Curiously, recently one guy broght significance to Articuno as a relevant meta threat. Freezai done a video about it. Articuno showed itself a incredible Blizzard spammer because of the release of Alolan Ninetales + Aurora Viel. The thing is Gen 9 broght the defense boost for ice pokemon in snowstorm, so it's bulkier than ever. Sheer Cold can bully any dondozo that appears.

I can't wait for the Gen 2 video. Slowking has always been my favorite Pokémon, and somehow whenever the power creep tries to touch him my guy just keeps getting a small boost and blitzed past it. In Gen 5 he and Slowbro got Regenerator, in gen 8 he got a whole new cousin from Galar, and in Gen 9 when almost every Psychic-Type lose Teleport (even Slowbro, poor guy), my guy gets a brand new signature move that is even better than Teleport.

      Pros: Counters other weather
      Enables own snow plays
      Cons: Worse in trick room
      Worse against negative priority
      Incompatible with weather besides snow
      Worse against absolutely glacial pokemon
Countering other weathers makes it pretty good, I can see that being worth more than losing to negative priority or really slow pokemon (a few of which Slowking actually does pretty well against if it can go first), but I don't think it either really climbs to dominance over the other.

But there's one point I disagree on: Regional forms. Alona Ninetails isn't Ninetails and Hisui Arcanine isn't Arcanine. I feel like your last statement shows just how power crept Pokémon is, when Pokémon such as Mew, a mythical Pokémon with a BST of 600 are now considered "Mediocre" in terms of almost all aspects except for the part where it can learn every TM in game is ridiculous to think about, so much so especially with stuff like Smogon's tiering that it feels like eventually by like gen 11-12 we'll see all time ubers like Kyoger, Giratina, and Zacian show up in the OU tier somehow.

    • @aprinnyonbreak1290
      @aprinnyonbreak1290 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Another good case is Arceus.
120 in every stat makes it... kinda anemic offensively. Nobody ever runs an offensive arceus without boosting moves.
120 speed is still pretty good though, and 120-120-120 bulk is still quite bulky.
In general the ubers offensive stat benchmark of 150 is also not what it used to be, unless there's like a 120-130 base power move behind it.

      @KeithKemp_
I mean the plate boost usually just functionally makes Judgement a 120 BP move, since I can't really think of any cases where a plate Arceus is using a different STAB over Judgement. Maybe the odd, rare physical plate Arceus, which probably runs Eq or Stone Edge... which is also base 100 normally
Like, it's not nothing, but, it's not exactly pushing Arceus to be an offensive powerhouse; you still only really see unboosted Judgement on mostly defensive or support sets that don't have room for Calm Mind between everything else they're stacking on that Arceus Club Sandwich today.
And similarly, I don't ever see non-SD Extreme Speed, except as a weird utility option on similar defensive sets

Something like, Savage Heart; his attacks whether physical or special always target whichever defense stat is lower on the opponent. If they are the same, the move works as normal.

(Mewtwo, on the other hand, should get an offense-boosting ability. Since the thing that made is scary in Gen 1 was all the Amnesia sweeping, which if it had a mix of Simple and Clear Body? Stats go up twice, and can't be brought back down. Perfect for Nasty Plot or Calm Mind.)

The Hitmonchan ability theory craft at the end was a really cool idea. Give the Hitmons all unique fighting style based abilities. Maybe even introduce two new Hitmon's for the other two special based stat distibutions as well, to "complete" the lines (ie. if sp.def or sp.att are greater than a certain number and/or EV maxed out Tyrogue evolves into those forms).
Hitmonchan: "Bob and Weave"; If This pokemon attacks first with a "punch" move, redirect any attack this turn to it's ally.
Hitmonlee: "Extended Impact"; Kicking moves force the target to swap out if they fall under half health.
Hitmontop: "Rotational Entry"; Removes all entry hazards and/or terrain on switch in.
    New Forms and their abilities:
Hitmonyama (based on Yoshiro Akiyama, like how Hariyama is, and the Sp.Def evolution), a Judo based Hitmon: "Debilitating Throws"; 'Throw" moves lock the opponent from switching the following turn.
Hitmonzen; (based on meditation, name change can be on a famous fighter that turned to being a scholar or monk, Sp.Att); "Meditative Conditioning"; Contact moves against the pokemon have a 10%-20% chance of missing, rolled independently from normal accuracy checks.

Reworking abilities and moves are definitely a way to counter power creep for older pokemon. Imagine, for instance, Magma Armor making pokemon immune to ice type moves. Camerupt and Magcargo would instantly get its own niche.
Other currently useless abilities that a rework could give pokemon a niche:
Damp (affects and counters terrain somehow),
Illuminate (powers up allies fairy type moves and accuracy),
Run Away (adds to damaging priority moves the property of U-turn of switching out),
Rattle (Maximizes speed and lowers damage from received dark, bug and ghost type moves, if the target is hit by one),
Filter and Solid Rock (reduces by half the damage received, instead of only 25%),
Rain Dish and Ice Body (recovers more HP and also raises defense/special defense while active),
Leaf Guard (does practically everthing support imaginable to allies and itself while sunny, from reducing damage like friend guard, to protecting from stats, added effects, mental status, priority moves, redirection, etc),
Overcoat: (protects againist flinches and defense/sp. defense drops)
Pressure: (doubles the PP reduced from PP reducing moves like Spite, makes the Imprison move get +1 priority, and doubles the effect of status stat reducing moves applied in an opponent like Leer, Screech, Eerie's Impulse and so on. All affected moves would get perfect accuracy too. Surpasses Clear Body)
Unnerve: cancels opponent's Intimidate, Dark Aura, Fairy Aura, and "ruin" abilities while the pokemon with Unnerve is in play
Early Bird: gives priority +1 to status moves that affect only the user or only the user and its allies

Even if you just need a tank to help round out your team, taking Venusaur isn't a bad option. It can be slow enough to use under trick room or using your opponents sun setter to your advantage. A bulky Venusaur, with Black Sludge, a Sun Boost while carrying Sludge Bomb, Sleep Power, Leech Seed and Synthesis can still be a major threat or switch in on some powerful moves to eat them up.

I honestly hope that Tera is here to stay indefinitely. Even with Megas coming in Legends ZA. It has so much potential to constantly shift the meta to at least some degree. Simply because new threats can surface throughout the year as the previous ones want for counters. Add new Abilities and Moves to older Pokémon and we might reach one of the most diverse fields yet. Yes, there'll always be ones that rise above the rest. But with the sheer amount of possible strategies and Tera enabling previously unthinkable options for them? It's that much more interesting.

It should be noted that canonically, most of the Legendary Pokemon aren't known to exist....
And Mewtwo should be as strong as a Peak Legendary Pokemon that is nerf'd (as it's stated in DPP & BDSP that Legendary Pokemon are often weaker when caught)....
And to artificially create a Pokemon of that level is actually pretty damn impressive....
That also means that is canonically the highest level of power a trainer can actually use with the Pokemon (without magic).

I feel like gimmicks should also be talked, because at the end of the day, they will come back sooner or later - especially if they are fan favourite. Like we are definitely keeping Tera typings at least every few gens (BW3, if that happens, definitely will have that). And Megas may hopefully stay with us this time.

I know nothing of the competitive pokemon world, but I always hoped my boy Tentacruel was considered a hidden gem from gen1. I mean surprisingly one of the fastest watertypes, huge specdef (maybe helpful against the typically specatk elecs and psys), could even be bred to have mirrorcoat as a countermove and raindish to combo with blacksludge to make it really hard to kill.
But I'm probably overestimating strats I relied on in X&Y for a 3v3 all-water pokemon team to real 1v1 or 2v2 competitive mechanics.

Call it "gen 1 favoritism" but gen 1 and 2 do have the most mons needing help. Another thing that has bothered me for years since I learned it. Why do all the starters not have the same BST? Why is Venusaur at 525 while Charizard is 534, etc? All starters should just have the same bst. Their moves, abilities and stat spread already differ them as is.

The main pokemon that definitely needs a rework is mew. He should have at least 140 or 150 Sp. Atk, he’s shown in movies he can keep up with mewtwo who has a 154 Sp. Atk. They could even take away from his bulk and keep his stat total at 600.
Stat split I’d like to see, I think it mirrors a lot of Mewtwos stats. A bit weaker stat wise but is a lot more versatile since mew will be able to capitalize on its huge move pool with a slightly better speed stat then mewtwo.
    HP:80
    Attack:70
    Defense:80
    Sp. Atk:150
    Sp. Def:80
    Speed:140
    600 stat total

I almost wish pokemon would intentionally make legendaries broken in their debut generation and then nerf them afterwords. Like you could even make it an in universe canon part of the lore where the respective legendaries are stronger in their own region and don’t have as much power outside their home turf. Then just do some standardized buff/nerf when they are or aren’t in their debut regions and you’d be able to have new pokemon feel impactful when they come out, but could overall have the list of pokemon across generations not need to trend upwards in power.

They need to change mewtwo's abilities cuz pressure is woefully useless in a metagame where the winner is decided in 4 to 5 turns and have max pp on all their moves, and unnerve wont do anything to mons who dont use berries especially in a meta where fluttermane and urshifu are everywhere

Here's a bird that's weak to Rock, and two others REALLY weak to Rock. But Zapdos remains pretty good at basically everything and has never been powercrept (therefore having the niche of all-purpose Flying/Electric cornered), and Moltres and Articuno constantly stumbling into tournament meta every other week because some doofus top-tier can't handle a couple of very angry chickens.

How Mew hasn't been turned into a Psychic Normal type is beyond me.
It would give it 2x from Bug/Dark bug isn't common enough for it to be a problem.
    1x to everything except for
    0.5x from Psychic
    And 0x from Ghost
    Meanwhile
Gurafarig, Farigiraf, Oranguru indeedee, and most interestingly MEOLETA have that typing.
Mew is the original base Pokemon of all Pokemon it should be NORMAL. It's the most normal Pokemon genetically speaking.
Not that it really matters since they don't want to add it to competitive Pokemon
The ability to synchronize is really weird.
I think it would be really cool if synchronize would actually change the spread of the base stats based on the opponent or a team Pokemon.
Any ability for it to change base stats, or something similar to Arceus Element plates would be dope. Like an Attack plate making it focus its attack stats over defense etc.
The ability to learn any TM would allow it to easily have a strong move against Dark.
This would make Mew pretty busted, but it's friggin Mew! It should be busted.

Power creep doesn't have to be a thing if the people designing the games were more creative. In fact, they could have saved overpowered abilities specifically for legendaries. Of course what makes abilities overpowered heavily depends on a lot of factors, and some of these things they can't even predict ahead of time they just have to see how it plays out when players adopt techniques and explore. But still, I'd like to think this is totally manufactured problem. Power creep isnt inevitable by any means. It sure is common though.

    Or just been "Good"
Maybe it's less relevant in vgc potentially but I think it's always been kinda threatening there as well
