Elton John was a phenomenal talent. A child prodigy, an amazing performer, a superb musician, and a legendary song writer. For 31 years in a row, he had a song on the charts. Over 300 million records sold. Maybe the most talented pop artist ever.
What are you doing tonight Elton? I'm playing a historic gig at a formal concert hall in the Soviet Union. Oh cool! What are you gonna wear? Some slacks, an old purple jacket and a flat cap. What! Why? Because I'm Elton John... And I can.
He said in a recent interview the reason he had a much less flamboyant costume was because he knew the soviets partly wanted to use him as an example of "western decadence" so he stepped it back and still pushed to give the best show he could.
Actually guys, this is just how Russian folks took in events, very quiet and very serious. They watched hockey games in this very same manner, as if they were in a movie theater instead. During the 1972 Summit Series where the Soviet and Canadian national teams played 4 games in each country, the Russians were both shocked and appalled when some five thousand Canadian folks made the trip to Russia and then began cheering, roaring, and drinking/partying in their section of the arena. They simply weren't used to such behavior at live events.
wags2010 I remember in the film this is from Elton saying too, if anybody did get to their feet and start dancing a guard would go and push them back down into their seat again D:
The man, a piano and the talent with no boundaries - this is Sir Elton John!! Just can't believe this could happen in USSR in 1979.. i'm speechless... Thank you very much!!
Classic Elton John. I loved how his vocals were in the beginning of his career. His voice had a big range, was light and also a little hoarse at certain times. Of cause his voice changed a lot in the end of the 1980´s when he got his surgery on his vocal cords. But in the end it was important that he had it, because if he did not have the surgery, his career could not continue. I love and respect him a lot. :)
Wow! I never had seen this concert of Elton John. I am so impressed by his high level of virtuosity. Now I know why Elton is what he is!. This rocket man is an out-of-series guy.
Rocket Man!!!!!!!!!!! The Year I was born !!!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought 39 years later I would be singing it and playing it !!!!!!! Moline, IL. was so much fun !!!!!!!! I loved going with Hollie Jo Wheeler , Robert Gibson and my sister Cassie !!!!!!!! Can't wait for 10/26/18 at the United Center !!!!!!!! 8pm love them all so Much !!!!!!!!!!!
One of the rare things in the world that ignore fucking stupid political boundaries and quarrels. Things that bring joy, culture, and entertainment to everyone. You know, music. Between Vietnam and the Cold war I'm sure those people at the concert were glad they could have a day where they weren't stressing about total annihilation. Thank balls we all made it through that time alive. Gotta love Elton John and that buttery smooth music.
They probably weren't able to get the same experience at home depending how the climate then was (assuming stations like Radio Free Europe or the black market was their chance).
I'm hard-pressed to find another artist whether it's guitar piano solo or with a band that can take their music over a 40-year period sing it live and create a feeling that everyone can connect to and do it in a way that is so utterly amazing I know some of the all-time great some passed away some didn't last that long but I have to say that he is absolutely amazing even the modern-day Elton with the adjustments to The Voice it's a pleasure to hear him on TH-cam and to see him live
I just love as how he enters the second chorus, they add a slight echo to his voice. Just tiny things like that that make it much more fun and exciting rather than if it was just him. Not complaining, that would still be a tremendous concert, but small special effects definitely have an effect on the mood.
Have you listened to the whole version of this? It's actually over 7 minutes I don't know why this is clipped but in all the versions I found the video is shortened. The entire 7 minutes is incredible especially the extra 3 and a half minutes not seen here 😊
Goddamn, that's some fucking talent, right there. But, if someone was to start a rumor that Elton John and Ozzy Osborne are really brothers and the sons of Benny Hill, I think I'd buy it. The resemblance is uncanny.
Makes me Tear! I am going to tear and cry so bad ! because you are listening and watching and when you are there, it's a feeling of Greatness and who better to Capture and Create such greatness ! Elton Does ! I could Listen to Elton all day if given a chance I am truly a fan who loves his music
