    Thanks Jeven / Kinotika. Nice round-up. I guess the bit rate has to drop when you go to 120fps or you're overwhelming the SD card write speed capacity, which probably explains the flat picture quality you're getting in super slow-mo. Got mine today 😎 Cheers, Ian in London.

    Did every reviewer miss this? "Limited 6-Month Warranty for Battery (< 400 Charge Cycles)" (from B&H's site)
    So for 1 charge per day, we get 400 days use which costs $525 CDN (13% taxes included) or $1.31 per charge/day and we throw it away? Or buy the accessories and buy another one after 13 months. My Sonys, Gopro, and Tracker all have replaceable batteries and years of use. guess this wasn't going to be mentioned for another 6 months. Love the unit but the math doesn't make sense and not 1 reviewer picked up on this...really!

    • @huyked
      @huyked 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nice catch!!! And that is one small battery! 875 mAh
      For myself, I'm thinking of using an external power bank. But that's just an unfortunate workaround once the battery dies (inevitably) and isn't replaceable. Good point you bring up! I hate companies that design in planned obsolescence. It's just greedy!

    • @robertdoucette1557
      @robertdoucette1557 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@huyked Yes I run my gear on battery packs, especially my Tascam Audio recorder where it bypasses the AA batteries automatically. But this Osmo Pocket most likely runs on the internal battery and the batt pack only keeps it topped up and in time when the batt gives up as they all do, will the internal batt allows a power feed from a batt pack? not likely. DJI might put a new battery in for the cost of a new camera. For the cost of this and accessories (bluetooth, audio jack, gimbal control, simple mount, etc.) I am looking at the Osmo Plus. Should be a lot of excellent used ones on the market soon.

    • @huyked
      @huyked 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robertdoucette1557
      That is a good point. I didn't think of that. I have the a7S II, and it requires the battery to be in it when I want to use a power bank with it. Hmm! Wow. That would not be good with the Osmo Pocket. The reason I would want the Pocket is because of it's teeny size (I already have the Ronin-S) and it's good tracking features. Regarding price, I just checked Amazon tonight, and I couldn't believe how low the price of the Crane-2 ($499, and the Focus Servo is included!), and the Ronin-S ($549) has become! Maybe this is just Christmas pricing, but still!

      @@altium7302 Yes I realize that. LOL...But in my 55 yrs, I bought 3 new trucks and a new motorcycle, all had a countdown timers till the warranty ended and within months had major breakdowns....Sorry...correction - the Japanese bike was fantastic with no problems but what i did to it., The early cell phones barely lasted 1 year (my first 3 in the 90's) then one lasted 8 yrs. Like all manufacturers, DJI tests their equipment extensively in the lab (cycle charges) and warrants based on risk assessment. Your device my get 1000 charges (still poor return- $0.53 per charge) but mine may only get 450. It's Russian Roulette for the consumer.

    Also just a note, FaceTrack doesn't work in 4K 60FPS and so your focus issue might have been for that reason, compare the two footage files to see whether they were in the same format. Also, if FaceTrack isn't on, you have to manually set the focus by tapping on your face on the screen, that could also be the issue.

    • @OutdoorsIQ

      @@OutdoorsIQ it's different, the autofocus is simply looking for things to focus on, it isn't actually "tracking" your face when in 4k 60fps, It's just luck if it does. It's different to when using FaceTrack where the focus IS actually locked on your face, as is the gimbal movement

    Question: When using the Pocket with a smartphone (Android Nexus 6P in my case) attached, how is the battery drain on the smartphone?
    My phone uses up battery pretty fast when running the camera. Does this happen when the phone is only running the app and the Pocket cam is filming? I imagine you use an iPhone and I expect the battery use would be similar.
    I know you can't make lots of measurements. I'm just wondering about your impression of this issue.

    It's odd that when face-tracking is on, it doesn't automatically focus on that face. The audio sounds better but it's still a bit tinny to me. Also, I find it hard to keep my fingers off the mics because it's so small. Do you have a recommendation for a wind screen or muff? The mics are so tiny and so close to other items on the osmo pocket I didn't see a way to adhere a muff. There are things this does so well, but several things that it either can't do or doesn't do well. Main issues are filming in low light and of course no zoom capability. Our vlogs are primarily travel vlogs with a lot of theme park vlogging - which means I'll continue to use the Canon G7X but also use this for the times it makes more sense. As you said it doesn't add much weight to your bag. Thanks for the great review!

    Great review.There are still many issues that firmware cannot fix. For example, the fixed internal battery is still a major issue if you are doing long shoots (i.e. travel). Also, there is no tripod thread on the bottom of the handle, which limits its expandability with multiple camera rigs, the LCD screen is fixed, which limits shooting flexibility, and there is no way to change lenses with different focal lengths. In addition, my personal preference to have an optional date/time stamp on the video would extremely helpful when filming documentaries is not available (btw, I have suggested this to GoPro for years without any success for implementation). As you said, the vlogging market has hardly been tapped by most major camera manufacturers, which is why the pain-in-the-butt workaround DIY rigs have been used by many people. The perfect all-in-one vlogging camera still does not exist, as far as I've seen. The Osmo Pocket is a step in the right direction, but no cigar, in my opinion.

      Bene C - Someone further down in the comments section here made a point that the battery in this thing is only good for 400 charges. So a person who uses this on a regular basis as their primary recording devise can expect this thing to be thrown in the trash in just 6 months. It has a non replaceable battery. DJI might offer a battery replacement plan but they’ll most likely make you pay for shipping both ways, and the fee for replacing the battery itself might cost as much as a new one.
      This is an amazing devise, but has one major flaw, a non replaceable battery. It’s ridiculous to spend almost $400 for it after tax and shipping just to chuck a perfectly good devise in the trash in just 6 months.

    What a fantastic looking product!! I think I need one! Great review Jeven. Nothing to do with your video but one thing that bugs me about new tech, is that companies throw gear out into the world before it's ready. So it shouldn't be 'awesome' that DJI updated the firmware and ironed out the bugs before release. It should be the NORM!! If we all stop accepting the shortfalls, shortcuts and shortcomings of tech manufacturers, then maybe they'll stop relying on the 'but it's new' excuse and give us properly tested and developed products from the off!

    Is there a lighting circle for focal point/lighting and a facial tracking square? I know with Fiimic Pro and DJI Osmo Gimbal you can choose the lighting/focal point and then facial tracking. That might be why you are out of focus but it's still tracking you.

    Why I’d love the pocket: I recently bought the osmo mobile 2 and took it on vacation. There is nothing more excruciating than having to mount the phone, switch on Bluetooth and wait for the device to pair and then balance, when you’re trying to get the last few minutes of a sunset. Totally impractical on a hike or on the beach as well, for the same reasons, as well as it being bulky and not waterproof. Impractical to keep everything setup and connected as it drains phone battery immensely. Something you can just pull out of your pocket, literally, would be perfect.

    Thanks for these videos, they’re really helpful.The following is just speculative as I don’t have a camera to play with (and you’ve probably expored this anyway but here goes).
    Is the focus point disassociated from the object tracking
    point and set wrong? Of course in selfie mode you’ll want the two to be linked but I was wondering is it’s been designed to have the object tracking and focus points separate so that, when pointing the other way, it’s possible to track one object (say a building in the distance) but still focus on objects between that point and the camera (imaging that you’re walking towards a particular building and want to keep that in the shot but you’re walking through a busy market street and want the activity of the market to be in focus then tracking the building may be better than lock mode as you will be moving side to side to avoid obstacles but the focus could still be on the market activity).

    Just entered the competition however each time I entered the competition site says zero entries 🤔 this would be n awesome accessory to my other photography equipment and I wouldn’t have to lug around a huge bag. Thanks for the videos, it’s people like you that help us amateur photographers develop more cheers and Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2019. 👍🏽

    I’m already looking forward to the Osmo pocket mkii with a 1” sensor, larger screen, in built 1/4” 20 mount, slightly larger body, mic input, headphone output and mini HDMI port! Can’t wait!,,

    Would you still take a gimbal for the GH5 when you travel with the Osmo pocket?

    Really enjoyed the video and your objective review on the device. I'm glad to see that DJI is being really responsive with firmware updates to fix the issues that the TH-cam crowd is finding. Seems that the early release in New York was to get it in the hands of the consumer base to work out the last few bugs that only get noticed by the people integrating it into their workflow.
    I was looking at the footage around 6:45 in this video, and it looks like the DJI is focused on your hat, rather than your face. Even though the device is locked on your face for tracking, the hat is adding some depth to the object being tracked (in this case your face), and maybe the DJI software is focusing on the closest point within the tracking frame...which would be the brim of your hat. Maybe try shooting some additional footage without the hat and see if you're able to replicate the Kinotika results (he wasn't wearing a hat, nor was Connor). I've recently learned that the Panasonic G9's firmware allows it to track multiple eyes in a scene, and the firmware decides to focus on the closest one. It's possible that the DJI firmware is doing something similar, but not necessarily tracking on a point as small as your eye.
    I may be wrong here, but since we're talking about a minimum focusing distance, those few inches may count.

    It would be great if filmic pro could integrate with the pocket as a camera you could select. I use false colour scopes all the time. Would also be sweet if there was a way to link the Smart Ambeo Headset to it for recording in stereo. maybe if there was a female lighting to male usb-c that supported audio as well as charge it might work but not found one yet.

      I’m talking about when testing out tracking. The peak causes the face to become lower in contrast and therefore more unreliable.

    If you look the footage carefully, you'll realize the auto-focus is doing the opposite it supposes to do: you'r face is blurred and the background is on focus. The algorithm seems to be quite buggy still as it worked fine with Dave.

    I saw some other reviews and was under the impression it's 'tap to focus', even on the small screen. Maybe tap your face and that'll work? I hope to get my hands on one soon.

    Jeven, would you mind tell me what software / version are you using to edit the footage of OSMO POCKET? Thanks.

  • @GrenlandUnderVann

    The sensor has a max read out speed of 60 FPS in 16:9 mode. So no surprises that the image detoriates at the higher frame rates. These frame rates depends upon pixel binning and line skipping. The same sensor goes to 240 frames in the GoPro which is even worse quality wise than the 100/120 FPS option. But still its better than no super slow motion.

    Jeven I wish you would have taken a piece of grey gel and taped it on the camera. When I get mine on Monday this will be the first thing that I do. With almost every DJI camera I've owned the lack of ND filter at launch caused weak image quality in bright sunlight. However the use of a gel in the interim on my Osmo, Air and MavPro allowed me to get to where I needed while I waited for Polar Pro.

    It's great they added the 1080p 120fps. But a question. Some of the pre-releases had that 120fps. Was it as punched in and cropped as it is now, or no crop before?
