Hello for those 10th grader students out there who are here just because of their schoolworks on music. Good luck to all of us and don't be too hard on yourself. Let's face our study strongly. It'll be tough but I know we can do this. :)

It's a bit funny to hear anyone complain that this is not how a piece should be done, the composer didn't intend, and so on. As if no musical piece should ever be done differently than some official version. I'll bet these musicians had a great time doing this, and the result speaks for itself.
Thanks, JBT. You nailed it. The students loved doing this, and they learned a lot more about early electronic music than they ever could in a classroom.
Wow. It was great hearing this again. I somehow got the original recording around 1970 (probably taped it from radio) when I was in high school, and listened to it a lot back then. I had since forgotten about it and hearing it again performed by your ensemble brought it right back. This work was a major influence on my life as an Artist. Thanks for bringing it back to me. It sounds better than ever.
+Ed Tannenbaum Thanks Ed. A major influence on me too. I was turned on to it by my junior high school (!) music teacher, and then recorded it off the radio (WBAI, New York) a few years later. It was a huge amount of fun reconstructing it for this ensemble, and I still consider it a work in progress.
+Ed Tannenbaum Matt Edwards, on the Tuesday morning "new music" program. Not too many years later I was working with Matt at WNCN, and told him about the show. He remembered it well.
Interesting. I didn't know that this piece was ever performed live, I thought it was strictly pre-recorded tape. Of course the students here have access to technology that Varese didn't have in 1958.
It was not composed for live performance--it was a work on tape. As far as I know, this was the first time it was ever performed live. I had to write the score and parts by ear.
The beginning of the song sounds very simple and has only a few notes. Toward the middle, more sounds are introduced and they are closer together. The end of the song sounds like a tune that documentaries would play.
I much prefer the original version. But I still applaud for audacity and performance ! Je préfère nettement la version originale. Mais j'applaudie quand même pour l'audace et la performance 👏
First time hearing Poeme electronique. Thanks so much for bringing Varese to me. I listen to this and it's like I'm watching a film at the same time. I would love to create a short film out of this, would it be possible to have/license a copy of the performance?
Could you send me the guitar tabs please? I'd like to play this at my church fundraiser. Wait, on second thought, maybe a transcription for SATB choir would be more appropriate.
What was Varese's process to produce Poeme Electronique. Was it done in a similar way to this with several players and a conductor, or was it him in a studio adding things one by one to the tape?
This was a piece for tape alone, created by Varèse in the studio. There were other personnel involved helping him make and collect the sounds, but there was no conductor or "performance" in any sense of the word, except for the composer assembling and mixing the sounds on tape. The idea of doing the piece with a live ensemble is original to us, and I believe this was the first time it's ever been done this way.
Would you be kind to tell us what is the structure or philosophical underpinning of this composition, or point us to some source that can explain that?
Let me just add that I'm only here because I'm taking a music class to finish the humanities portion of my degree. Up to this point, I have enjoyed the material from the classical/ banquette periods and can understand why people consider it as art. However, this is NOT art. This is a series of sounds played by a computer. It took me a second to realize the sounds I was hearing was not my headphones malfunctioning but the performance.
@@LeFnob difference is people make melodies with guitar and this sounds like someone smashed a piano and transposed whatever was played into pieces for the ensemble
I am giving this the 'thumbs down' because Poeme Electonique was specifically 'composed' by Varese on tape for playback in the Philips Pavilion. The composer never expected, or anticipated, that it would be performed live.
It lacks the spatialisation, wich take a very important place in the composition. However I think Varèse would approve this as he said the stereo version give an idea of what it was at the pavillon.

I recorded it from WBAI too. Steve Post? Bob Fast? We are in parallel universes.

Don;t have either of those. Would you be interested in the version for five zithers and two ocarinas?
LOL. Great performance, by the way; this was one of the most interesting pieces they taught us in Music Literature class back in college.
@Paul Lehrman, what does it sound like on Ocarinas?
awsome
Hi classmates hehe

Interesting construction for live performance. But the end here doesn't have the apocalyptic feel of the original.

Guitar music is a series of sounds played by bits of metal.

Aren't they reproducing it here on their instruments live? I consider that at least as good as the arbitrary limitations Varese decided to work with.
It lacks the spatialisation, wich take a very important place in the composition. However I think Varèse would approve this as he said the stereo version give an idea of what it was at the pavillon.

Je ne vois vraiment pas l'intérêt de cette version "instrumentale" du Poême électronique de Varèse. L' oeuvre originale de suffit à elle même.
