  • Our first of a torture test series!
In this video, we're testing single wall corrugated, double wall corrugated, and schedule 40 PVC. We lay them in a 5.5" deep trench and run them over 4 times with an f-350.
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24

I love your opening line, thanks for being bold and putting that in your videos. I used to have a similar saying on the wall in my Vacuum Sales/Repair shop back when I owned it (25 years).
When you mentioned the shallow trench and people not knowing what they are doing - what's the desired depth for a 4 in pipe? Everyone I talked to or watched said 6 inches was the depth for a 4 in..is that not enough? I am about to DIY a drainage project and want to get it right the first time.
What I gathered out of this though is that single one corrugated is perfectly fine for uses where there's no traffic or just light walking traffic, especially if installed right. I was originally going to use PVC but thinking I am going to use corrugated now. Except I will get the one at Tractor Supply and not the HD/Lowes one as I hear it's stronger.

PVC is strong but brittle. Double wall is strong and is able to flex.

Great video. Thanks. I am going with single wall perforated - I know it was tested but my will be deeper than this.

What are you building? French drain? Or normal drain?

Nice video. My guess is that the corrugated pipe will last longer and the cost is about 20% of the cost of the PVC. I installed a down spout drainage system recently and I was shocked by the cost of a 10 foot section of PVC. I was a little worried about just using corrugated pipe since most professionals were saying to use PVC, but I was laying about 70 feet of pipe and PVC was just too expensive. As a test while laying the corrugated pipe, I stepped on the pipe while it was in the trench uncovered, the pipe didn't seem to know I was there. The strength of it was actually pretty amazing. Also, I have seen a few videos about the ribs in the corrugated pipe causing turbulence in the pipe which helps to keep it clear of debris. So far I am happy with my setup.

The cost of the PVC is nothing compared to the damage a clogged corrugated pipe could cause. It's very rare a corrugated is driven over. This demonstration doesn't show when the temperature is down around zero when the pipe can crack more easily. Many other downsides to corrugated such as poor connections which roots use to get to the water that remains in the ridges. This demonstration is only a portion of the tests needed to compare the various pipes fairly.

You get what you pay for

@@joeshmoe7789 I live in Florida, highly unlikely that the ground is going to freeze. I have had tractors holding huge tree stumps drive over the pipe, it stills holds water. And PVC is notorious for allowing tree roots to invade the sewer line, but even if the corrugated did get clogged at a joint, you could always dig it up. On a plus side, the pipe comes in very long sections, so you might not even need a connection.

@@LaFox23 And sometimes you pay way more than what you get, if paying four to five times what it could be done for is good with you, go for it.

@@carlkma2037 If you're connecting multiple sources to a main pipe, you'll have connections. Schedule 40 PVC pipe connections that are glued properly are stronger than the pipe itself. Try breaking a connection, the pipe breaks. The connections become welded.
