How To Program A Lexus RX300 Remote Key Fob 1999 - 2003

1. Start with key out of ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and drivers door is unlocked.
2. Insert key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) and Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1 Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Close, then open drivers door.

B. Insert the key in the ignition cylinder.
C. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
D. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds the power door locks should cycle automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once indicating successful programming. If the door locks do not cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 as your remote has not been accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Close drivers door.

That was the best video ever about key fob programming, locksmith ask me $125 to cut the key and programming the fob now with your video I will just have to cut the key for about $25 bucks thank you very much

@@PYR-Auto can you help i have a 2003 Lexus rx300 i too purchased a key blade and fob online because i only had one working oem fob and key blade. I was able to to get the aftermarket key cut at a local ACE HARDWARE for $15 i got the key blade to start the car by programming it using the press gas pedal 6x and brake pedal 5x now im trying to program the fob portion following the step for add 1 click on ignition to add but i can't get the door lock unlock to cycle DO YOU THINK because i recently had to replace the driver door actuator with an aftermarket actuator this is causing problems. Im not thinking it would because the oem fob works fine locking and unlocking the car. This is a new aftermarket fob with a new battery in it because i can see the red indicator light illuminated when pressing the buttons. I don't want to use any other mode other than ADD because im afraid i might mess something up. I see that up to 4 transmitters can be added to the ecu so im assuming 2 are already used with the 2 factory oem fobs. I dont want to overwrite anything. Any help would be appreciated. As i said the key works in the ignition just need this remote help THANKS!!
You saved me $400...the automotive locksmith wanted $200 for each key programmed...yikes. So I bought my own replacement keys on eBay (least expensive and fastest shipping...Amazon is too expensive and has gotten slower since I refuse to be Prime). I lost the original key and have been using the Valet key provided when I bought the RX300 in 2001. It also had a Master CARD Key with a transmitter within the card, so followed your directions and programmed both easily. I was told numerous times, I'd need a Master key. The CARD key is the Master, so anyone who has this problem...it works. Now just have to have them cut the actual keys (They want $20/ea - long for the old days where you just duplicate the key almost anywhere)...THANKS VERY MUCH!

You are a lifesaver dude. All the videos and forums says change the battery and remote is not working but nothing on what to do if remote still doesn’t work after you change the battery which was my case. I was about to go to the Lexus dealer which without saying would have costed me a lot but saw your video and followed your steps and voila. It fixed the issue. Program Your Remote actually I was so happy that I posted this comment right after it worked for me but unfortunately when I tried the remote after 2-3 hours it didn’t work and when I followed all the steps from your video it didn’t even fix the issue even for a while unlike the very first time. I have Lexus RX 350 2013. Can you please help? It doesn’t have a key start option so couldn’t really replicate the step where you insert the key in n turn on and off. 😏
It sounds like there may be an issue with remote you are using. I would try replacing it.
I can get my RX300 into programming mode with the directions that you gave. For whatever reason though, my key will not program to the car. It used to be programmed and it worked at some point, but it just stopped. The battery in. It is brand new and there's a light that flashes when I press the lock button so I know it's working. Not sure what the problem is
After several attempts I have been unable to get into programming mode. I have tried both the original key from Lexus (already programmed) as well as an aftermarket key (that does indeed work for starting and driving the vehicle), and neither will get the vehicle into programming mode.
Locks do *not* cycle and I am doing 5 complete lock and then unlock cycles in both steps per the video and typed instructions.

You said the locks "do cycle" but I'm assuming that was a typo as the locks cycling would indicate the vehicle was in programming mode? If the locks are not cycling, then I would suggest varying the speed in which you doing the steps (try faster if that doesn't work try slower ) some vehicles are more sensitive than others. In between attempts remember remove the key and open and close the drivers door a couple times to "reset" before trying again.

@@PYR-Auto ty for the reply i figured out that problem. but now i have one more serious problem. I successfully programmed the car key. It opens and closes just fine, but the engine won't start. Maybe the chip inside the car key I bought for $20 on Amazon is the problem? Or do I need some other programming work to start the engine? The first program mode is to register a new car key, and the second mode is to leave the existing one and add it. I tried both, but I haven't tried the third mode, prohibition mode. Is this the solution? If you can help, you will be lucky. Please save my life!!

What I use a remote frm a newer Toyota ?
My key broke off from the chip module. I lost the chip module, but I still have the blade that is cut for my car. Can I buy a new master key, then use my old key blade to have the new one cut. If I do this will the process you just explained make the chip able to start the car?
No, this procedure will only program the remote portion only of the remote-head key

Ok what if the door lock stops working?
I followed your instructions and was able to program to lock and unlock the doors for my 2002 RX300. However, I was not able to start the car with it.
This procedure will program the remote portion of the remote-head key only. Unfortunately, there is no manual way to program the key portion.

Yes, you can program the key to start the car. I just did it with my daughter's 2003 Lexus RX 300. Bought her a key on ebay for Christmas. Follow this:
Key Programming
1. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition. Do not turn.
2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
3. Press and release the brakeicon1.png pedal 6 times.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
6. Press and release the gasicon1.png pedal one time.
7. Wait 1 minute. The securityicon1.png light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed. To end programming step on the brake one time.
Note: Look for your security lighticon1.png. This light will guide you during the programming procedure. The security light will go off at Step 1. It will remain off until Step 6. The security light will be come on and start blink after Step 6 until the key is programmed. If the security light comes on after Step 4 STOP the procedure and start over again.
If you perform this procedure too slowly your caricon1.png will not go into programming mode. If you can not get your car to go into programming mode make sure you are using a master key and not a valet key. If you have a master key then you will probably need to perform this procedure more quickly.
@@christopheranderson7164 THANKS FOR SHARING THIS I got my aftermarket key blade cut at ACE HARDWARE for $15 and followed your steps to get it programmed to start the car now im trying to get the fob programmed to use the buttons and am having problems getting into programming mode i recently had to replace the drivers door actuator with an aftermarket brand but i don't see why that would matter my only oem fob still works fine. I see in his instructions that the ecu in car will allow for up to 4 transmitters so i believe im trying to add a 3rd (2 already from factory) i bought the car from a family friend and i dont believe they ever added any others. Scratching my head cause im halfway there

Excellent video. My programming of 3 keys seemed to go flawlessly until I did the final check at the end. The fobs still aren't actuating the locks. Please help.
Were you getting the door locks to cycle after programming each remote during the procedure ( Step 6. B in the steps in the description box of the video)? Did you remember to close your door at the end to exit programming mode?

Oddly enough, I tried something else I found and used the key to lock and unlock the front doors. After that, the fob worked!

@@impulsepdr2175 having same problem. After pressing the lock button button for 2 seconds, the locks cycle to confirm the remote is programmed, but they still don't work. I did close the doors to get out of program mode. Any ideas what could be the problem?
I had have tried other video clip and still in dark. Found your video and try just one and wow, that work then go back do again for 2 nd key fob(spare) it work good to... 🎇🎇🎇🎇
First thing first, check ground wire cable (normally have 2-3 lead wires)my car stop work on remote key fob (2 keys) After cleaning ground wire, do exactly what you see this video then it should work

This procedure only programs the remote not the key but yes I believe you do need the original key to program a new key.

Are you sure you installed the new battery correctly? Its very common to install them upside down

On my 2001 lexus rx300 the key and remote is all one unit. The lock button on the remote just stopped working. Can I buy an aftermarket blank key with fob and transfer the electronics to my working key that starts the car and then program the remote for locking and unlocking doors using this procedure and will the key start the car ? I just paid $140 to have just a spare key without remote made. Uhggg
Yes, you should be able to place the new "remote portion" in your working key shell and then program the remote portion with this video

1 more question : Is the immobilizer chip inside the sealed electronics for the remote ? If so, wouldnt I also need to do the programming for the immobilzer so the key will start the car ?
The transponder chip is in the shell of the key so it will stay in place when you install the new electronics
I have a 1999 RX 300 and the master key is gone. The only key I have is the basic metal 'valet' key. I don't care about getting a new master key. Can I use this procedure to just program a remote to put on the key ring with my basic valet key? A locksmith told me I'd need a new master key first...
I believe the valet key will prevent you from being able to program the fob, but you could try

I was able to get all the way through Step 7 (Close driver's door) but when I closed the door and pushed the "Lock" button on my key fob, nothing happens. Trust me when I tell you I did this at least 12 times. A remedy to this problem would be greatly appreciated! By the way: fantastic follow-along video!!
If the vehicle responded by going to into programming mode but the remote would not respond - there could be an issue with the remote you are using
That was initially my thought so I tested the current battery in the fob (low) and put in a new one: any other suggestions?
Guess what? After more failed attempts, I left the car overnight: when I tried the remote in the morning, it was working! I'm not sure what changed, but I'll take the win. Lol. Thx so much for your excellent video!

Title of the video says Lexus RX300 but the video is for a Toyota. I am aware that Toyota make Lexus so would it be the same steps for a Lexus?

You may have other issues as this procedure should have no effect on the transponder ignition system.
The Lexus RX300 has a Key with integrated remote. This procedure doesn't match what I've seen on other sites. And it doesn't explain how to register the key.
Correct, an RX300 can use a remote-head key. This procedure will program the remote portion only. If you are seeing a different onboard procedure for the remote, it is incorrect.
