Welcome to the Letterman TH-cam Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.
George is smart and a class act and Dave knows it despite the audience snickering (which George calls out beautifully).
Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in prison for attacking Norwegian model Audun Carlsen. He was convicted of assault and false imprisonment after being found guilty of handcuffing Carlsen to a radiator and beating him with a metal chain.
Do you understand pride people are extremely physical and violent to women and children?
3:57 - The audience laughter followed by George's playful yet sincere admonishment. Killing them with kindness, indeed. Remarkable interview and impressively composed for living his truth in a time when it couldn't have been easy. He's been through a lot; hope he's hanging in there these days.
he is so witty and quick for 22 years old, George always handled any interview
!!
I LOVE George of the 80s ! Not only was his voice unbeatable, but he was HONEST and sincere in his interviews!
NOW, he just tells people HOW he wants them to think of him.
What happened to him? 😢
Yeah, I like BG of the 80’s too.
@@noturgyal5038 I think the press was unduly rough on him, and he got fed up with it.
His confidence and relax nature is unbelievable for 22
very clever man
facts
It’s called heroin
Amen!
He was out of it by his own admission in his autobiography
George O'Dowd: incredibly calm and composed at age 22. Amazing talent---go, Eltham! 💓💓
As a child of the 80’s George and the Culture Club were ever present in those days. You couldn’t turn on the radio or mtv without hearing him. A pioneer musically and socially. Gracefully paved the way for so many others in the face of much adversity.
So much coded language! George is a badass.
I was in High School and we were all obsessed with Late Night when this interview happened. This along with Mr T was one of the most anticipated interviews all year. Everyone couldn't wait to see how Dave was going to treat him
I was also in high school. I was a freshman and 14 years old, when “Do you really want to hurt me”.
I remember hearing Culture Club on a late night show on local radio in London by a DJ called Gary Crowley, they were so exciting. Quite underground initially.
I also remember having a genuine conversation with my mum about whether George was a boy or a girl. Pure innocence back then, nothing hateful at all, we'd never seen anything like him. I love that his existence has taught us that people are, and can be, different.
A wonderful, real, intelligent, troubled, brave, complicated human. We used to see the Karma Chameleon boat going up and down the River Thames.
Ahead of his time with wisdom and awareness of ignorance. Great sweet calm dude.
0:40 he has such a relaxing, smooth voice it’s crazy😅
I've met Sir. Boy George recently in Los Angeles. He was such a positive person. I mean really positive person Infront me and it really made me think he is like some kind of Buddhist monk or something so enlightened person . Good person. 👍
If you overlook his violent and toxic crimes yes, he's almost a saint
@@NagasakiBladers Cocaine's a helluva drug
he is literally a kidnapper...
@@NagasakiBladers haha
Boy George imo became a walking contradiction. Looked like a woman but wants to be called Sir. I hate that word and I consider it misgendering when someone refers to me as that.. BG may be seen as a pioneer but he gives into the right wing bigots and is kind of one himself now. He went against trans people actually.
What a wise, calm, and strong person was George at the only 22. He still a very smart person.
The Album "colour by numbers" was an incredible "chef d'œuvre"
I think he could get back into the music scene again. I hear Culture Club music on the radio all the time
at 22 years old, wow, he's a kid...he handled this amazingly....he was mature beyond his years.......
Wow 22 so smart love him❤
Culture Club, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Cyndi Lauper, Lene Lovich, Prince, Michael Jackson, ABC and if I thought for longer I could remember more. These are the faces and songs for pre-kindergarten me with a sibling that was 7 years older. I'm glad we got our MTV in Podunkville. I distinctly remember Church of the Poison Mind IN the parking lot of the apartment complex we were living in. For almost a full year. Car radios, cheap boomboxes and even little transistor radios on the steps. I would go as far as saying Georgie Boy who wasn't at his best at some points the past 35 years, should be considered one of those international treasures. He is. There is no other Boy George. He and Culture Club made songs that have become some of the new "standards". Karma Chameleon is just as important as I Got Rhythm. WAR IS STUPID!
G is still alive and touring in 23, plus he looks pretty damn good all these years later.
Agree
No, he doesn't !
His voice is different now. I heard that his vocal cords had polyps on them, which is apparently common in singers but his were bleeding so they had to remove them.
8:32 “let’s just forget it”😂😂😂
Knew he was out of his depth but experienced enough to stop digging.
My favourite George era. ❤️
Mine too
HIS VOICE and integrity (honesty) were at the top in the 80s!
Me too.
He's a really smart guy ( George )
7:24 people remember those kinda songs. Do you really want to hurt me?? Do you really want to make me cry 😢🎉❤ I loved that song. this interview. Courageous inspiring 🎉
George is the best!
Such a beautiful soul ❤️
He looks so beautiful here and that audience is lame because they can't take the beauty
Literally he’s gorgeous
I love him!
I love to hear him talk.
He was a bit shocking in 84 but he seems totally normal now
He’s rather tame compared to most ppl now actually
Therein lies the problem...
I never felt shocked by him or his looks even back then. to me his look just seemed authentic to who he was. He is an artist, he’s an entertainer, I never understood people’s negativity towards him, but that speaks more about who they are.
George is beautiful 🥰
He always did his make up so beautifully. Better than us females 😊
So true. I've always admired his beautiful looks, which I myself could never get! 😅 More beautiful than many women. Best of all, so gentle and pure, like otherworldly. Love BG.
RIP Hervé Villechaize
He is a class act.
ahead of his time
At 10yrs old I thought he was gorgeous. And used to stare at the album cover while singing his songs.
Love love boy George!!
Boy George is hard to figure out sometimes. But man I gotta say, Karma Chameleon and Bow Down Mister are two of my favorite songs of all time. Bow Down Mister just blows me away.
Comprendiendo... ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Always jolly and happy
Love Boy George
Dave is a great interviewer.
BG does favor Brooke Shields. I've never noticed until he said it. I just love him ❤
You can tell David Letterman was sort of trying to make fun. Boy George has way more confidence now
6:23 "in america there's a very big kind of black and white separation which is now dying.."
OH MY POOR BOY... HOW WRONG YOU WERE.. HOW HOPEFUL YOU WERE ABOUT HUMANS..
❤❤❤
As I age...I actually respect someone like Boy George more than Dave, because he isn't afraid to just be who he is, to embody how he feels, to be kind, nice. Dave meanwhile functions more like a guy who tries to poke and bring out something uneasy in people, to sort of unsettle them, almost provoke them. Which is...weird, it's like he comes off as someone who was afraid to be who he was, so he acted like being culturally conventional and questioning anything unusual is the only sane or smart thing to do. Which means Dave put way too much stock in what others think of him?
Dave got more interesting with age, but here he was just brash and kinda crude. It's quite interesting George wasn't emotionally phased by it at all, that takes some very firm and mature peace with who you are. I never saw an interview with him before, but he comes off smart, well.
I'd have to disagree with you on that. Although I respect your opinion, I don't know these 2 that well at all, I do know their names of course, but the way the interviewer ended this was with a lot of compliments, also saying it was fun interviewing him and then he hoped he wasn't offended and despite the audience, or how the interviewer was perceived, I could sense that comment was extremely genuine and heartfelt, and the young artist had a sincere smile at the end. They knew they were entirely different individuals and they still respected each other despite the questions and exchanges. I've seen interviewers that left their hate and distant show but I got more curiosity from the oldie 😊
George, just turned 22, when this aired!
George already seems really intelligent here in the 80s.He was really ahead of his age for 22,and he is really beautiful here I thought he was a real woman back then when I was a kid Lol.
God David was so young!
He was very young at that time👀
22?

Boy George sounds a bit like Smokey Robinson. So I can tell he was influenced by him,he's definitely a man I bet he has no problem getting a woman if he wanted one 😉
He loves men.
I always thought he had that Smokey tone to his voice. But also his own unique style too.

It stinks when relationships get bad press and too many people know personal business

Letterman's audience was always like a pack of snickering hyenas
"You cant knock talent"
We've always been a bit rebellious in Britain with regards to music genres and styles and presentation - I don't think Americans are, or were; they're very 'conservative' and that's why they missed out on some great times and music like the Glam Years, and those that did had to find their niche and home in Britain like Suzi Quatro as just one example. If she'd stayed in the US, she'd have missed out on a fabulous long career and all the fun of the music period she contributed to during the early 70s.
I forgot how tall George O'Dowd is. I met him back in UK, when Malcolm McLaren managed the band that became Bow WOw Wow and wanted George to front the band except Malcolm wanted George to call himself Lieutenant Lush. This line up didn't last beyond a few rehearsals. Next time I heard of George was this new band Culture Club. I had to agree with John Lydon's assessment at the time, he thought George was a great talent but his band had no balls , " they're so wimpy, so la-de-la-de-dah ".
How were they wimpy ? Lol. They were outside the box at the time especially George
George, wimpy? I don't think so.
Neither of you are very good at reading comprehension, are you? Lydon said the band was wimpy, not George.
Not dead, bankrupt!
Seems a bit odd. Kind of a Epstine vibe
OH BEHAVE
letterman so bad questions.... i never like im
british stars are just cooler.
Suspicious how he mentions everyone but BOWIE as being an influence, when we all know the truth of the matter. At that time, the Summer of 1983, Bowie was a major chart rival, with the massive success of Let's Dance and the Serious Moonlight Tour.
He has said in the past that David Bowie was one of his biggest influences.
Hé was and is a big fan of Bowie .
Hé came in clubs were Bowie also came before hé became a singer
@@laydown6Bowie and Marc Bolan inspired the androgynous looks of the new romantic singers of the 80s
Hea aperv. Arrested many times fir perverted behavior
SOPHIE TURNER! I LOVE YOU!
George is bemused by the stupid US questions.
😂😂❤😂
As we can see Sophie Turner is the most beautiful woman in the World
Maga folks: Who tf is this new trans activist coming for our children!!??? *Clutches pearls*
Trans “Activist” are coming for your kids. Trans people aren’t.
Like that freak in the MN pride parade exposing his junk to kids?
He is not a murderer or a 14 year old that stabs a 17 year old as they do now.
You can talk, Most children now KILL .
George is a smart, sensible man who just dresses differently but has a lot of respect for people. Unlike the children of today that hate their parents/ rebel/ then become murderes and drug addicts, wanting everthing their " own way".
Their attitude " stinks" today!
Unlike George, who's attitude is " caring".
