    probably the best review on this bike I have heard in a while...I've tested this one in Portugal and almost bought it...then my conscious told me to hold on and wait to get my motorcycle license first (in many countries you can ride a 125cc with a drivers license) and spend a bit more money on a Triumph.

    Interesting, I have not heard of these bikes stateside yet. I have the same feeling riding my Royal Enfield Classic Chrome 500. Fun to ride, light, looks great and relatively inexpensive. The older I get the more appreciate the ride and less I need the horsepower.

    • @DickWhistles
      @DickWhistles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the comment. I don't think you'll see these Stateside. They are too small for the American market (maybe you'll see a 250 or 400 of some iteration). But you definitely won't see a Mutt. The entire success of these Chinese clone bikes is the initial import, repackaging and then selling on domestically. Unless Mutt sells a license and has a American shop to repackage them... which is not impossible, but unlikely.
      The entire reason Enfiled produced the twins was to penetrate the US market.
      Ride safe.

      Suzuki has a couple of 200cc bikes on the market that are still Japanese-made.. The VanVan is retro scramble-tastic, and the DR200 is a proper dual-sport. A few other Chinese 125s available here, too. One of the best Retros is the Sym Wolf 150 Classic, which is made in a Taiwanese factory that used to do licensed Honda copies (much nicer f&f than many Chinese bikes on the US market) - it's literally just a rebadged CB!

    • @DickWhistles
      @DickWhistles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregory Steffensen That’s good to hear. The small displacement Suzuki badged products here are a mix between Japanese and Chinese made. The Vstrom 250 is Chinese manufactured. The VanVan is a 125 over here and for a long time was the only “cool” learner legal bike. Big devoted following. Glad to hear the DR is still available - gem of a bike.

    Such a fulsome review, but it seems well deserved. It was enjoyable viewing. Not so much the appliance of science, more the appliance of taste, engineering and economics. I think this review will be regular viewing for me (I'm not sad, just saving). I'm getting a 125 to pass my licence. Now, I'm only 63, and I intend to get a Vulcan S soonest. However, when I'm old, I will revert to a 125. I look forward to riding of into the sunset on a Mutt ;-))

    I bought an FSR! Been riding it now 4 months and I bought the bike off the back of this video. The Hilts wasn’t for me, but it got me looking into them. I decided to go for the FSR as it looks more to my liking but more importantly to my side as I’m only 5’ 8” and I prefer to be able to put both feet comfortably on the floor. Anyway.. thank you for the superb review, really really enjoyed it and watched it soo many times I’ve lost count. I helped me in going for a Mutt. Thanks again and all the best!

    I wanted to hate any bike named Mutt, but now you've told me the origin of the name: The Great Escape character played by the late great (and greatest of all actors), biker in the real world Steve McQueen, I have to love the thing.
    If you look at the promo stills of his jump scene, the bike used did magically transform, mid sequence, from the stolen '40s German bike into a '70s dirt bike, so definitely very similar to this model. The lads in Brum did a good job.
    And I well remember my 1975 CB125 making a respectable 70mph with a blown silencer, and sounding even better than the Mutt. Really miss that bike. Hoping my Varadero is as much fun when I finally fix it.

    Those little Suzukis are great small-disp motors. The DR200 was my learner bike, and I often consider picking up one of the VanVan 200s as a city hooligan bike now that they're available stateside.

    Top review. The Royal Enfield Meteor comes to mind - I'm thinking that paying more for a Mutt 250 is a hard sell in comparison, even if you don't get a great deal more power from the Meteor's extra cc's (and as you mention the price of their 125's isn't far behind). When the engine's this cheap, Suzuki replica or not it I think it puts a price ceiling on a little bike like this even with Mutt's styling. If they lowered the price by £7-800 then I'd be more interested.

    A great review, Dick, thanks. Glad you liked the bike. A lot of what you said chimes in with my feelings about my Sinnis Apache, (which has a different frame and forks, but same engine etc). I do find my machine a bit lacking on a dual-carriageway road (queues of lorries waiting to pass me!) but on normal country roads it’s great. Mutt certainly have the right look, but your bike was nearly 2x the price of mine... thanks again, I enjoyed this video. Les

      Leslie Austin Thanks for the comment. I know the Mutts are on the high end for these bikes, but the plus side is there is not the endless list of mods and upgrades that most Sinnis and Herald owners slowly tick off. Great review! Been looking at getting this bike for my commute to work from Maidenhead to East London, approx 33 miles with a dual carriageway. I'm not an experienced rider and don't have a full license but your review has given me some confidence with choosing this bike for this journey at my experience level. I'm still totting up whether the time will be better over the train but at the moment it's 1hr20 door to door and the ride seems to match that (not incl. motorways) on Google Maps, but I assume being on a motorbike it may be quicker as I'll have the ability to weave through some of the heavier traffic. At a cost of £3500 compared to my £4000 annual train ticket its looking quite favourable. Just to have the freedom alone along with a bit of fun. I'm strongly considering it. Thank you again for your very comprehensive review! It's helped me a lot.

      I prefer the Brixton right now , but only because there are more dealers around, and they are cheaper.
      In germany we just have 1 Mutt dealer i guess.
      but the mutt seems to have a better quality , especially in the Cockpit.

      If mutt added the tyres and there a good brand they maybe reasonable in the wet. A lot of Chinese bikes come with tyres made of plastic. Even these days a 50/50 is still better than the tyres we had in the 60/70/80's. I think the bogart road tyres are probably worse in the wet than my TCK80's

      thanks splodge 57 , i live in the isle of skye , and here it rains a lot . your point about the tyres is an important detail as i am thinking of getting one of these.Although the weather can be crap , it would be perfect for our CRAP roads up here..i take it you mean the tyres can lose their grip on banking in wet or slippy conditions ? i am used to that possibility as i ride on fat nobbles on mountain bikes i have used over the years .i understand the weight difference,i assume if you dont put her to far over then she wont put you down .in some cases ? thanks again..

Also, without wishing to be too personal, are you a fairly light person?
