    Another useful trick for getting the pulley off if you dont have a strap wrench or air tools is to leave the belt on until you can break the 4 pulley bolts loose

      This method works good?

    7 years later and this video is still useful. also love the sticker reminding you to turn the headlights off, don't know how many times i've left the lights on

      Edit: video is great when the fan clutch nut doesn’t strip and cause you to remove the fan with a sawzall…

    Good video, just completed on my 99. Stuck thermostat, but went in and swapped pump as well. Whatever can go out, will.

    ive always taken a piece of cardboard painted it bright red and taped it on the back of the radiator to prevent a slipped or dropped tool bouncing from damaging the fins or cracking the aluminum fitments (did it with my 85 chevy dropping an impact gun)

    Have an 07 Sport Trac with the 4.0L and I'm gearing up to do mine next weekend. Made it look simple. See ya at the Party line.

    Great video. Excellent job taking your time with the camera. Was just debating whether or not to do it myself, thanks for the nudge!

    I can almost smell the coolant i've done this so often in Rx-7s. yum yum! :D good work, man! good tip on the sealant, too. i've had a few water pumps leak through the gasket because of crappy sealant or cheap gaskets.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +paradoxdesigns yea that sealant is great, oreillys has it idk if you have them in canada but im sure napa has it too. its good stuff, real old school too, alot of the old timers I have talked to are very familiar with it

    Time for me to do the Aerostar. Not really looking forward to it though. I should have done it before when I had radiator out. Live and learn.

    Most of these Ranger pumps are left handed threads. Check the new one for thread direction

    Nice job! im thinking about investing in air tools to make jobs easier at home.. what sort of size compressor will run normal tools?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +James'sWorld 20 gallons or so, you can use a smaller compressor but you have to make sure it has the right CFM rating for the tool. Both should say in the specs or on the box what CFM the tool can be used with. Using a smaller compressor means it will turn on more often.

    What was the reasoning/symptom for replacement?

    • @TheKingOfHalo
      @TheKingOfHalo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These usually leak from the weep hole on the bottom of the water pump before failing. You can see coolant dripping from the weep hole while the engine is running.

    Very helpful. I have a '94 like that, but badged Mazda. (B4000) I've seen fluctuating engine temp and can hear the fan not driven when it ought to be. Obvious fan clutch issue. May as well do the WP while in there.

      Yea water pump isn’t too bad on the 4.0. It’s time consuming on the 3.0

    what is that special clamp that holds the pulley in place? Brand name and part number?
    I'm in process of taking off my water pump and ditch the gasket that came with it and use water pump sealant that is manufactured by permetex

      www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools/loaner-fan-clutch-wrench/p/oemtools-fan-clutch-holding-tool/409637_0_0
      It was a loaner tool from either autozone or oreillys

    I bought a 97 ranger with the 4.0. Coolant looks like it has rust. Water pump you think?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      More than likely they were running straight water in it for a while, do a flush and use regular green coolant 5050. You typically dont need to replace a water pump unless they are leaking however its easy enough to change on these 4 liters

    Another help is to remover the radiator. Since it's drained it's not that big a deal. Also change the upper and lower hoses.

    • @MrLeo7627
      @MrLeo7627 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or at least the Lower hose . You can do the upper hose at a later date without draining the entire coolant.
