- Weird History Food is going to pick up the check on this one with some Chain Restaurant Facts. There's a certain level of comfort when diners walk into a popular American food chain. No matter where patrons travel throughout the US, they know that entering a chain restaurant titan will provide them with the same menu, food, and service they experience back home. Establishments like Olive Garden, Waffle House, Applebee's, T.G.I. Friday's, Outback Steakhouse, and others take pride in providing diners with consistent atmospheres no matter where life takes them.

I wish people could see behind the scenes of Panera Bread. They don't make their bakery items onsite, at least not all. The soups and macs are microwaved and heated straight out of a bag. Starbucks breakfast sandwiches are basically 7/11 premade heat and eat sandwiches... but I'm talking about American 7/11's (if you know you know).

As someone who worked at Panera bread, I can speak to this, at least a little. The vast majority of the baked goods are made onsite. The only one not baked at the restaurant that I can remember are the coffee cakes.
While the Mac and cheese is sometimes microwaved, usually it and the soups are warmed in large hot water baths. We only microwave the Mac when no one has had time to throw some in the water bath to heat up.
All veggies are prepared in the back, so they cut and mix salads and such from fresh veggies.
Panera definitely has some issues, but as far as restaurants that I've worked at go, I still eat there occasionally.

I worked at a cracker barrel most of the shit came in proportioned bags too. Then heated in water. Except the the meat & chicken was cooked there

The fact that Denny's was originally a donut shop called Danny's is what surprised me.
Dennys at 4am is like going to the zoo always something interesting and animalistic
Me and a couple friends went to one at about 3 AM sometime in 2000, tripping on acid and what really did it was our server legit had long vampire fangs. The food hit the spot though and it was quite the ambience for a few 20 something dudes tripping balls. 10/10 definitely recommend.
Ihop has gone down hill. Nowadays i walk in and the place is empty and with one employee who hides in the kitchen or bathroom.
I don't care for ihop. Dennys has always been good especially at truck stops. Ryan's was the $#!+ in my town and Golden Corral came in but it ruined everything. I went to the Golden Corral a few years and only one item was more than semi warm. Screw GC

I haven’t been to ihop in over a decade. The last time I was going to go, I was college kid and it was late at night. I decided not to go and that turned out to potentially save my life because that IHOP got shot up that evening.
@5:37 - Managers that are selected to go to Italy to Olive Garden school is really there for an abridge version of cooking. It is not like they’re in classes the entire time there. It’s more of a paid vacation with a few hours of classes mixed in. It’s all a marketing ploy.
You forgot to mention that Waffle House has its own record label and music.

The founder of TGIF created the company specifically so that HE could pick up single girls.
I used to work st a TGIF and there was a creepy manager that used to flirt with the underage hostesses 😂😂

Outback used to be awesome.
Their deep fried mushrooms were my fav app.
Unfortunately they became so expensive it's unaffordable to eat there.
Personally, I remember it always being expensive.. and ironically is cheaper with all the grubhub coupons and shit if you live close to one now, but not without.
The portions are so small!
Around 2021, we went to edgewater nj outback for lunch during the week. They gave me a huge portion of fried mushrooms. Maybe it was $8.99
From 1995 to 2000, I delivered food to National Chain restaurants. One was Red Lobster. 1999 or 2000 they had a AYCE crab leg promo. I was sent from L.A. to Las Vegas with 45’ trailer FULL OF CRAB LEGS! The stores COULD NOT refuse their order. One store in San Bernardino Ca. ordered more boxes than their freezer could hold. I left them to figure out what to do with all of them…
By far, my favorite segment was Outback: Paul Hogan was labeled a "knife expert" and you name-dropped Yahoo Serious. You have given me a good morning.

The Denny's segment reminded me of when they bought out Jojo's and converted most of them. The Jojo's down the street from me made fresh rolls and breads (SO good!), and they served up a chicken noodle soup that, to this day, was the best I've ever eaten.
RIP, Jojo's, you ARE missed....
I worked for jojos many years. The quality of their food was impressive. Dennys could not hold a candle to them.

Born and raised in Joplin Missouri here, I honestly heard about the Waffle House Index about 5 years before the tornado. It's interesting to know it wasn't an official thing before then. Still learning things about the day almost 13 years later

They made a company wide corporate decision to use cheaper, thicker, blander sauce at all locations. I used to love it years ago but every location I go to in northern Illinois is gross

Went to a TGIF once and had to wait an hour and a half to be seated. And there were emty tables all over in there .
That was the first and only time ever went there. Won't go back to one if they are still around.

I dont go to olive garden after 3 different times and states. I grew up with better Italian food in nyc.
Never been to waffle house. Cant recall if i went to cheesecake factory.
Been to dennys in early 2000s maybe twice. Ihop ive been to a few times since i was a child.
I was to Applebee's a few times in late 1990s.
I went to outback with my parents around 2004, and one time in 2021.
The few times i went to Starbucks, i had a gift card. I was at red lobster a few times with my family. The last time was 2005.
TGIFridays and houihans we went to several times in hs and college.
I like to cook and bake. We dont go out to eat much.

The worst meal we were ever served was Red Lobster.
It was our 15th anniversary and everything was terrible.
Crab legs that bent. Scampi was rubbery. Salad was wilted with bad dressing. The dressing was watery mayonnaise. Not ceaser.
100$. Never been back. That was 10 yrs ago. We complained and nothing was done.

sadly TGI Fridays is not what it use to be. went there last week with my dad, use to go there all the time when I was a kid with my dad.

For the Olive Garden one it’s an odd thing to harp on “guys they’re not locked in the kitchen for a work straight so does it Reeeeassllly count?”
What?
It's not about being locked in a kitchen. It's about whether there's any serious attempts at structured education going on. And the reality is that Olive Garden can't afford to do such a thing, despite the positive PR. If you go to an Olive Garden and look at the plate brought to you, you'll notice that the sauces are spooned on top of the pasta. That's a very American method, but will absolutely get you run out of town in Italy. Italians want their pasta and sauce married together properly!
Why is that a problem? Because taking the time to marry the sauce and pasta in a pan would greatly increase the prep time on Olive Garden dishes. OG wants to achieve "good enough" in a highly structured, hard to mess up fashion that ensures maximum throughput over product quality.
For what they're trying to achieve, a "Hamburger U" type of setting that teaches management techniques would be a more effective approach. But it lacks the PR advantages, so instead they send their managers on all expenses paid vacations with a few fun cooking workshops thrown in.
