I believe the main reason for the Boxer rumble is the unequal length headers. Also, that forester definitely has an aftermarket exhaust which amplifies it. I've been driving Subarus for the last 9 years, and love the intoxicating sound.
It's 90% an Impreza chassis of the first 2 generations. Up through 2008, it's more car than anything, well wagon. Quite literally it's just the Impreza wagon with a little taller and squared roof line and a 1" subframe spacer (for geometry, not ride height). The Forester's height is all done by the struts used and nothing else. Toss on WRX struts, and it'll sit as low as a WRX. You can literally swap the vast majority of interior and exterior parts between Imprezas and Forester because it's largely the same chassis. Also if you don't get the STI version where you live, all the STI parts bolt directly on, the entire power train, suspension, and interior, including swapping the STI pretty sweeping gauges if you want. By and large, pretty much everything from 93 through 08 in the Imprezas, first gen Legacys, Foresters, and Bajas are interchangeable to a large degree. There are some small variations but far less than you'd expect.
Konstantinos Indeed. A great offroad car even if apparently it does not look as capable as the big boys (Land Cruiser, Land Rovers etc) it surely is. If you are crazy enough you can also go with an Impreza, even though your underside will be a pottage after an offroad session, but just incredible how a small sedan can handle rough conditions. Once I've even seen a video of a completely ordinary Impreza bugeye 1.6i that was trying to make its way through a steep and very muddy path. In the video the other people were laughing because the guy tried to do that in a small sedan, but he succeded to the top.
I've owned my Sti Forester for 5 years now, turbo back exhaust, no cats, dyno tuned, 202kw (270hp) at wheels with 390nm. Dropped 40mm on Tein coilovers with Prodrive wheels. Is such a beast, sounds unreal and appreciating in value.
living in the states, we don't have the sti. I got a 2007 forester xt limited that is slowly making its way to sti status though. Lowering springs, rays gramlight 57dr, syms wing, wangan waist spoiler, sti intercooler, zerosports gauge pod with sti genome gauges, invidia g200 catback exhaust and many other small things. About to drop some money on a jdm sti front end conversion!
Fun fact:the Forester shares the same platform as the Impreza, including the STI. Which means an STI suspension will bolt up right under it and turn it into a monster.
Being a Forester owner, I would say it is a great buy. I only have the 2.5X, which is the baseline model and it is still just as fun. They are light, roomy, and who doesn't love that boxer sound?
I’ve replaced my e46 330i touring with an 06 forester xt. Must say the noise and the turbo lag definitely make it fun to drive everyday. Need to save up for an FSTI next :)
I've owned my Evo wagon for 5 years, it's dope. I'm not sure why it's not more popular? It's an Evo without a wing. Which is the only way to have an Evo since 1999.
Good review, thanks. I've had an FSTI 5 years and you pretty much nailed what it's like to own and drive. Super sound, super performance, super practical and higher gearing in gears 4-6 make it more highway friendly than the Impreza it is based on. And nothing like it exists in Japan these days. Latest 'hot' sti wagon from Subaru? A 1.6l CVT with red stickers. I cry. Until I turn the key on the Forester. Cheers.
I always say that the forester( SG9 2007)is my 1sr dream car too. I swear..its just so awesoma to find that there is someone wlse who thinks and dreams and desires like me.forester is just great..the frameless windows, the high speed it generates its just the thing..we will get them for sure.
Well in the States Evo IX are almost just as expensive as Evo Xs are. Well at least where I am but Evo VIIIs are pretty affordible. About 8 grand less than a IX. There are a few minor differences with interior and exterior.
You could have included the other Mitsubishi wagon, which is the Legnum VR-4. Bigger engine, same drivetrain and power output as these ones. Plus you can get it for much cheaper!

Nice video.I think Forester is better because its suspension is softer for daily driving and its AWD system allow to have nice weekend offroading too :)

The worst part of EVO is sound, I mean, there is no sound signature whatsoever. You can tell Subaru is going somewhere even if you can't see it (no other car in the world sound like proper Subaru), same goes to BMW V10, Viper, Mazda Rotor, Toyota 2jz, Honda DOHC VTEC, but Evo... Legacy STi would be my choice. Only seen one in the UK but test drove one in Japan and it was awesome. Great combination of both of these cars and looks a shit ton better then the Evo wagon.
If this isn't the most bias Subaru fan review I've seen in awhile, I don't know what is. First off, in what world can you get a forester wagon sti for $8k? One that has 200k miles? I will agree that the Evo rear end is terrible. However, the Subaru isn't going to win any prizes either without that hood scoop. As far as sound, throw an open dump on the Evo and tune it. Because if that isn't the most menacing turbo note, then I don't know what is.
My dad used to own an STI forester in Singapore from 2008 to 2011. He sold it for a higher price than for what he bought it because of the STI foresters value.
I dont understand pointless videos like this, we all knew what cars are an evo 9 and the forester sti, they both deserve appreciation and love, so buy any car you want.
Subaru has the forester, forester sti, legacy, legacy sti, impreza wrx, impreza wrx sti. Mistubushi has the Evo, which is fine but you cant have a mad fast turbo Mitsubishi unless you want to spend heaps on an Evo. Subaru fans have so many options..
CeSayrise You forgot the gas and the work shop costs that will screw you over because if you only have 15k for example for an E60!, how do you want to keep up with the maintences costs, and if something get broken then I will wish you much luck!
there is no way you could get a e60 m5 with that kind of money, everything about it would be expensive to maintain and you probably a get a regular 5 Series for maybe that kind of money
I own the Subaru Forester 2,5 XT with 2,5 turbo engine, and dont want to buy any other car for almost 5 years. Also subaru engines have big tuning potential so this car is like unlimited morning coffee or smthing like this. Great video! Greetings from Russia! p.s. sorry for my english, dont want to use any translate services just to practice my own skill.
Thank you for profiling these cars. I've spent hours torturing myself on Torque GT, specifically with these cars, because I know just how much you would get for the outlay. I agree the Forester is cool, but in stock form the Evo would munch it, not to mention the rarity factor of the Mitsubishi. Even by JDM import standards, it must be amongst the rarest available, hence the price tag. I think these two are in a market all to themselves. German equivalents are stratospherically priced in comparison (and nowhere near as cool). Skyline's are, again, a step apart and not found in wagon form from the factory. For those in the know, there is no alternative to either of these cars. Put it this way: a top spec Evo Wagon for 16k is still less expensive than a brand new Fiesta ST in the UK. It's a no-brainer.
_"It's JDM, so it's gonna be reliable"_ Unfortunately, NO. Fuji heavy industries does know how to make reliable stuff, and now they have learnt some management skills to make more profit: just sell crap, the quicker it breaks down, the faster you can sell a new car or charge huge money for an overhaul. I mean, even Toyota is doing this, even ****ing Toyota, right? They are omitting little features that didn't increase weight, nor consumption, little features that had no cons but made the engine reliable. One thing is the holes under the 3rd piston ring, they are easy to drill, and serve a purpose: oil that is scraped from the cylinder wall has a place to go, those holes. Now, even VAG, BMW, Toyota, etc. are drilling less and smaller holes, which gives a cost saving of 0.20$; the bloody result is that small holes get clogged up quicker and your engine starts using oil. Some bastards from Nissan or Jaguar don't drill these holes at all. Subaru has some strange fetish going on with plastics inside the FB20 engine block, the only purpose of those pieces of plastic is to let less coolant reach the cylinder. It's full of things like this. ^^same story with gearboxes and electronics; worst thing of all: it's designed in such a way that it's expensive to repair, because you need special equipment and specially made OEM-parts.
Subarus especially seem to be shit for reliability, they always seem to be blowing head gaskets, destroying gearboxes and all different sensors seem to fail crippling them in one way or another
Callum Pearce Yes, except that's not Subarus thing, it's the thing of new cars in general. Old Subarus were great, and new cars are almost all shit. --- No really, if you take apart a bmw engine you will notice they started using weaker valve springs on the m62 than they used on older engines. If you just look into the details you will see so many ways in which they purposefully decreased lifelime... --- By the way, on crappy sensors: often cleaning the sensor fixes it, especially hall sensors for the cam+crank shafts if they are place inside the engine. Also a good fix is to spray hydrophobic silicone on the contacts, especially during winter time. --- The boxer diesel had head gaskets that were not oil-proof, or at least not VW-longlife-oil-proof. Another problem is cooling of the engine; and an overheated engine can *** up valvesprings and piston rings, and blow the gasket because of too much expansion. --- The brands so know how to fix their problems, moreover they have done it before, but now they purposefully deny to.
+Callum Pearce and I presume you've owned every single subaru to declare this statement? The blown-gasket problem occured in some 2.5 engines and that only began in early 2000s. Some may still have this problem, but that could be down to poor maintenance, because boxer engines require to be looked after. I also believe you're just talking about high-performance Subarus like the WRX. Well, some people like to "thrash" their WRX's because they think they were built that way, so inevitably something breaks. However, looking at the reliability surveys, Subaru name always comes up on the list, whereas I struggle finding cars like Ford anywhere in the list.
Geri Jokūbaitis _Some may still have this problem_ I tell you: boxer diesel from 2008... It's gasket wasn't VW-longlife-oil proof. --- When comparing Subaru to other cars, it's not that bad; even when comparing Subaru's in general to other JDM cars, it's fine. But if you compare new Subarus to Old Subarus, it's terrible enginge- and gearbox-wise (for the CVT). The CVT is just a type of gearbox prone to overheating... I have to say Subaru CVTs are not worse (if not better) than other CVTs. Yet new subarus can take a lot of offroad-abuse, and usually the only thing to fix the bumper is to click it back and remove the chrome insert prior to offroading.
Shame the STi's were only imports in the UK but still a few around. Would definitely reccomend the Forester XT as its got the same engine and bonnet scoop!
Looks like we got a real car guy here... Doesn't even know where the ACD button is on the evo he's reviewing? So he just ignores one of its best features... Smh
Top End Seriously. I'd like to see this fat headed moron get 450hp out the forester Sti. I'm sure the head gaskets and rings will love it. What a fool.
They All Fall Evo can make more power stock due to the fmic and bigger stock turbo. If you pass that stock point, the Subaru is a much better platform with better drivetrain.
not even, Subaru engines blow ringland stock if you want to compare a built ej to a built 4g63, I hate to tell ya but the 4g63 will come out on top, its well known through out both communities that if you want a good road car, you get a Subaru, but if you want a race car, you buy an evo
Rodrigo Bastos YOU wrong SUBARU is more balance why you say cause is faster HahahA SUBARU won RALLY race more than evo SUBARU won 24 hours iN Germany 4 times
I am not entirely sure if they were ever available where this show is filmed, but I feel a better comparison for Subaru would be a Legacy gt wagon (possibly spec-b), it's a lower to the ground more performance oriented (similar to Evo wagon) wagon while the Forester (a crossover suv) would be better compared to the Mitsubishi Outlander which is the same crossover style. But thats just my 2 cents still loved the film!

Nissan Stagia??
ZeGenesis stagea
extremely expensive and almost impossible to find...
warowner9 ...they're like 10k
I was only thinking about the r34 cause i dont like the look of the older ones... In that case you are right but still a very rare car
over here in aus they cost from 5.5k dollars up
ive got this subaru forester sti SG9 ......and what ever he said its true ...... puts a smile on my face every time i drive it XD
for around 15k pounds I'd get an rs4 or e60 m5
mehmet 1923 youre pretty dumb arent you?
mehmet 1923 A fucked up E60 for 15k sure...
Good luck to
-repair it
-insure it
- park it (#kidsLikeToBreakCars)
- and you will cry
Buy a Twingo
CeSayrise You forgot the gas and the work shop costs that will screw you over because if you only have 15k for example for an E60!, how do you want to keep up with the maintences costs, and if something get broken then I will wish you much luck!
there is no way you could get a e60 m5 with that kind of money, everything about it would be expensive to maintain and you probably a get a regular 5 Series for maybe that kind of money
I got a Honda Accord type r as a practical family car and as far as cheap performance cars that can fit the whole family I'd say it's spot on
COULD YOU DO THE IMPREZA STI (SUBARU) PLEASE!!!!!
The EVO wagon can sound really good
Ive heard some Forester with a really deep burble
evo
I own the Subaru Forester 2,5 XT with 2,5 turbo engine, and dont want to buy any other car for almost 5 years. Also subaru engines have big tuning potential so this car is like unlimited morning coffee or smthing like this. Great video! Greetings from Russia! p.s. sorry for my english, dont want to use any translate services just to practice my own skill.
What about the legacy?
Shawn Burnham yep - especially JDM Legacy STi (which is by the way more rare, more cool and more affordable than Evo Wagon)
It's a no-brainer.
you have to try the Mitsubishi Galant VR6
That evo is still better looking than the new 2016 one.
👍 for Alex
👍 for Ethan
Never knew they made an evo wagon... thats like my wet dream
Car throttle evo wagon vs stagea pls
I've driven an Evo . Find. But more often than not they seem to end up rotting away on someone's driveway or in their garage.
subaru army!!!
Fronty YES
Fronty the evo doesn't look that appealing, the Forster looks bad ass
Will Harris agreed
Ya sure
c:
You should also look at the JDM Subaru Legacy wagon. The BP5 chassis with the turbo engine. That is a proper sleeper.
Well it's nice, but it isn't SuperGramps
I have to say the Evo Lancer Wagon is one of the sexiest ever made!! 👍 Love every video you make keep it up!
What there was an Evo Wagon.. Shit I never knew
2500 worldwide
The mitsubishi legnum is my all time favorite
#bringback2jz
Subarus especially seem to be shit for reliability, they always seem to be blowing head gaskets, destroying gearboxes and all different sensors seem to fail crippling them in one way or another
Callum Pearce
Yes, except that's not Subarus thing, it's the thing of new cars in general.
Old Subarus were great, and new cars are almost all shit.
---
No really, if you take apart a bmw engine you will notice they started using weaker valve springs on the m62 than they used on older engines. If you just look into the details you will see so many ways in which they purposefully decreased lifelime...
---
By the way, on crappy sensors: often cleaning the sensor fixes it, especially hall sensors for the cam+crank shafts if they are place inside the engine.
Also a good fix is to spray hydrophobic silicone on the contacts, especially during winter time.
---
The boxer diesel had head gaskets that were not oil-proof, or at least not VW-longlife-oil-proof. Another problem is cooling of the engine; and an overheated engine can *** up valvesprings and piston rings, and blow the gasket because of too much expansion.
---
The brands so know how to fix their problems, moreover they have done it before, but now they purposefully deny to.
Geri Jokūbaitis
_Some may still have this problem_
I tell you: boxer diesel from 2008...
It's gasket wasn't VW-longlife-oil proof.

When comparing Subaru to other cars, it's not that bad; even when comparing Subaru's in general to other JDM cars, it's fine.
I agree with your choice Subarus are better 😀
Oh, cool. there is a Evo behind me. i let him pass me.
oh shit that's a wagon! WTF :(
Can confirm everything about the forester STi, absolutely awesome car. Though i drive the first model of it, a 2000 SF5 STi straight from japan.
why the forestor over wrx wagon?
i don't get it either
because the wrx would win no doubt
Apart Media I'm about to go crazy from what you just said
More interior space, less of a cop magnet, similar or more power.
From 5:04 to 5:09, that was a great angle ! Very immersive !!
Evo (9) > STi all day
No one cares.
11 "people" actually like to have bukkake.
Evo9 Boii fanboy
Forester STI > Evo 9 > Impreza STI
Evo 1-6 >>> Evo 7 - 10
Evo 5 GSR > Evo 9 > Impreza WRX STI > Other Evos
Just because he doesn't know where a button is on a dashboard, doesn't mean he isn't a car guy.
it's staring him right in the face. drivers side, by the door, right of the steering wheel. all the ACD switches are there. SMH
Subaru Boxer engine... awesome sound, and 4g63 of Lancer Evo... Amazing
Evo Wagon > STi
I personally love the plastic interiors of JDM, like my Mitsubishi Lancer, because its a constant reminder that what we paid for is under the bonnet
The evo is better than the subaru for looks, rep and i love it.
Rodrigo Bastos YOU wrong SUBARU is more balance why you say cause is faster HahahA SUBARU won RALLY race more than evo SUBARU won 24 hours iN Germany 4 times
K well have fun with that reliability :P
I am not entirely sure if they were ever available where this show is filmed, but I feel a better comparison for Subaru would be a Legacy gt wagon (possibly spec-b), it's a lower to the ground more performance oriented (similar to Evo wagon) wagon while the Forester (a crossover suv) would be better compared to the Mitsubishi Outlander which is the same crossover style. But thats just my 2 cents still loved the film!
