Man Ubel is definitely going to be one of my favorite characters. I absolutely love mages in games I play and shows I watch but very particularly I LOVE the concept and style of battle mage type characters/units where its not just about casting crazy spells but incorporating that magic into your own physical combat fighting is so COOL!
Wasn't that Denken who explained the "dungeons of the unified era" or however he called them? I can't remember that Sense also explained it but I am not sure.
When you have to pretend to be "just another student taking your physics exam" for a crazy legal situation (you forgot to update the last 5 credits on your degree back when you were studying 1000 years ago), but you are also the professor providing the exam, and you already have 2 Nobel prizes in physics.
Gotta appreciate how truly strong Fern and Frieren are. Consider the fight between the two guys and Senses' clone. They are still amongst the better human mages alive but they create a full dome of defensive magic something we are told earlier in the series is very draining on mana. While Frieren and Fern can make small shields to only block where the attack is and not waste mana. If anything it really shows humans have been enjoying the peaceful era enough that their defences arent as honed as our favourite duo.
On the other hand, it also shows how dangerous Sense's attacks are. If they don't do a full coverage, some strands of hair can slip through the defense and reach them. I think that in a scenario that Fern or Frieren are fighting against Sense but they can only protect, I don't think either could afford to use partial coverage to defend
One thing to keep in mind is no-one knows how old Frieren is. They only know her as the mage who killed the Demon King 80 years ago. Previous to that she ensured she "didn't leave her name in history", so most people think she is probably just over 100, maybe 200 max, so keep grossly underestimating her.
Also doesn't help Frieren constantly suppresses her mana. Something that is anathema to mages who like to show off their mana as its evidence of how much they've trained and grown. So Frieren even when suppressing appears around the same level as skilled mages of the current era.
I find Frieren's immunity to paralysis and hypnosis so funny because it reminds me of how bosses in JRPGs always seem to be immune to most or all status effects so that you can't cheese the boss fight.
Übels voice actress is Ikumi Hasegawa, she's also known for voicing Vladilena from 86, as well as Kita from Bocchi the Rock. She's also the lead singer of Kessoku band, a band that came from Bocchi the Rock and is now a real one. Spiegel is the german word for mirror. It's pronounced like Shpee - ghel. An "ie" in german is pronounced like a long "e" in english.
More precisely when and e and i are put together in german base words the second one is a hard version of the letter. so ei is pronounced like a capitol I, and ie is pronounced like a capitol E.
I could literally spending hours listening to you talk about this show and this episode. So many characters this episode - land, ubel, methode, edel, sense, ehre, and wirbel all got moments to see their character. Thank you for reacting - i cant wait to hear more of your thoughts!
I don't think Ubel is just trying to learn Land's clone spell--she follows him around all the time because she *likes* him. Land, on the other hand, does not seem super-enthused by the prospect of being the object of a psychopath's affection.
It's because Land just gives her nothing to go off of and isn't scared of her. Which not only means that she has trouble empathizing with him but also makes her more and more obsessed with him since she likes a challenge. If Land was the kind of guy who'd be enthused by the prospect of being the object of Ubel's affection then, funnily enough, I think Ubel wouldn't be interested in him.
protip: when ya get a new name, google translate it and use the speech option to get the german pronunciation. Don't worry bout spoilers; the only one that's a spoiler was Lugner, which means "liar" (though honestly that's not even much of a spoiler LOL)
Empathy usually has the connotation of including sympathy, but Ubel is a good example of expressing empathy without sympathy. She is looking for how people operate/tick, what their thought process is behind decisions and why/how they use their magic. Her empathy would give her no qualms about killing that person if it incurred some advantage to her. This anime also has a better understanding of Artificial Intelligence than virtually any SciFi movie/show that I've ever seen. They usually ask the question of what make a human/soul, or just make robots exactly like humans, but forget the fact that in reality, Artificial Intelligence has no mind, it simply mimics the effects of one. It is improving on the mimicry, but that doesn't change the underlying fact that they have no mind.
The interesting part of her character is this psychopath has to learn to empathize with a person to use their magic and we don't see her kill the one person that she seems to have empathized with and she seems to have to learn to "like" Land in order to use his ability. Id argue that once she copies a persons magic she would be incapable of killing them unless she "had" to.
@@edgeelric4245 I've yet to see any indication that she "likes" anyone she's copied or that it would be more difficult to kill those she's copied, because it simply hasn't been explored yet. There's currently no way to know the author's intent at the moment, unless there's an interview hiding out there somewhere that clarifies it outside of the story itself, or it's revealed in the original source material that hasn't been adapted yet. Whenever she's used words like "like," I've always gotten the impression that it's out of fascination of the unknown, not endearment.
In fact, it is very interesting that Ubel, who showed himself even at Wirbel's coldest moment, needs to truly feel empathy for his opponents in order to copy their spells. She's a faciante and a teller, the coldest killer so far needs to feel close to people to be able to use her magic. It was really cute to see Fern jealous of Frieren. I think that in fact bringing together mages to defeat dark Frieren is the best strategy to cover the difference in mana, it makes a lot of sense with the issue of power balance. Although I imagine it was just a matter of throwing a mime in there and waiting, the dark Frieren would be easily defeated.
Übel is a dark reflection of Frieren. Her motivations to understand people is to gain more power, which is also what she seems to see magic as. She loses interest in Fern when Fern doesn't display or profess to knowing any magic she is interested in. She wants to know more about Land because of how powerful his signature spell is. She's such a dark reflection of Frieren.
it also seems Fern has an uncanny affinity for defensive magics, her exponentially creating more and more constructs of defensive magic makes her wildly powerful. Fern lasted so long with ease against a high level blood demon.
The Spiegel, while being a monstrous object of a bygone era, strikes me as more of an artifact than other monsters we've seen. I think it is meant to be akin to the dungeon heart/core concept, but in whatever insanely advanced ancient magical era it comes from, the Spiegel seems like a magical computer to me. A warding system which obviously handles security, but I also wonder about the automated maintenance that has kept this dungeon in good repair throughout its history. Witness all those magical candles forever burning everywhere. Another sign of magical maintenance being pristine stonework despite the ruinous kinds of battle magic which prior failed entrants to this dungeon would likely also have employed. No rubble piles.
Ubel's feral grin at 9.30 is soo damn hot Damn! Gotta love her, also the sentence " i created a situation where my death would be your fault" is insane, she just gambled her life away like that. So crazy in a good way. On a side note, Frieren, Methode and Fern interaction was so cute and wholesome, also of the best "Ara Ara" in anime history 🤣
We should not think about how the kids of Land and Übel would be like xD You can rly see that the middle Wall is thicker than the other right and left, when they found out about the passage. The Mural is probably over 1000 years old or older. Methode with the best ~ara ara.
Ubel and Land will be married, with several children, and Land will ask her if she is able to empathize with him yet; "Not quite yet, four-eyes, I think it'll take a little bit longer."
the dungeonlords name 'spiegel' means mirror, the monster in the forest was 'einsam, which means lonley and try saying it like spie like sh and be ... shbe... and gel like well
This is strictly me throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks, but... Ubel is a sociopath, I think. And sociopaths, from what I've heard, will study normal people's behavior in order to fit in with society. So, is her ability to copy other's magic a in universe idea of that type of thing? Instead of copying people's ability to function in society, she's copying their spells?
sorry for the huge message. Really, but once I have proof that you, Flexie, pay much more attention than many I've seen react, I've even seen some people complain about the fights in which Fern participates as if it were too easy, especially in the manga, without meaning to. Some spoilers, unlike other characters, but many forget several details shown throughout the story, she is the youngest of the third class, she already had the talent to hide her mana before meeting Frieren, she received the same training that Frieren received from Flamme, which she received from Sieren, to increase and suppress her mana and unlike Frieren, Fern was not lazy during her training, if we look at the first episodes we will see that Frieren's mana stopped before meeting Flamme changed, but it didn't changed so much to the present day, she grew, but she could have grown more, that's what I believe, when Frieren read Aura's mana the guillotine, she calculated her lifespan with precision, Aura did the same, so it is safe to say that mana grows gradually in living beings and works as a kind of carbon dating, or fingerprint, the mana that Flamme possessed was superior to that of the Aura, of a five hundred year old demon, if Frieren had focused her training on this aspect as well as Flamme who should already have a naturally large mana, but with Sieren's training it became monstrous, imagine the true size of Fern's mana? I don't believe she's as big as Flamme, especially because Fern lost her motivation in training, at least to dedicate herself as much as before, but she must have more than Deken.
Ubel is german for 'evil', or 'sickening'. Like the gross feeling in your stomach you get when you feel like something's wrong. The mangaka giving her that name is basically their way of just screaming to the audience "Hey, this chick is _really bad news_ "
Methode is te older woman Sein was wishing for.
Sein literally the guy giving up on diamond meme xD
Those two need to wind up together, in Season Two. This MUST happen!
Frieren finding all these hidden doors is a reference to older DnD where elves got free checks to notice hidden doors just by walking past them.
Übel probably gonna need like 3 of his kids and another 30 years of marriage to be able to perfectly empathized with Land
I just imagine her living a whole life with him and then he just disapears at the end and the kids too.
@@eclips_total2215then Ubel too as she empathized with him years ago.
@@eclips_total2215 He probably went out to buy milk

Frieren being the final boss of the exam is hilarious
Its such a smart way of projecting the power of a timid OP main character
And Denken, upon seeing Clone Frieren, immediately (albeit calmly) shits his britches. lol

All the paths converge to that final room. Sense explained it at the start of the test.

This is in fact the nightmare that we all have from time to time of needing to go back to HS because there was a mistake with one of our marks.
Its funny how many early D&D elf traits frieren demonstrates here: she detects the hidden door and she is immune to paralysis
It's almost like the creator of this show has dabbled in the hobby a few times himself...

Kinda wondering with the mixing of r and l in Japanese if Ubel is supposed to be Uber as in Ubermensch.
Nah, Übel is correct. She's bad, so she's called Übel. All of the german names are accurate and don't have the r-l switch.
Ubel is german for 'evil', or 'sickening'. Like the gross feeling in your stomach you get when you feel like something's wrong. The mangaka giving her that name is basically their way of just screaming to the audience "Hey, this chick is _really bad news_ "
Okay yeah that makes sense my knowledge of German is limited and rl swap is a common mistake. Yet getting better in recent years.
pronounce it like it was written "shpeegel", that should get you near the right pronounciation :)
