES, AND AM NOW CONTEMPLATING STARTING OVER FOR A FOURTH WHILE I EAGERLY AWAIT VIDEO NUMBER 51!
There is no one else on TH-cam that I have watched their videos twice, not Adam, the Keith's, Steve, Brian's, Tublacain or John's. Dave your videos are so unique, and a treasure. Please never doubt for a minute how much what you've done is loved and treasured. I've never met you but consider you a friend whom I've spent many an evening next to the stove with a hot cup in hand listening to you and not only enjoying but learning. Thank you so much for all the hard work and effort you've put forth over the past years and I await your return from winter break. You're distant friend from Washington State, Scott Pecora.

@@davidrichards5594 thank you, I'm starting to realize the potential merits of being a snowbird! In Vancouver here, it's not really much snow, but the constant incessant rain. One year I remember we had 78 straight days of rain! Yet 250 miles to the south in Klamath Falls Oregon, they average over 300 days a year of sunshine! I'm seriously looking into Eastern Oregon or Southwestern Idaho when I retire.

Sleeving that engine sure brought back some memories from my childhood. When we would re-sleeve a tractor engine, we put the sleeves in my grandpa's chest type freezer. He owned the only freezer in our part of the country at that time. We left them in overnight, wrapped them in blankets and ran to the shop and dropped them right in with little effort.

My wife and I rode up to Bald Knob in May, 1972 for our first anniversary and vacation after taking a trip on the Delta Queen out of Cincinnati. Our train of 10 cars was pushed by three Shays because the front 3 cars had Boy Scouts who were going to camp on Bald Knob. The shop at the time was the original one for the railroad and had overhead shafting and still had new Shay parts in inventory. It burned about a week or two after we visited. The track grade just before the summit of Bald Knob is 11%. I really like your channel.

Dave, you are the ONLY consistent steam driven shop video producer. Whatever you do, don't stop producing videos of your shop and the work you do. You show indicators and methods that are seldom if ever seen by anyone- in actual use. You can't find this type of content anywhere but here, at least as far as I know, on a fairly consistent basis. Just like this video concerning the boiler inspections and certification, no one does anything like that, I don't know if it is even mentioned. Obviously you had folks asking questions about it. When you can make videos, make 'em! When you are snowed and need to get a hot job to a customer, that's good business so we may not get a video every month, that's just the nature of the business. Please keep making the videos as you can.
And about your machine related vacation, trip, bucked list videos, ABSOLUTELY! Never dull and always interesting.
Now if anyone else is producing any steam driven line shaft shop videos like this, I'm sure we'd like to know who it is, but even so it wouldn't detract from watching your shop work.
Right now I'm seeing 4,285 views and 1K thumbs up, probably because it's not possible to give two thumbs up per viewer. 22K subscribed, you're doing something right and with good content! If you enjoy sharing your shop and steam driven machining, we're watching!

If I could only think forward as much as the guys who saved this machine. Dammit, we had a power station here in Central Washington, that fed power to Wenatchee, during the teens and 20's, that powered the area. I walked inside the power plant many times, and if it could have been saved with my desire to fight the battle of public exposure in our local paper. All the gauges, and dynamos and everything were there up till the late 80's dammit. I kick myself every day for not fighting to preserve it as a relic of change from no power to electrification, now no more. shoot. please dave, this is begging, please keep up the good work of videoing this work. It is priceless. and good.

Enjoyed the look at the Cass Scenic from another perspective. I still enjoy one particular set of videos on that place. They are a sure way to get an energetic 4 year old nephew (and any other 3-6 year old boy within earshot) to sit still and quiet for 15 minutes. The first blast of that steam whistle, all goes quiet and they are drawn to the source like metal chips to a magnet.

Every time i see a video from you i am thrilled. I have been watching your videos from the very first one on to 50. So happy i discovered you.
I commend so highly what you are doing here giving a living example of something that is such a valuable history to our legacy of industrious creativity and workmanship.
There is something intangibly beautiful about the old machines, something seemingly more organic than what we have today even though i work in that field as well.
And i always marvel at the real precision and accuracy achieved with equipment of the era.
You also have a great flair for a story and direct approach to describing what you are doing that is no nonsense that i really appreciate and i bet others do to.
The love of what you do come's through not to mention great cinematographer as well.
lining up shots to show how the systems work and seeing the steam engine churn in the background has always been satisfying..
OK i'm a gear head techy nut but its all poetry to me, I hope you keep up the good work for many years to come.
Thank you for showing us a slice of America we might not otherwise know exists and that for many of us we are nostalgic for and grateful.

Nice to see those old Shay's restored.
Where I live, back in the days of steam, the shay was a pretty popular loci for logging.
One of the old shops that I used to work in was an old locomotive shop from the days of steam. It was a cool old shop but they tore it down years ago.
We were not allowed to work in it during periods of high winds and heavy snow due to the age and condition of the structure.
But it was still pretty cool.
There was still a line shaft with a few pulleys up in the ceiling in the old machine shop.
The handrail going up to the lunch room was polished smooth from years and years of mechanics running their hands along it going up and down the stairs
When they tore the shop down they sold the timbers out of it.
Can you imagine what they looked like. Big 12X12 old growth douglas fir timbers smoke cured for god knows how many years.
Unfortunately, there are none of the old loci's still working, lots are out as monuments to our logging heritage, in a nice little park when you come into town, but not working. Shame really.

Brian Dick : West Virginia probably hosted the most Shay of any state. The C&O had twenty of them in operation to included there big boy the Class Ds, 100+Ton-4 truck with 17" bore and 18" stroke locomotives. WM, that took over the Greenbrier, had five, Class Cs, and B&O operated three plus the five from WM after there merger. They never operated on the main lines but was used to haul both coal and lumber to the main lines because those speed demons couldn't handle the grades and curves.

That's sad to me..I was living and working in a 100 year old warehouse machine shop building for the last 14 years. Got baught out from under me by a new owner to build condoes.
It got tore down and now is an empty lot.. It pains me that people have such little regard for heritage and the past beauty all for just money. Our place had 50 foot long beams in it,, I always marvled at the size of the trees it must have come from. These things are irreplaceable and yet discarded without a care.
That burned down saw mill in Dave's video made me sad. Although the rusty line shaft wheels I coveted.

Enjoyed the hit-and-miss engine restoration. You probably made the sleeve to piston fit better than original. I can see where most of that job was set up on the horizontal boring machine. Thanks so much for the time you put into video presentation of the work.

I knew where you were as soon as I seen the train, I’m from WV and have ridden to the top a few times, my great grandfather was a logger up in Pocahontas co, heard the story a hundred times from grandpa, his dad would be gone for months at a time, when he got home he’d yell in the house for great grandma to bring him hot water outside. Supposedly he’d burn his clothes and take a bath before coming in because the bedbugs were so bad at the cass camp. Heard they put all four legs of their beds in buckets of oil to try and keep the bugs from getting into the bed!

Great video. I always look forward to them. I like your shop. Reminds me of a long gone old machine shop in my town when I was a kid. I recently acquired a bunch of Greenfield taps and die sets from that shop. Ranging from 1/8 to 1 1/4 sizes . You inspired me to hunt down old tools and machines. I’m having decent luck finding things. Thanks .

Well, there you have it Dave: Everybody loves your videos. ( including me ) Also, I don't think anybody here will care that the G&L isn't steam-driven. Actually, the motor looks like it's probably an antique so it fits in anyway ...
So, yes, we love your content, and the way you present it. I like to see how things would have been done "back in the day". One thing that always strikes me is how quiet things are in your shop. At least on video it's mainly the "click-click-click" of the belts on the pulleys, which I find rather soothing. Watching the line shaft system is like being inside a big mechanical clock, watching its inner workings.
Show us what footage you've got; we'll love it !
    Cheers, Jeff

A big thank you for all your videos and a Evan bigger one for any ones you produce keep up the good work .
I started work in a iron works as an apprentice sparks ( 5 years ) they had 6 blast furnaces all dc powered haulage with slate backed open swithes and contractors no h&e in sight a lot of the machine in production and maintenance.depts were flat belt drive ,horizontal boreing mill were 18 foot beds (used during WW2 for boring gun barrels up to 18 inch dia later when I was there they were still in use for boring moulds for the cast iron spinning machines give you a idea when I am 72 next month and left school at 15 to start work , great thing changed jobs for better pay but still in engineering and retired at 50 🤞🏻👍. Keep up the video work

Have been watching your videos since #1, and it really seems strange to see you working without the sound of a steam engine in the background. Not to worry; I understand that this was a time-sensitive job, and you were obeying the "Get er done" Imperative. And, as usual, I still learned something new.

Dave, I'm wondering why I haven't seen any of your shows on PBS. I have seen various programs by craftsmen & wood workers and frankly, your shows here on TH-cam are so much more enjoyable to watch. I am not a wood worker nor have I spent any time in a machine shop. But I truly enjoy watching a craftsman at work. And, as a long time steam railfan, I respect your dedication to using steam to power your machinery. And especially your preservation of that time when steam was the only power source to operate shop machinery. Have you spoke to any producers about airing your shows on PBS? An artisan such as you deserves to be rewarded for your work & dedication.

Nice video Dave! I remember climbing that hill years ago and it is steep for sure. I need to get back down there sometime soon to ride again. Its only a couple hrs. ride for me so I don't have much excuse for not going. I want to see the shop while I'm there looking around. That would be the ultimate job working in those locomotive shops and I would definitely jump on it if the opportunity arose! If you stop making these videos, I won't have a damn thing to watch.
