- Classic Game Room reviews CASTLEVANIA: THE ADVENTURE for Game Boy from Konami released in 1989. This straight forward 2D platformer has you playing as an ancestor of Simon Belmont hunting down that bad guy Dracula! This CGR video review of Castlevania The Adventure has gameplay from Castlevania The Adventure on Nintendo Gameboy from 1989.
I still own "CastleVania: The Adventure" for GameBoy, I also enjoy the game!
I've beaten it several times, and it's a tough game to finish! The jumping requires goo timing and accurate landing; the projectiles all have flight patterns you can exploit, and of course bosses have their specific ways of being defeated.
A good game, for sure. Very tough and it could have used more responsive controls, but it's fun once you know your way around each stage and each foe!
I've beaten Castlevania 1, 2 and 3 many times on the NES, as well as Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES...this fucker, however, I've never been able to finish somehow. And I hear people say it's easier than the NES games. WAT? It's so hard!
The second Gameboy game is a bit easier, but I still think it's harder than any of the NES games.
I like your narration. I had more fun watching your review than I did playing this Game Boy game.
Simon's Quest was the first game I bought for the NES. The good o'l days!
Love this game, (due to nostalgia)... it was the 2nd addition to my collection. Wow.
Going back some years now. I was 12 at the time. YIKES!
You know what I love about the new comments section?
The sound the like button makes.
You tricked me, well played, well played
01:28 A cane or an umbrella?
You should try the sequel! It'll rock your socks off. It's a little more forgiving, but I think the controls are better, too.
I had this game! The epic soundtrack brings back many frustrating memories lol
0:21 Seriously! How good is this music! I just love it!
The music in this game... just WOW!
Castlevania II Belmont's revenge has an even better soundtrack. I am eager to reproduce that soundtrack on rock instrumentation!
I could imagine Mark reviewing a parking lot full of cars. Mark says "this is the biggest parking lot of all time, check this car out, it has TURBO" I want mark to make a video of him shopping somewhere, anywhere!!! I love classic game room, more than I love chickens, ha ha ha ha
Man, do I miss this channel
@syxx573. Played Simon's Quest? You don't really move at the degree of speed you'd normally do in other platformers from that period.
The Castlevania Adventure should have an option to use regular boots instead of Link's iron boots. Seriously. The way he walks and jumps makes it feel like Castlevania but with Link's iron boots. Sometimes I can miraculously jump from the first to second rock in the second stage, which are shown at 1:45. Unfortunately, there are about 10 rocks, and it would take 10 miracles for me to make all of those jumps. I can't do it, at least not with the boots.
Wait until you play Castlevania Legends, which has pitch-perfect controls and yet somehow manages to suck even more ass. If you want Castlevania on the old Game Boy, it's Belmont's Revenge all the way.
i bought a gameboy just for castlevania.
as always great review mark.
@Zhylo i didn't know one example you gave from the series means "always"
Jon just really warned me about this game. Thank you, Jon.
Another great review! But I've always wondered, what do you use to record your games and then edit them?
This game is, oh boy. But the music is spot on. Oh, Mark calling "Simon's Quest" the bomb? Mark is the bomb, cause "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" rules and is my favorite Castlevania entry in the long running series.
I bought the castlevainia hand held collection on my ps4 i love them all!🎉
mark, you officially make my day :)
Maybe they release it on the Game Boy Download thing they wanna release soon, with 3D effects.
We need more Original gameboy reviews :)
This was the very first gameboy game I bought in 1989 when I got my gameboy. It was so damn hard!!
Yeah belmond walks soo slooow as if he's is tired from all day working.
Yeah those fucking jumps needs to be pixel perfect, but if you jump on moving platforms you will fall like a rock, this is sooo annoying, also there,re parts were you have be in time to reach another part because if you,re just 1 nano second to late, you will get crunched.
Graphics, sound and music are AWESOME!!
the moment he mentioned simo'n's quest, AVGN cross my mind almost immediately lol
Same. Lol
wasn't the original gameboy in black and white? how does it look in the original?
@Zhylo I can't believe you guys can't see the distinct difference between this slow as molasses game and the other castlevania titles available, even during that time.
Oh you like Simon`s Quest? I heard a lot of negative reviews of it from other people.
I remember liking it when I was younger, but it was so long ago I can`t really be sure.
@syxx573. The other Castlevania games are not really that fast-paced horizontally speaking, compared to parallel game-titles in that era.
i loved using the cinema frame on super game boy! awesome choice.
good, someone else that likes simons quest...I loved that game as a kid
I still have this game. Daaaamn it has ZERO mercy!
Oh snap screen transitions!
@CheapBeer09 Those are a little hard to record unless you have emulators
Brutally hard i beat it today after a total of 30 mins on the first 30mins on the second about 2 hours on the third and about 5 hours on the last level. Completely true that there is only one way to complete the levels and its about finding that way. It was totally worth the effort though and was extremely satisfying once i beat Dracula. Worth picking up if your an extreme old school platforming fan.
Now this is a classic game review
I'm getting this one if/when it releases for 3DS on the Virtual Console. Rigid yeah, but still solid action platforming. And great music. I have the "remake" on the Wii.
Castlevania Legends review next?
This was like the first or second game (after Tetris) I got for my Gameboy as a kid. The controls were so frustrating I actually preferred the Medusa heads and deathtraps from the original Castlevania game.
Yes; level memorization is very important when you're playing games that are nearly impossible.
@kekke2000 Gotta love the game over music!!
I really like the soundtrack, and the only bad part about the remake is that, at least for me, I think they didn't pick the proper virtual instruments to match it's awesomeness
Symphony of the Night still holds the title of the best Castlevania game. Btw, you can get this on the E-shop for $3.
It took me 6 months to beat this back in 1989. I beat it at least 20 times.
Luis Moro beast
lol how could I not guess Mark would love Simons quest!? Is there any game he doesn't like? lol I wish I was as easily pleased
@syxx573. I was more of a Sega-kid, so I guess I did't play many of the "slower" Nintendo-games. Although in my eyes there are games that move quicker than Castlevania.
@Juggler1711 Remember when Ray was still around cgrundertow, there was a poster (well a sheet of paper with two other game's crossed out) that sometimes had Fester's Quest wrote on it? Yeah Mr. Rolfe disagrees there as well.
Aah, that brings back memories!
how do i send games to CGR?! i have no idea and have like a crap load i wanna send :/
@CaptainPoovabladoo What about simons quest?
@DejectedPanda true but the Medusa heads are the most frustrating enemy in any castlevania game; even if you memorized their attack pattern...you are still gonna get hit and turn into stone.
Yeah, Mark is a good reviewer. :)
@BacktoBasics88
looks like an epic 1989 hand held game to me :)
I love John Tron's drunk review of this game.
I had this game as a kid, never knew the name though because the sticker on the game cartridge was ripped off when i my grandma taped it (yes taped) to our front door when we were gone one day. I could've just have read the title screen, but didnt.
This CastleVania game was remade to the Wii,so that may be much faster to play!
@thebaggedavenger you've never heard anything good about Simon's quest?
@Guernicaman He has some behind the scenes videos he's done where he shows his capture equipment, editing computer, etc. Search his vids for "Behind the Scenes", and also "Remaking of OMEGA BOOST lost review" to see him editing a video.
He could review one of his reviews and it would be worth watching.
I freaking hate this game so freaking much.
same here man. i love a lot of cv games but the early ones r pretty shit tbh.
ninjanizzle
Actually I find most of the old ones to be awesome, but this game. Konami really screwed up this one. The only thing worse they could do is start making their games mobile only. Oh, wait...
Anonymous_X well to me cv1 was a good game, but i find it cheap and unbalanced. i got as far as the grim reaper and the game became a joke. cv2 was crap imo. cv3 was better, but it didnt keep my attention or interest long enuf to beat it. the cv games for the gb were crap too imo. now Super CV4 was a str8 classic, easily 1 of my fave snes games. i loved sotn for ps1 but hated the n64 ones. i also enjoyed the gba and ds games. again i didnt like the ps2 games or the first 1 for xbox360. i dont really feel cv works in 3d tbh, but ive definitely enjoyed the later games in the series more than the earlier ones.
I kinda like it (especially the music). Maybe I'm just weird.
Nanofuture87 well konami games usually had good music back then, so i cant knock u for that.
I only had a Gameboy growing up, so these are the games of my child hood.
Castlevania 2 was a million times better.
I could never ever finish this game. There was one jump. After the spikes that move upwards that you have to climb over, the spikes start coming from the right and you have to run/jump to the end of the level. There was always one jump that I could never make it was so frustrating!
Tom Servo, Crow and Mike would like to be in the Super Game Boy audience.
@thebrainstorm9803
I couldn't disagree more. The game boy had amazing graphics all thing considered. It came out in 1989, with a processor from the lat 70's, but somehow they kept making games for it, for 11 years!
That Castelvania game looked exactly like the NES games.
james rolfe likes simons quest, he just doesnt like certain aspects, he's mentioned it in a video before
"before it needed to be in 3d" hahahahahahahahahaha.... that's a good one Mark.
with the cinema backdrop it reminds me of ms3tk
Best way to play this one is in the Konami GB Pack - it's faster and more responsive, I think. And it comes with Probotector/Contra. You really can't go wrong.
This game was remade for the Nintendo Wiiware as Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth
inst that man with the hat and the cane chaplin?
Alright everybody, James Rolfe has admitted to loving Simon's Quest as well. He just really thinks it had some faults with it.
There's a patch for this game that makes Christopher walk faster, and not have his whip downgraded when he gets hit!
I love the remake!!! Anyway, the theater theme reminds me of certain moviesh things in CV III
@bestfilmz Yeah... A platic bag is amazing on it's own...
@lacurapuneta I think he gets most of the games he reviews though gamefly, and that game's in such high demand right now it's hard to get. I know I have a gamefly and they have it listed as low availability
@thesoup292 you think this s a cod rip off or was it supposed to be a joke? i am confused xD
You are a true fan if you watch Mark's reviews in the highest quality because he didn't pay a lot of money for a HD camera for nothing just so it would go to waste. Just saying.
@unclesoflaugh
Yes, Special Project
Wikipedia FTW!
It looks like the enemy that killed the Belmont at the very end was tea-bagging him >_>
@bestfilmz WTF is platic, maybe Plastic.. but idk what platic is
Underrated game. It's not as good as the 2nd on the Gameboy, Belmont's Revenge, but is stil ok and much cheaper.
@gamesgark100 the castlevania game? I think its good. Most of his videos are awsome.
Holy shit Mark, how do you have time to eat and wash when you review so many games?
Another nice video by the way.
@Zhylo this was the 3rd game boy game I owned
@bestfilmz He could help everybody choose between paper and plastic... I fonly he did the the same with Pokemon Red and Blue
James actually also likes Simons Quest. He said it in 'What was i thinking" epsiode of AVGN, but still finds it annoying, and yeah i know that your comment wast posted almost a year ago :D
Oh shit, I knew Castlevania Rebirth looked familiar. It's based on this game!
@Juggler1711 Seriously, who cares? AVGN himself admitted that he was completely unfair towards the game, and he enjoyed it. Simon's Quest IS bad ass. I loved it. I play it every couple months.
i remember this game i used to have it ;)
wow I remember that I played this game XD
I love it when games are available ebayisibly
I always end up finding myself being lost when playing any Castlevania Game :)
Dude it's a linear 4-level game lol
@@Suedeash well when i was younger the metroid vania style games always confused me in general.
can u make a Burnout review? i would love to see that :)
hi this is michelle bochman, and well, this is it. Its FRIDAY, FRIDAY, GOTTA GET DOWN ON FRIDAY!
i totally suck at precision platformer games, it had atmosphere tho, ....well i think it had honestly :D
Who brings a cane to a theatre to watch Castlevania? Dr. Gregory House does.
Seriously, Mark, there's something wrong with your Super GameBoy cart. Those dots should not be all over the background. You even commented about it in your Street Fighter II GameBoy review.
the best game ever created in history just blows my mind
