On most of the Optiplex models I have worked with you can JUST fit in a 80mm fan to intake in the front (i super glue them in but you could probably use a drill to screw it in). Makes A LOT of difference on temps.
@@bengoodall5407 yeah I found that with the 5050 I am working on , I replaced the rear 80mm fan with a more powerful 100mm fan .. the 80mm fits perfectly beetween the drive bays , actually been a fun project for my sons 1st "gaming" pc

This is super helpful, I got my hands on a free pc from work that’s very similar to this and all the information will be very useful for my budget build
I regularly scout the e-waste bin at my work. My current rig is a i7 9700 that was pulled from the trash. Also found an HP workstation Zbook with 64gb ram. If you work at a factory, just ask.
You can eliminate the thermal throttling by controlling the fan speed manually by running the fan on 100% speed and removing the lid and that plastic cover.
Just wanna throw it out there, Rustoleum Epoxy Appliance paint is AMAZING for this type of thing. Most hardware stores carry it, and it’s only about $7 a can. It’s specifically made for painting sheet metal boxes…. lol
The correct move here is to keep only the processor and build the system around it with second hand components from marketplace/ ebay and a few cheap components
WX 4100 is a great little card for builds like this if you don't mind working around the 4 mini display ports and nothing else. They're a bit less powerful than the 6400, but more powerful than a gt 1030, and you can get one used with a low profile bracket for around $50. Really good for a capable but low end system.
I was peeping the internals and noticed that the top PCI-E slot was shorter, which yeah means less lanes and a bit of a performance drop, BUT it had a cut in it meaning it could probably take in a longer tongue. Meaning your gpu options could possibly fight that lane cut since you'd be able to do double slot LP GPUs. Maybe, though. Not entirely sure.
PCs like these could be a great sleeper build, the Dell Optiplex looks good, maybe you could try improving the airflow by drilling holes into the case and replace the CPU cooler with something like a stock Intel cooler from Facebook marketplace or eBay.
How entitled and self centred do you have to be to persistently ask and damn near beg for a free computer? What happened to the days of people working for what they have? Not just expecting handouts from the people that DO work really hard for not only what they have but what they create. Thank you for all the care and effort that goes into your videos and shorts, it doesn’t go unnoticed Zach!
You have to keep in mind that you won't see the age of those begging for a free PC. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't all kids in a situation where they can't just get a job.
I wonder how long before someone made an Oculink expansion card so you can hook up these kind of PCs to truly powerful GPUs via external GPU docks and go ham with it.
Definitely try to go for a mid tower used pc if you can find it. The limitations on sff builds really kill any performance per dollar. If you can manage to find a 6th gen or later i7, you can pair it with a rx 5700xt for around 150 bucks, the same cost as the 6400.
so long ago i use his old OEM build of the hp elite desk gen 2 to this day almost 3 years later im sitll running the ddr3 1050 TI SFF and the i5 6500 so yeah do i get no more then 70 fps in all games in low yes but i couldnt be more happy so thanks zach
The problem with saying that the RX 6400 only loses about 15% performance in a Gen3 slot doesn't really give you an idea of how bad running one in a Gen3 slot can be. Just look at some of the frame rate consistency in your own testing. That's because the RX 6400 just had too many corners cut. Too few PCIe lanes, the constricted memory bus and only having 4GB of RAM are the issue... and it has issues even in a Gen4 slot. Gen3 just compounds those issues since you're now cutting the bandwidth in half. This leads to not just a loss in average frame rate, but more importantly, frame rate consistency. It's not so much an issue with bottlnecking the GPU itself, it's that you're seriously bottlenecking the communication between the video memory and anything that needs to access it. That's not to say it has problems in every game, but it's certainly a minefield I'd rather tell people to avoid. Especially when you don't even have to stick to a single slot card in these systems... at least the 50 and 70 class Optiplex SFF.
@@JordanSayers-u7y Ideally, if you're willing to spend around $200, the Yeston single slot 3050 6GB... or you can save about $20 - $30 on a dual slot model and run them in them in the x4 slot next to the CPU if you have an xx50 or xx70 model, but being limited to 4 PCIe lanes will come at a performance loss and can impact the frame rate consistency as well, but it's going to be less severe because the 3050 has a wider memory bus and more VRAM than the 6400. If you're wanting to spend between $100 - $125, the 1650 is your next best option, just make sure to get the GDDR6 model as they're about 10% faster than the GDDR5 model and they really don't cost more. It will be slower than the RX 6400, at least in my testing so far. Being in the x4 slot means that it can run into similar issues as the RX 6400, they're just much less severe since the 1650 has a 128-bit bus. There are single slot models as well, but I always see them for around $200, and at that price just get the 3050 6GB. It will wipe the floor with anything else outside of the 4060 LP. If you have an xx30 class system, then you're limited to a single slot GPU regardless... without other changes. You can swap the power supply with a Flex ATX power supply and that will give you the room to run a dual slot GPU in the x16 slot, but you will need a 24-pin to 6-pin adapter for the main power, I suggest the ModDIY adapter, and you will need to make some modifications to the chassis as well. This also works for the xx50 and xx70 class systems. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cons to adding a gaming GPU to SFF Optiplex systems, which is why I push people to the HP Z workstations, up to the Z2 G4, because there really aren't any compromises. However, if you have the Optiplex already, those are your best options. And I do want to say that the RX 6400's performance is pretty good and you can avoid these issues if you can back the settings of to reduce your VRAM allocation. The only times I've had these issues is when the GPU is allocating around the VRAM limit, then I back off the settings, and it performs really well. I just felt that he needed to add context if he was going to suggest it.

I'm currently specing out a sim racing set up for F124, Beamng, and Assetto Corsa. Could you build an around $1000 PC for the best performance on those games that you can get for that budget?
That PCIE x4 slot will take a double width gpu. You do lose a bit, but likely similar as using gen 4 card in gen 3 slot. A gtx 1650 would pair well or rtx 3050 lp
Does the PSU come with any PCI-E cables? If it does I would've tried to mod the case and use a PCI-E riser cable on top of the PSU. Add a intake fan in the front. Replaced the stock cooler and add extra ventilation holes in the top over the CPU socket. This modded case looks way to good not o try to max out this PC.
