  • Canadian Geese and other waterfowl are circling the skies getting ready for spring mating and nesting! In 2018 nesting season a pair of Canadian Geese called our lake their new home. Mother Goose tried her best with multiple nests and eggs but could not overcome nearby predators including raccoons, possum, coyotes, sandhill cranes, crows and even a bobcat! • Goose cam update BOBCA...
    Don't worry mom, we got you covered this year! Please come back!
    In part 1 Mrs. Kapper builds a sturdy cedar log floating platform using dead standing cedar from our woods and creates a welcoming tub to nest in. Perfect for a new mom!
    Part 2 coming soon - "The Location and Launch"! Don't miss it!
    Kapper Outdoors, living the dream one season at a time.

    I raised a Canadian goose. I was helping my uncle on his property sawing trees up that had fallen into his creek. I found a washed out nest. It had rained heavily earlier in the week. There were 3 eggs so I knew they hadn't set yet because it wasn't a full clutch. So it was ok that they were cold. We finished the day out and I went home and incubated them. 1 hatched and I had her for years with wings not clipped. She finally flew away last year after a batch of eggs she had didn't hatch. They would have been half farm goose half Canadian goose but it turns out the male was sterile. I think this caused her to finally leave, animals live to reproduce and pass on their genes. So it makes sense. Was a very cool experience though

    There she is, the Mrs. Good build for the geese. You might want to keep more. They are almost a pest here in Oklahoma. Too many stay year round, they make a mess of parks and golf courses. I and my friends would like to use a park without having to watch for goose pooh. Western red cedar is just as bad. Someone imported it into the state as a windbreak tree and they are allover too.

    Nice Job Mrs. Kapper, Joe going to loose his beach ❤️ to Goose droppings. Put a nest in pond I had dug out at a building I was in charge of building. The concrete patio, picnic tables and sidewalks for employee lunches got taken over by Geese and babies and droppings made it so covered in poop they could not use it anymore. Might have been because employees were feeding them. Was fun, but they invaded.

LOL... I do love your creations. I gots to say it again God has blessed you with a special gift/talent of taking dead things and giving them new life. Kind of like God did with me some years back...

    the biggest threat to the geese setting around our farm ponds is from eagles and hawks since they nest out on a tiny island away from foxes and coyotes. The geese are pretty good about setting their nests near shore brush to offer some protection from overhead predation but your floating nests would leave them open to attack. Last spring one setting goose and her mate had a nest more exposed than usual and she was taken; her mate ducked under brush and remained a widower the rest of the season. I have a love/hate relationship with the beautiful bald eagles.

    That's a nice raft. I wonder how long it will take to get so waterlogged it sinks completely, not to be a downer just that it will happen one day. Maybe take a measurement on it, so if you want to put some fish structure in using logs you can just tie it into the bank and leave it almost long enough before you pull it out to where you want it? Just an idea.

    • @CedarBluffRustics
      @CedarBluffRustics 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it lasts one season I'll be happy! We plan on an anchor and rope back to shore, so we'll keep an eye on it while it's out there and pull it on shore when they leave the nest.

    HONK
    I'm worried that just about any of the furry 4-legged predators around there will easily swim to the raft and climb aboard. 2nd concern - will the 10-inch high sides keep geese out .. or if they get in - will there be enough room for them to move around?

    • @CedarBluffRustics
      @CedarBluffRustics 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If this doesn't work we might try a pole next year. I researched several universities and conservation sites and that was the recommended height for the container. Guess we'll see if they know what they are talking about! :)

    Mrs Kapper I liked the idea of taking care of the geese but found the music was not of my liking. Do more videos but without the music. My hearing is not 100% and what I hear is not what someone else might hear. The sounds are not the same. Your music sounds like noise to me. Your voice is good. The sounds of nature are good. How will you keep the raft in one location?

    • @CedarBluffRustics
      @CedarBluffRustics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Glenn. Music is always a difficult one. We can add it at a level, save the video and it doesn't always come out like we liked it to. We also get feedback about too much silence in some videos so it's a balancing act.
      We will be finalizing plans on how to anchor/attach soon. Thanks for watching and the feedback!

    Are you in Canada or the upper reaches of the U. S.? cause if not all you are doing is reinforcing resident Goose nesting. And waterfowl biologists really frown on that. I got no issues with wood duck boxes, purple Martin houses, blue bird houses. Or even floating mallard tunnels. But Canada geese do not need to be made residential in the U. S. unless you are like in Maine or Minnesota.

    • @kapperoutdoors

      We have some that visit our pond at least 2 times each day. They are no bother & I think they enjoy the occasional easy meal they can get from what we put out for the ducks & geese that we raised. We have had up to 14 use it as a rest stop overnight while migration. But I wouldn't mind if they stayed, they could help ours be alerted of predators during the night.
