I believe in the manga most villains rarely lasted beyond a single encounter with the Senshi, so there wasn't much time to see their personalities... let alone backstabbing each other (Witches 5). Conversely, let's see Mamoru doing more than throwing roses (apparently in the manga he was a bit of a swordsman, as well as having a healing ability that's only shown once in the anime) and Chibiusa with some decent attacks (rather than merely comic relief distractions).

However, when they dubbed the anime for release in America, they made them cousins as opposed to lesbians because they thought it was too taboo for younger audiences to see that kind of relationship between two people of the same sex. So, it was basically just a cultural thing. The Japanese are much more open to those kinds of relationships than other cultures.
Hello from Italy. In our version they fakely are "very close friends", but despite all distortions and cuts the censorship could not 100% hide that they are a couple. We were not that stupid. Same thing for the Starlights: in our version the three men are magically "replaced" by their "twin sisters" in the fight scenes. Ridiculous, isn't it? Fortunately, today this problem no longer exists. But in general, about animes of the past, it is not always easy to regain the original stuff in its complete version or in a decent redubbed one.

Additionally, they did want to portray them as a couple, and Barbara claims Sarah wanted to give Haruka/Amara a ''non-binary'' approach. So knowing what we know now, I think the ''cousins'' retcon was weird, but please be aware that the VAs respected that they were indeed a gay couple and wanted to honor that through their performance :)
The cousin theory came from a failed censorship attempt in certain dubs because people didn't think that the children watching could understand the concept of two people loving each other regardless of gender. Instead of portraying them as lovers, some people thought that they could play off their affections as purely familial. I say failed attempt because, well, I wasn't an overly observant kid and I remember watching this show and thinking "Oh, those two are in love? Cool." If anything, their attempts to censor the relationship just made things worse, because they didn't simply come across as lesbians, but incestuous as well -_-' Every fool has their folly, though

AnimexCartoonKIA At least part of the reason the new version will be closer to the manga is because the manga exists - the original anime was created simultaneously with the manga, so apart from sharing overall plot elements, each developed along different lines.
However, one original anime feature I'd like retained is the concept of the main villains being more commanders (albeit of identikit mooks rather than themed Monsters Of The Week), reluctant to take a hands-on approach, so allowing character development. I believe in the manga most villains rarely lasted beyond a single encounter with the Senshi, so there wasn't much time to see their personalities... let alone backstabbing each other (Witches 5).
Conversely, let's see Mamoru doing more than throwing roses (apparently in the manga he was a bit of a swordsman, as well as having a healing ability that's only shown once in the anime) and Chibiusa with some decent attacks (rather than merely comic relief distractions).

I think it's so funny that the American dubbers tried to cover up the fact that they were lesbians by saying that they were cousins, and really just creating incestuous lesbians. Even as a kid, thinking they were cousins, I also picked up on them being a couple, and it was AWKWARD!

Haruka and Michiru were lovers in the manga and in the anime in Japan. However, when they dubbed the anime for release in America, they made them cousins as opposed to lesbians because they thought it was too taboo for younger audiences to see that kind of relationship between two people of the same sex. So, it was basically just a cultural thing. The Japanese are much more open to those kinds of relationships than other cultures.

Hello from Italy. In our version they fakely are "very close friends", but despite all distortions and cuts the censorship could not 100% hide that they are a couple. We were not that stupid. Same thing for the Starlights: in our version the three men are magically "replaced" by their "twin sisters" in the fight scenes. Ridiculous, isn't it? Fortunately, today this problem no longer exists. But in general, about animes of the past, it is not always easy to regain the original stuff in its complete version or in a decent redubbed one.

The reason so many people think they're cousins is because it was covered up in the American version to hide the lesbianism. It was too hard to take out the flirting so it was left in, leading people to infer that the relationship was incestuous.

Barbara Radecki (English Va of Neptune) said in a recent interview with ChrisMayek on TH-cam that her and Sarah Lafleur (Uranus) were aware that they were indeed a gay couple and actually recorded their lines together. Additionally, they did want to portray them as a couple, and Barbara claims Sarah wanted to give Haruka/Amara a ''non-binary'' approach. So knowing what we know now, I think the ''cousins'' retcon was weird, but please be aware that the VAs respected that they were indeed a gay couple and wanted to honor that through their performance :)

The cousin theory came from a failed censorship attempt in certain dubs because people didn't think that the children watching could understand the concept of two people loving each other regardless of gender. Instead of portraying them as lovers, some people thought that they could play off their affections as purely familial. I say failed attempt because, well, I wasn't an overly observant kid and I remember watching this show and thinking "Oh, those two are in love? Cool." If anything, their attempts to censor the relationship just made things worse, because they didn't simply come across as lesbians, but incestuous as well -_-' Every fool has their folly, though

See, I live in America and I used to watch this show religiously. I never bought the whole cousins thing so when I found out that they're originally lovers I wasn't very shocked. I've always thought there was nothing wrong with gay people so thank you, Sailor Moon. :)
@GargLassie Rei Hino is straight in the anime, but in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, she gets to be very close to Minako Aino. Many of their interactions can be interpreted as like those of lovers, and they seem to make up for the absence of Uranus and Neptune in the anime with their relationship.

@GargLassie This relationship can be considered fanon, but many fans argue that the only reason it is not canon is because it was a children's show, hence the subtleties and ambiguities (e.g. trivial behaviors, special zoomups, etc. not supposed to be noticed by small children but by their parents watching with them) in their interactions as seen in the show. Rei is also shown to be close to Minako in the manga

well the only guy couple I really know about and wrote about was Atem and Yugi from Yugioh. I mean they WAY THEY TALK TO EACH OTHER, it has to be more then mere friendship or brotherly love. They've got something more between them. I personally have no problem with same sex couples. After all the main characters of my novel are both boys and they fall in love with each other!
