Everyone's still waiting around for "excruciating" info, related to buttermilk substitutes, in the recipe page. With my lactose intolerance, I'd go for diluted thick yogurt or sour cream... Which of these - if any - would you favor, pls ? Thanks for answering a Paris-based dedicated follower of your great "cooking-means-zest-for-life" (highly therapeutic, btw) program! I'd go as far as translating into French subtitles, people here do suffer extra historically (& culturally) - issued severe culinary inhibitions... 👍

Well I'm not going to get all up on my high horse about your potato and drinking comments about us Irish as we all know they were tongue and cheek, plus my profile picture would not support any such argument :D
So yea, never seen that recipe before. Way more complicated than my own.
I just mix 500g of both Flour and Natural Yoghurt, 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt, mix together with as little work as possible, cross on the top and throw in oven. From start to finish (excluding pre-heating the oven) it can be done in less than 5 mins, inc cleaning up.
Oh and yes, the cross is obligatory, its the law

I’ve made soda bread (no fruit) several times before, and it has been really dry every time except ONE. I’m getting ready to make Chef John’s recipe tonight...we’ll see how it turns out for me.
My brown bread, on the other hand, is always spectacular. I prefer to make muffins instead of a single loaf, and I sweeten it a LOT - and I include fresh blueberries. It cooks much faster (about 15 minutes), and the doneness is always more consistent than when I put it in a tin.
Sadly for me, I’m not from Ireland. We’ve taken vacations in the southern half of the Republic for the last two years (the M6 between Galway and Dublin is about as far north as we’ve been), and we just returned to the US from Ireland last week. Beautiful land, people, food, and culture!

This could be nice toasted. Then obviously with ridiculous amounts of butter. Thankfully Winco here has Derigold.

His version is light because he adds an egg but traditional soda bread does not have egg.

We add Caraway to ours, and a little butter and a sprinkling of sugar across the top. So much more flavorful.

This video is mocking me for not being in the kitchen enough to realize that the soda part of the bread came from the baking soda. I honestly thought about the carbonated soda drinks...

There is a period after zest. There should be a YES after Raisins, Currents & Caraway seeds. Just flour would be the recipe fpr pancakes.

Oh, Dear sweet John, in a hundred years, someone is going to do a parody clip of your ancient TH-cam cooking videos... like a phoenix rising from the BBQ ashes... and you've just provided the editor with a good "gash." For shame!

This isn't particularly related to this video, but, due to being sleep deprived, drunk, or possibly just somewhat enlightened, it just occurred to me that your tagline, "... and, as always, enjoy!" is pretty much the finest philosophy around.
Somewhat more related to this video, I find myself tempted to make "Jewish soda bread" by swapping the whole wheat flour and oats for rye flour, and the dried fruits for caraway seeds. Of course, I'm no baker, so the results might be disastrous!

Adding the grated lemon or orange or tangerine is what makes this so delicious. When I make it tomorrow, I plan to use maple syrup (because I'm from northern New England and don't have any honey). I plan to add golden raisins along with the currants and go light on the caraway seed.
