  • We believe that a deity is in the portable Shinto shrine called Mikoshi. When a deity is transported from a main shrine to a new shrine or during a festival, we use Mikoshi that is similar construction to the main shrine.
For the first time this year, a parade at Yasaka Shrine was held with celebratory lanterns.

Thank you for your comment and interest in the culture! This lantern is a reproduction of the tradition of the 1600s. They are called celebration lanterns. Lanterns are made from things that are familiar and considered to be auspicious😊

@@pironhafish thank you for answering! Very interesting. So, if I may ask, the fishes lanterns are auspicious for the fishing? And the babies one is for protecting the children? What is the meaning for the lone sandal? It is a beautiful tradition. Are they made of paper? They seems very detailed and I suppose they are made by master artisans.

I don't know the exact details, but I think the fish lanterns are for wishing for a successful fishing trip, and the baby lanterns are for praying for the blessing of children. And yes, they are made of paper. It is very delicate and made one by one by master artisans!
