    what a beautiful story!! on so many levels. And Isabel is so correct when she points out that people do not 'put up with' relatives anymore because they haven't been taught to. Pity that. How much better off everyone would be if they surrounded friends and family with a warm blanket of acceptance and love. It is a very lonely cold world out there for most people.

      I am with Quentin Crisp on this one, relatives should not overstay their welcome and like fish go off after three days. Not sure if he borrowed this from someone else but I certainly agree with him - thankfully you can select friends but sadly landed with relatives

    This has so much of the dramatics in it , fairly wore me to a frazzle ! Couldn’t help but keep on listening,
    it’s so far distant from how we speak together nowadays. Ah , how they lived back then 🧐

    Shortly following the end of WWII, Isabel, a widow, finds herself struck with pangs of conscience. When she was a young woman during WWI, she deliberately interfered with the delivery of a letter meant for someone else. Now she feels she must confess and do what she can to repair the damage.

    Dear God, how depressing- though well written and acted. I imagine a companion play, dealing with the forthcoming murder mystery about 5 years after those two start living together. Seriously- if they were supposed to be 'gels' in 1913, they would be about the age of my late grandparents, all of whom lived well into their 80s, and the thought of being shackled to someone like this for more than a quarter of a century is horrifying.

    • @deborahrobertson8606
      @deborahrobertson8606 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Many women had to make a home together because an entire generation of men were slaughtered in the 1st World War. So many women lost their fiances or husbands or simply had no hope of finding a suitable man. Read Vera Britten's "A Testament of Youth" Her brother and his 2 best friends, one of which was her fiance all died. This carried on after the 2nd World War for the same reason.

    I don't really see why she's foolish.

    • @lizadams2263
      @lizadams2263 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's meant satirically. Sharp was a great observer, and points out that sometimes a foolish seeming act is wise. But it takes a while for the rest of their circle to see it. But you saw it right off!
