  • In this video we provide helpful tips and design methods to building a residential drainage system out of the black corrugated pipe that is commonly purchased at the big box stores. We always recommend using the right material for the job but understand that some Diyers want a budget friendly and easy to work with pipe therefore we hope this video can help you build a system with better chances of success.

    I recently had to redo a section,fairly flat,...even though i had taped the joints well ,maple tree roots got past the tape ,so if i were using corrugated black again id tape like double or triple the amounts shown,now ive switched to 4in pvc,tried to get more slope,not as much as is prefer,but should keep the patio and wall from backing up and flooding,the home i even bored thru the street curb ,under sidewalk waiting for big rain to test the flow, it has gutter and channel drain ,tied into it straight line about 100ft😊,..ive had the swale,or belly you discussed, from the pipe floating before the ground filled in and compacted over it,which i knew was problematic, another reason i switched to the pvc,thanks for the great video on this topic😊

    Very educational video. Everything I needed to know on detail. I just did a 60ft tile job and after this information, I made sure I didn't make any additional joints that were unnecessary for tree root invasion. I dug my wye back up and tile taped everything. Also tile taped the Conections at the pop up. Question, I. Made sure I installed a nice bed of gravel underneath and around my pop up emitter hole. About 6 inches under and all around with gravel for the weep hole to leach water out of the system. Will the gravel bed keep the weep hole safe from root invasion. I just used a gravel bed. No fabric. Have you ever seen a pop up that was invaded with root through the small weep hole at bottom of pop up emitter?

      @@AaronWalske Depends if it’s in close proximity to a tree or shrub but yes I have seen roots grow in the pop up weep hole. I wouldn’t sweat it, just keep an eye on it when you do your yearly system maintenance.

    It's a shame that you can't get the FDM pipe locally. The shipping expense on it, in my case as an example, would exceed the price of my entire project. I may simply go for PVC, but I am hoping to find a compromise since the corrugated material is ideal if it doesn't get crushed in the process without all the joints.

      @@whattheschmidt Since I wouldn't be digging more than a few inches down (just enough for grass to take root again) it will freeze for sure. It stays below 32 sometimes for weeks at a time in colder winters. PVC or triple wall PVC would have been most ideal otherwise.

    • @SheilaSpencer1
      @SheilaSpencer1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm no expert, but I think I would. If there were anything that ever grew in that space or even next to it, there are still roots in the ground trying to survive.
      Especially knowing that it's going to be covered in concrete and harder to get to if you ever have problems.
      Could be overkill, but I would. 🤷‍♀

    Hello, I'm grateful for educating me on the different pipes out there.
    I'm going to install a system for ground air transfer into my home. It's about 100' both ways, 6'-8' in the ground and what type of pipe would you recommend? It will be a loop system that will heat and cool my home. I live in Nevada about 25 miles east of Reno. It gets hot 🔥🔥🔥 in summer and cold in the winter. Frost level is 2' deep. Can you recommend a pipe for the application?
    Thanks,

    You said in the video that you need to have a proper slope on the pipe but I did not hear anything about what that slope should be. I know in plumbing its a 1/4 inch per foot + or - 1/8". Is it the same for a corrugated pipe or does it need more of a slope?

    • @StormWaterDrainageSolutions
      @StormWaterDrainageSolutions  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MulaBellaSisters-fu2vh Good question, it’s ideal to have at least 6inch of dirt over this type of pipe. But if you can do more than that’s even better. With yard drainage it’s tough to say an exact amount because all yards are different and the ground varies greatly.

    Currently looking for an alternative to the big box stores version and can’t afford FDMs freight cost what’s a good way to decipher weather it’s a quality corrugated pipe for example should I be able to step on it without it crushing?

      @@Goose868 It will feel stronger and the pipe wall will be thicker. Also the ridges will look a little different. Any pipe that says heavy duty on it will be of better quality. • @oil_can
    @oil_can 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Seems like a catch-22 when installing any pipe with holes into a trench:
    If you put gravel under the pipe, you’ll create the air gap needed to prevent roots but water will pool in that gap and attract roots.
    Conversely, if you lay the pipe directly on the soil, there will be no air gap to prevent roots, allowing them to freely grow into the pipes.
    What’s the solution?

    • @matthewgiesselmann6188
      @matthewgiesselmann6188 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any water beneath the pipe in the rock should be able to leach into the soil beneath. I think he meant that that would not work with the packing peanuts not due to the space they create as much as the absorbent quality of them or the material holding them in may prevent the water from leaching properly into the soil.

    • @eckdavid2472

      I've been trying to figure this one out as well. Most people seem to recommend leaving an inch or so of rocks under the pipe to keep the slits in the pipe open, but others say it's not necessary. My impression in that in this video (at minute 20:15) he doesn't recommend leaving a space under the pipe. He says, "For best results, dig the trench, line it with a good geotextile, PUT THE PIPE AT THE BOTTOM, fill it with stone, stitch it up."
