    I briefly worked administration for an indie game development company, I was treated like a god when I stocked the fridge with protein shakes, coffee, energy drinks, Gatorade, and water. They made me feel so happy I also brought in a ton of snacks the next day on my own dime because I just wanted to support the team, it was the best feeling ever lol
    Edit; wow you guys are the best, thank you for all your kind comments!! Just to share some details: refilling the drink fridge was apart of my actual job description - all the beverages were paid for by the company I just had to make sure they were always available - I was going to the store basically daily which is why they were so happy because apparently I was the first receptionist they had that was so diligent about making sure EVERYTHING was always in stock instead of just waiting until the fridge was low enough to do a big restock, that’s why they treated me so nicely lol I also took flavour requests so I was probably being buttered up so they could get the flavour they wanted which is fine by me lol.
    Since I was going to the store everyday, when they started selling those Halloween packs of snacks and chocolates and stuff I thought it would be nice to get some of those of course I didn’t use the company card for snacks because I wasn’t approved to buy snacks, I also got dried fruits and nuts for the health conscious people. THAT day was when they really started treating me like my shit doesn’t stink lol, next level niceness, I felt like a royal. It really was a wonderful job and I would still be there if I didn’t have to move. and for anyone worried about me using my own money for snacks, it really didn’t break the bank at all for me and it made me and everyone so happy it was absolutely worth it.

      More game developers need to understand that you need a functioning game before you start trying to go "above and beyond"
      Just like with fnaf security breach. They fully admitted is that they kept putting more and more work on their plate to the point where it just became too much and then the game came out really sloppy and the story got all messed up cuz they had to cut out huge chunks of it. Like no make a main game first and then if you have cool ideas along the way you just write them down and if you have time then you put those in....

    That's why I like Indie games, or games made by a small team, more than any multibilionaire company games (exceptions can be made to Nintendo, in some cases. I like Zelda, ok? And the Zelda team always makes great games).
    Like, indie developers pour such love and care into their games, and genuinely put the effort to make a great story and a great game, even if they're making a rather simple gameplay. Not to mention they're usually the only ones still using the old pixelated 16 bits sprite style which I just find so charming. Also, they don't make their games cost an arm and a leg with obscenely inflated prices for a half baked game and a dozen DLCs for the missing content.
    Also, I have so much respect for game developers. I remember having to create a game for an assignment in college last year, it wasn't even anything complex, it was just the most basic BS imaginable and that was an absolute nightmare. Heck, I was so glad my partner was having an easier time with the pygame code, so he let me focus solely on the graphics part and doing our other assignment with HTML code, because I felt like crying just looking at the basic pygame code.

    • @harukastorm4
      @harukastorm4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      A lot of indie game devs just don't expect to be living of there games. So the price often isn't proportional to the work that went in.
      And even if someone would like to sell there game for more, it wouldn't be received so well by the community, because so many people sell there work under what it would be worth.
      Both AAA and indie games get more and more complex and take more time to do. So you would think the prices would reflect that. But they can't do that, or no one would buy it. So the AAA studios try to break even through purchaseable DLCs. And indie Devs often just take the los.

    • @harukastorm4
      @harukastorm4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Because of that, I would advocate for higher prices to begin with.
      I know everything gets more expensive. I myself also struggle with that. But underpaying people who work there ass of ist the solution to that problem.
      That is a view that is mostly coming from my own experience. I crochet - that's an art form that can only be done by hand. Of course you get faster with more experience but the prices (to sell) are most often so extremely low that some people offer you less than what you paid for the materials. Because people don't understand that it takes a lot of time and how expensive the materials can be. No to mention that you can get repeated motion injuries, when you crochet to much. (Same with working with a mouse and keyboard for hours on end)

      Yeah, kinda pisses me off when people blame AAA devs for what is a systemic issue in the industry. I’ll probably be in that space for a minute because we don’t often get benefits as workers in indie and I want job security/experience. Sucks to know how badly they get treated by both the companies and their fans for just doing their best to hit deadlines while hoping to make something amazing with more funding and people behind it. I would say I’ve also seen a fair amount of indie companies treat employees badly, so it’s just hard to know where is safe anymore. I wanted to go into indie as a budding game dev, but have now realized how much experience and notoriety you need before ever being successful in that industry. Harsh reality for game devs, but it’s necessary to understand it going into the industry.

    With companies they set deadlines, they need to meet in order to keep the fans happy, also let’s be real they want money. So they are trying to make a good game cheap enough so they can make the the bigggest possible profit.
    Also it’s hard for them to express ideas and do fun secrets, because they want to appeal to everyone and they don’t want people to be confused.

      (Genuinely though, Waldo is a character from the puzzle book series Where's Waldo, in which the objective on every page is to locate Waldo and his friends in a crowded scene with many people. Similar premise to the I Spy books.
      Waldo's signature outfit is a red and white peppermint striped hat and shirt. He wears glasses and he has dark brown/black-?- hair iirc)

    And the sad thing is, the AAA developers want to add those cool things a lot of the time, they are just given no time by their bosses.

    Thing is both devs are equally ran through the ground, difference is ones burnt out from making a great game and the other from corporate BS meddling constantly

    The first one is how I perceive indie players everytime they feel the need to tell people they play indie games.
