    Games on DREAMCAST are really improved. 60FPS and more detailed colors and textures are really making a difference. In the years of release, that could be less noted. Because of the old tube TVs. Now with high resolution, HDR, and more color capable tvs, monitors, hardware and stream speed and quality, this is really a huge gap between PS1 and DREAMCAST.

      I feel like this ended up hurting to some degree since I'm sure many people were expecting a more noticeable jump in graphics. The higher resolution wasn't even that big of a deal back then due to most people still playing on CRTs via composite.

    First off it's quite the dedication to put together this video so good job.
    My takeaway having owned both of these devices when they were released the PlayStation holds up well against the more powerful and much later released Dreamcast on many titles.
    I spent so much money back in these days chasing the most powerful gaming system, including the super expensive 3DO, SegaCD, TurboGrafx 16, and nearly purchased the Neo•Geo as well but the games were INSANELY expensive at around $200 USD per. Hell I purchased the N64 just to play Mario64, $200 to play one game...I had it bad 😂

      I've heard of the "PC Master Race" on Reddit but you were a console master race back then lol! I think you made a wise choice not getting the AES as I don't think that console was worth it unless you're really into fighting games. It's funny you mention the Turbografx because I think that's the system most close to the Dreamcast in a historical sense. When the PC Engine came out in '87 it was way more graphically advanced than its main competition of the SMS & NES but then got stuck competing against the next gen of consoles not too long after that.

      Those RE games are a great example of what can go wrong with these ports. For the Dreamcast some of it higher resolution but the backgrounds aren't so it's this weird blend. The more blurry graphics of the PS1 do give it that more unsettling feel too.

    Some of the remasters are really kickass but I don't like it when 2D pixel art is changed or replaced. Simply displaying a lot of these old 240p games in 480p is already a mindblowing upgrade. That said, I only saw a handful of games where Dreamcast wasn't superior. Its specialty was high resolution(for the time) 2D and damn did it ever do that well.
    I love Dreamcast because of its unique niche as an inter-generational console. It's not really 5th gen and not really 6th gen either. It has a ton of games from both and pretty much every release it got was very polished. It wasn't quite as powerful as 6th gen consoles but it had a very simple architecture that was easy to work with. Devs in general seem to have had an easier time squeezing more power out of Dreamcast. For that reason and others, the OG Xbox is sometimes considered its immediate successor. Sega actually had a hand in designing the Xbox.
    Also, for such a short-lived console it has a really massive library. Such a shame it didn't do better in the US. It had the power to run a lot of later 6th gen titles okay and still had untapped potential. The fact that a lot of really important Dreamcast releases never had an English translation really sucks. Like Mobile Suit Gundam federation vs Zeon DX. The Gamecube was screwed in a very similar way.

    It's crazy how lazy some of the ports for the Dreamcast were. Increased display resolution and texture resolution were the only things done on many of those. The Dreamcast could do about 10x the polygons that the PS1 could but devs didn't feel like remaking the models so you still got blocky characters that actually kind of looked worse because they were much clearer at the higher resolution.

    • @Leeki85
      @Leeki85 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was rather such ports or nothing. Dreamcast user base was rather small and publishers were only doing these ports, because how simple they were. Dreamcast had so much power compared to PS1 that you could take C code of PS1 game and just rewrite API calls to what Dreamcast had. Such games would run at 640x480 with larger draw distance and sometimes better textures, without any hardware specific optimizations.
      These ports were also made for PC and while GPUs back then were already more powerful to what Dreamcast had, there was a huge gap between low-end and high-end PCs.
      Such ports could run at PS1 resolution with PS1 graphics on low-end hardware, often in software without 3D acceleration or at 1280x1024 at 100 FPS on high-end GPUs paired in SLI.
      For some reason there's very few Dreamcast-like games on PC. Games quickly shifted from PS1 ports to PS2 ports. At one moment games required 233 MHz CPU with GPU and few months later it was like 700 MHz minimum, when games started targeting PS2, Gamecube and Xbox.

  • @Icehawk2k7
    @Icehawk2k7 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    It's interesting seeing how some of the games were pretty much just phoned in for the Dreamcast port by simply running it at higher resolution and framerate without any real asset changes and then others you can really see the big generational difference in capabilities with not just the res and framerate but also poly counts/ texture details, and background details and draw distance. This selection also showcases just how well optimized PS1 was at the end of its generation with some of the titles still looking and running pretty decent next to the DC port even thought its at lower settings. The one game I really notice PS1 had problems on was Shadow Man with massive framerate drops and quite distorted visuals.

      It's cause games were still being made with the PS1 in mind first and ported to DC afterwards. So the games were pushing the PS1 pretty hard, but the DC not so much.
      Because of the DC's 2.5 year lifespan I'd argue it never reached its full potential. Even in a few years the jump in quality from Sonic Adventure to Adventure 2 was immense. Imagine what devs could've squeezed out had the system lasted til 2005 or 2006.

I'll have to sift through it when I have more time. It's no surprise at allm because of the selective bias that often is forgotten: Games existing on multiple systems that have been around before the stronger system have first been made and optimized for the older one and then where ported to the newer system later. This nearly always means that the newer system won't even be remotely used to it's full potential. For comparing the hardwares' capabilities you would need to check the exclusive game son the later one, or some specifically selected where you know before, that they had been optimized more than to the bare minimum for the later conversion :)
      This video shows that nearly all these games are just using a higher resolution on the Dreamcast and most have higher fps,. because these are the two things that come mostly automatically by running them on the newer hardware. But you usually won't find crisper textures, higher polygon count more more objects or particles on screen in these conversion. Of couorse the Playstation 1 still was a good system for it's time, maybe the most advaned console ever relative to it's contemporary situation.

      My Dreamcast is still the cleanest of all my consoles because of how less I used it because of only few (not even 20) games.
