From the spectral cries that echo over one of London's former execution grounds, to the shadowy monk who keeps a lone vigil inside London's oldest parish church. From a timeless hostelry that has changed little since Charles Dickens had Ebenezer Scrooge drop in to take his "melancholy dinner", to the ghostly bell that once tolled to foretell the passing of its parish's vicar.
Ghostly nurses, a notorious Victorian murderess, a mummified former citizen, a hideous black dog, and a persistent pong that hangs heavy in the air of the tunnels at a City underground station; all these await you as we set out to explore the timeless streets of the old City of London.
So join me as we set out to search for the spirits of bygone times at some of old London's most atmospheric places.
My local pub is haunted. It has a headless pint! Happy Halloween everyone.
ahhahaha
Same with my local, it's been the scene of many roberies, unfortunately this continues to even the present day.. every time you go to the bar 😅
🙌😂
😂😂😂😂😂❤
Hahahaha... a good spirit then
A very strange thing happened to me one night on the London Underground. It was many years ago after I had finished a late shift at Guy's Hospital when I was a nurse. It must have been around 11.30pm as I stood on London Bridge northern line to Bank platform. I was a little nervous as I was the only one waiting for the next train. All of a sudden a young child's voice singing London Bridge is Falling Down echoed through the platform. It was so very spooky. I wondered if it was one of the staff who had his or her child with them playing a trick on me. The weird thing was the voice seemed to emanate from the tunnel. If it was a trick the child was very good as it sang continously for about 20 seconds or so. There was no giggles. It was very odd and I've never forgotten it. I was so relieved when the train came.
Work the day shift next time.👍l would absolutely s. ..t myself.
The London underground is supposed to be incredibly haunted children have died down they too on March the 1943 they was a air raid siren and a deadly crush at the Bethnal Green station I believe 172 people died including 62 children
So spooky! What were the lyrics?? The words have subtly evolved over the years, you might be able to work out when the song words date from!! My daughter learnt different lyrics in nursery school than I learnt in nursery school, and my daughters Nanny Rose, who was born just after the war in the East End, learnt totally different words to both of us! Subtly but very different....
I always wanted to see London. Now ,I am so riddled with RA in my old age, I am thankful for wonderful stories like these. I travel with my eyes, and ears which thankfully still work!! Enjoy these stories so much!! Thank you!!
You, sir, are a most perspicacious scholar of creepy, historical Olde London. Thank you for tickling our ghoulish sensibilities, especially at this most auspicious time of year. Cheers from Canada.
Thank you kindly
He s NOT perspicacious his parents were married before he was born
I cannot express my gratitude for your wonderful storytelling!! Brilliant, I enjoyed every moment.
That is really kind of you to say so. I'm pleased you enjoy it.
@@JackTheRipperToursI could not agree more with Mikki, your channel and everything about it is wonderful!
Brilliant storytelling really enjoyed it 😊thank you
I haven’t been in London since 96. First, let me say how much I love London I love love history. The people were absolutely amazing. Absolutely wonderful. It was great to walk around the streets at night of Soho and just have fun. I love you London. And I love your ghosts.
I would love to go again, but I dont want to be shot, stabbed or blown up....
I spent 10yrs in London all the 90s and loved and hated it, but also my best memories are there 😊
My first trip was in 1993 and I have been back several times since.
It has changed and not all for the better. It is dirtier and more dangerous.
I certainly wouldn't walk about at night alone as I once did.
I still enjoy it, but it isn't what it was and that is a great pity.
@@pattierotondo1108 The murder rate in London in 1993 was 2.3 per 100,000 people in 2021 it was 1.4 per 100,000 people. It is actually less dangerous today.
I'm glad ghost feel they can Chill in London these days. I wouldn't mind seeing some chilling Ghost enjoying afterlife
Great stuff here! To anyone who liked this video, be sure to pick up Richards' book "Haunted London". It has become one of my favorites, lots of great pictures, and I refer to it often.👍
Thanks for that!
Nicely done ghost walk. Thanks. The Black Dog of Newgate and the spectre of Amelia Dyer are some of my favourites. There's so many haunted locations in London. Queen's House in Greenwich spooked me since childhood, with that eerie photo of the ghost ascending the Tulip Stairs. 👻
Yes, that picture is insanely creepy!
Maybe now that Charles is king he can do something about all the horrid modern buildings that he always hated. He wasn't alone! Maybe he can pave the exteriors with some nice old fashioned bricks and stone columns.
Absolutely adore your narration Richard. Your the best there is. Listened to you for years. Thankyou so much you've made my night.
That's really kind of you, Diane. Pleased you enjoyed the video.
So, so interesting. As for the George and Vulture, In the very early 1970's, my then boss took me there for lunch and for YEARS, every time I was in London I searched for this place, scouring the area to no avail as I didn't know its name. I'm no spring chicken now🤣 but hope to make a visit before I'm kicking up the daisies. Otherwise, I might give it a haunting of my own!
Awesome, well researched stories, this channel deserves more subscribers and views.
Much appreciated!
That was wonderful. So well researched, written & narrated. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is this the same Richard Jones narrating that runs The London Ghost Walk...? I've bookmarked your website because I'd love to do a tour when I arrive in London in a couple years. I'm a big fan! This vlog was wonderful and I've saved it in my UK watchlist to watch over and over again, to whet my whistle as to what to expect when I do your tour. Well worth watching!
Indeed it is me! Look forward to welcoming you onto the London Ghost Tour. If you need any suggestions of other things to do in London please feel free to ask.
It gives me joy, that even in this Modern hightech age, we honour the past not only with dry facts, but all so with some good old fashioned ghost stories.
Thankyou so much. Excellent research and presentation! A lot of work has gone into this. Very enjoyable! 😊❤
Very kind of you to say so. I'm pleased that you enjoyed it.
I can only hope, Mr. Jones, that when you added the tolling bell at the end of the segment on Gabriel of St. Andrew by the Wardrobe, that it was merely a common bell sound effect and not a recording of Gabriel itself. Otherwise, I fear you may have cursed many of your subscribers here! Another magnificent journey you have taken us on. Well done, sir.
I think I remembered to use a substitute bell, Rollin, although my memory isn't what it was! Can I offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience or curses caused if it was, in fact, the real Gabriel!
Very professional and well presented..Enjoyed every moment.
Thank you for saying so, Ruth. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
I worked on the old theatre block over 50 years ago now . Jasmine often manifested herself ,any time of the day or night. Though it seemed more frequently in the middle of the night. I dont think anybody ever saw or heard Jasmine. Only a distinctly creepy feeling when you smelt her presence.
Have you been back lately? It has changed beyond recognition!
I love London. English History was my favourite subject in school. My first trip to London was in 2013. Enjoyed Dickens Walk. My hosts, an old school friend and her husband, had strung all historical facts into the one month I was there. History was revealed to me. Too old now to travel otherwise would love to go to London again. I am from Kolkata India
Thanks for sharing!
Brilliantly detailed well told as expected 👏 👍 ❤
Thank you 🙂
Thank you for all, my good man!
My pleasure.
Thank you for creating this video. I really enjoyed it especially as I used to work in the City and also visit Barts Hospital.
My pleasure, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Thanks for a measured narration. I find many narrators gabble at such a speed that I miss a lot
When, or if, you genuinely see a ghost, and you have time to actually say to yourself 'this is an apparition that my eyes are seeing', its really quite envigorating.
Its happened to me twice and following both occasions, I felt as though I could have happily climbed a mountain.
Extraordinary!
People who don't believe in ghosts have just never seen one.
Actually, that's not true. Most people don't believe in ghosts till they see one. I never did until it happened to me. Lol@@davidhudson1711
Personally I find the experience is either timed poorly inspiring me to tell them we are not doing this right now but thanks for popping by, or at times it can be quite sleep inducing for me which is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your breakdown of haunted London!Well Done old boy!!Cheers,Mate!!
“According to Psychic News..” Ok, I’m gonna need to stop you right there.
Apparently they don't sell many copies because the potential readership already know what's in it
Interesting and spooky. Happy Halloween! 👻🎃
Same to you!
Another fascinating and well-presented episode. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant. As always!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you so much for that seasonal expedition, it was really Spook-tacular. 👻👻🎃🎃
My pleasure, Happy Halloween!
Thank you! This has been so fascinating. I found the bell 🔔 creepy!!
Thank you 💕 so much for your excellent storytelling and research . I used to work in the City a long time ago and now I'm over 70 year's old I do wish I could go back to my Salad Days . The pub's in the City all closed at around 7pm and I remember a song vaguely.. about it , is the " Oyster Bar " still there ?
Hi Suzanne, pleased you enjoyed the video. Sweetings is still going strong selling oysters.
hello richard, i love your channel this is right up my street ghost stories etc, i love it love the history of the stories xx
I’m a resident of the big smoke & the years of history are palpable 😮
I really enjoyed that. Thanks Richard.
Pleased you enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this. Excellent spookiness.
This was so much fun I subscribed.
I love being in London, there is something about the atmosphere in the city. I don't know what it is, but there's nothing better than wandering up and down the streets and unknown places on dark evenings. Maybe, after all, I can sense something spooky...
Love your descriptive prose, very entertaining video, thank you.
NICE ONE INDEED!! RICHARD JONES. 🤣 "THE BELL"😂!! MANY THANKS FOR THE GHOST STORIES !!! ST. ANDREWS BY THE WARDROBE !! BEFORE THE EXPLANATION ! I THOUGHT SUCH A BIZZARE TITLE FOR A CHURCH !!!!!🙄🙄! FROM, U.K.(2023).
Glad I cleared it up!
Could listen to you all day
Deliciously creepy - very enjoyable, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent, will watch tonight 👍thank you.
Hope you enjoy!
38:30 "This, as you may recognize, is a matinance service elevator. Still in operation. Waiting for you. We invite you, if you dare, to step aboard because in tonight's episode you are the star and this elevator travels directly to the Twilight Zone."
Spooky! Although I think it was a visitor to the church who kept walking into my shots!
This was great, thanks 👍
Such a wonderful and well researched stories. I’m scared to bits. Thank you
Happy Halloween from Virginia…thanks for another spooky video 👻 🎃
Same to you!
I always wonder how the City would look had the fire not happened.
perspicacious I will have to look that up. Anyway I really do enjoy the way this man talks through history.
I love the richness history of ghosts and the stories that they can tell to us.
Brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you Sir. I’m a new subscriber and enjoyed this video very much. 🤗🇨🇦
Fascinating stuff! Many thanks :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Marvelous
Excellent, thank you
Well written. Thanks Richard.
Very welcome
@22:32 To be fair, I often feel like hurling ashtrays to the ground as well, disgusting things.
Would you rather if we trow cigarette ends on the floor then...?
An excellent choice….and a great guide😄👍👍….to explore central London….especially on winter….dark….nights…as I love….to do…myself 🧛🏻
So interesting.
Great interesting video as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
Oh yeah.
Come to think of Railways.
One day, when returning from France, on June the 9th 1865, all of Charles Dickens's Railway Nightmares came true, until he was involved in a terrific train crash accident at Staplehurst in Kent.
The accident took place on a viaduct.
Ten people died in the accident.
The accident would prop Dickens to write his finest Ghost Story called The Signalman.
Wonderful ❤
Thank you, excellent storytelling, perfect for October 31, 2023!
Thank you for a fantastic and scar vlog. I would love to go on one of your tours.
Thankyou, I lived in a haunted flat for 2 weeks here in New Zealand, strange hummings sound continuous, the shower curtain lifting up with no wind or reason, the string for the blinds was always tied in crazy knots when i got home, i also saw face to face a scribbled brown face. I had horrible dreams and the colurs in the room wd change from green the yellow black, very active haunting, i then meet two other people that had lived there and they had the same experience.
Hare Krishna
A good presentation😉
Thank you. It was intriguing. Wish they’d clean the tombstones too! Rest in Peace !✝️❤️🇺🇸🥲
That intro is brilliant
Thank you.
If people had already turned to cannibalism during the famine, couldn't the prisoners who were ripped "limb from limb" and those who were "hunted down" by the black dog have simply been attacked and murdered by other cannibals?
Thanks Mr. Jones for putting together this amazing video, especially during this time of the year.
Glad you enjoyed it
I once spoke to a night security guard of an office building in the financial district of the City. It is in one of the narrow old streets.
He sat in reception and told me that when the offices were 100% empty except for him, he watched the lifts going up and down to different floors.
I said, weren't they programmed to do that, to keep them moving?
He said no, they were programmed to come down to the ground floor and not move if no one was using them.
I bought your book of ghost walks. Very interesting. It opens up a very different perspective on the city, and I love that. Anything that allows me to see things in a different way is most welcome, sir.
Nicely told, I do not think I would take one of your ghost tours as to quote one fellow I might make a mess of me pants lol Happy All Hallows Eve
That fellow's quote is one of my favourite's of all time!
Good video 📹
the ai voice thats used (if not ai then you have an impressive voice) sounds like the guild master from fable 1 and i love it so much
Impressive effort
Perfect for bedtime… hopefully I’m asleep before the ghastly goings on are revealed😅
Good night
Thank you
I would be very interested to hear the history of the clink in London, I visited quite a few years back and found it disturbing but wanting to know more about the dates it opened and closed, who it belonged to, ran it etc. I love watching your videos. Thank you.
My God, your voice is textbook 🐈👍
What a pleasure to listen to not only this exquisite narrator, but the stories!
Could you please do more stories unrelated to Jack the Ripper? I know JTR is your main subject, but he bores me to tears by now.
I listen to this particular video when I work -- over and over and over - because it is such a great compendium of non-Jack material along with that super voice of yours! More such videos would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your lovely comment. Yes, indeed, I plan to do more none JTR content, starting with a special one this Sunday.
Nice wholesome
Thank you.
Great video, I'm not far in yet but I really hope Not too many adverts please 🤞
I could listen to you read a grocery list. One of your many US fans……
Oohh, that might make a good video! The grocery list. Very kind of you to say so.
Could you cover West London, like Cecil Court and the Watkins Books, where Crowley supposedly left open doors to Hell? Great documentary, thanks!
I've actually got a copy of "Ghosts Vivisected", and it's one of the my favorite books!
"John has a soul, but on the whole,
The tombstone lies that says "Hic Jacet".
But if John truly has a soul, what sort of Thing is John, who has it?"
One of the names often mentioned in that book is a Lady Stanhope. I wonder if a certain Content Creator on TH-cam, who does such a superlative job of narrating Victorian ghost tales, is a relative! Yes, I know I ought to ask HIM, and I will!
There's been a few legless in ma pub as well
Imagine wanting to tear down a ancient church to build a tube Station!? It seems councilors have always been a special kind of dumb.
23:14 the ghost walked down the alley to the pub.
The story say's "The face of a Monk" What exactly does the face of a Monk look like?😂😂👌
👻👍
London is a ghost of itself.
There is nothing more scary than a headless pint
No one does ghost stories like the Brits❤
People who dont believe in ghosts have just never seen one.
Exactly. Only those who have never had ''an experience'' have the luxury of being sceptics and non-believers...
Ghosts just spirits not in hurry to get to heaven. They stick around to protect loved ones.
"Wot's the news from Lunnon, Lads?" -- Rudyard Kipling
I worked night shift 25 years in many so called haunted buildings i can confirm that ghosts are total bollocks.
That must have been a scary pair of things to be haunted by, Brian!
2 mins in and I'm already shitting mesel😱
