- Edgar Edens of North Carolina comes from a family of cotton farmers, dating back to his grandfather who farmed during the Great Depression. Edgar owns and operates his own cotton operation including his own cotton gin. Edgar shares the story of his vintage cotton picker, a 1961 International Harvester Model 314 mounted on an International Harvester 504 Diesel Tractor. When Edgar bought the picker, it had just 800 original hours. He did a full restoration and now uses the tractor once a year to pick cotton on his farm for friends and family.

Edgar is one of the finest men in our neck of the woods. A very hard working individual and extremely smart. He cleared most of his farmland himself. He is salt of the Earth. He never fails to glorify God for where he is in life and for what he has and has been able to accomplish. He owns thousands of acres of land and a top notch, modern cotton gin. I am proud to be his friend.

Drove one of these and a twin row (602) in Australia as a 21 yr old, on a 500 acre farm in 1973. Not a pleasant experience sitting out in 35 deg C blazing sun, with the fans roaring behind your head and getting covered in shredded plant matter going down wind. Worst part was trying to clear the spindles once the dew fell, with a pocket knife by torch light at 10pm in the middle of a paddock by yourself. Used to be fanatical about using the ground clutch, as I always thought about the consequences of being eaten by the machine ! With all that, I wouldn't have missed the experience for the world, something very few people get to do. Farm also had a McCormack Deering kerosene/petrol tractor (no wheels) mounted in a frame backwards for an irrigation pump, and an IH 1066 Hydro tractor for towing the cotton trailers and plowing. Years later I restored a Farmall A for a boat tractor, - not big on brakes but great fun to play with.

I spent many many hours after school and on weekends on an International Harvester one row cotton picker. First gear on first pick and second gear on second picking. We have a double fan high drum in Arizona. Good Cotton was 2 to 3 bales per acre. I could do one acre after school, about 13 1/4 mile rows. When I dumped I had to climb up in the basket and trailer and tramp it down, because I only got one trailer that would hold 3 bales. So much work, but thankful I could do it, great memories. Loved the video.

We use to put the tractors under the pickers each year, had to take the top of trans off to turn the bullgears around because the tractor ran backward. 3 gears one way and 1 the other , we made a special socket to remove the spindles from the header. We ran water and oil and late at night we shut the water off because of due.

These old tractors have a special place in my heart, my grandpa used to have a little collection/ museum with all the little machines he haver ever had. I used to stay there ours on end and just take in the magnificence of these old machines. Now every time i see one i always get reminded of him, of the happy times we had spent together. It's been almost a year now since he passed away, I never knew what to think of it. Something like that have never happened to me before and I fellt that it came to quickly for me to comprehend. These videos bring warmth to my heart and the storys they tell bring me joy. thank you!

About 1960-1963 my Uncle Bernell and Grandpa used a 1row cotton picker that was mounted on an M Farmall.
They would still have cotton pickers that used long bags to pick cotton.
This was in Chicot County Arkansas.

Brings back memories. I grew up in the cotton field in West Tennessee. Daddy's first picker was an International 1 row much like this one. His may have been an older model. His had a metal water tank. I noticed a plastic water tank on this 314. I don't remember which tractor it was mounted on but it was a gas burner. I used to climb on top of the basket and clean the trash off.
Joe Cates my dad grew up in West TN. Gibson county to be exact. He told me his dad was one of the first to buy a one row cotton picker in the county.

I'm 64 and I had a neighbor that used a 1 row international into the late 70's when he retired. We leased his farm in 1979 raised cotton on in R.I.P. JENKIN SWAN

Cotton field really is beautiful, I've never been in one. I think I need to visit one and walk thru it someday.........That Old Picker is Super Cool.

I spent many hours on a International Harvester cotton picker. Ours was mounted on a Super M, high drum, double fan with no power steering. Ours had a single steer tire. We run in first gear, but ours had axle spacers ( high crop) and second gear on second picking. Interesting that modern pickers use the same principle; spindles, differs and an air system. Only real advance is the module/ round baling that has been added. Great job on the restoration!

I grew up on a 40 acre farm as a kid we had a tractor mounted one row cotton picker I think it was mounted on a 200 Farmall had 25 acres of cotton thos were good times we worked hard and ate good
Not fast but problably good as backup. And if it breaks he already knows the machine inside and out.

My Dad’s uncle had a 1962 504 gas tractor. That was a nice little tractor. I have seen a couple pictures of 504 pickers on the web. One was all rusty and the other restored, may have been this one here though.
It's been said that my Grandpa Jim Mansfield bought the first Farmall Cottonpicker in Arbyrd which was in Dunklin County Missouri. His was likely mounted on an M Farmall though.
Cool, Paragould here. Used to go to Arbryd several times a week.
I'm familiar with Dunklin County Missouri. Some of the highest yields in the US with that soil and rarely ever does any of it come up for sale.

I hauled one one of these out of a barn in northeast Pa and brought it to a collector in Mississippi. Once I got close I can’t tell you the pictures people were taking. He owns 2 of them, from what I understand there aren’t very many of these left.

Living in Raeford, I knew Edgar. He had more cotton than Hanes🤣😂🤣. When they were working on the newest self bailing pickers , Edens farm was a tester of one of the only of first 3 prototype pickers

To say it revolutionized the cotton industry is an understatement. If the adoption of the mechanical picker had not been delayed it would have collapsed the southern sharecropper economy and put tens of thousands out of work.
yep, just like when steam power started replacing all the manual labor, for every machine im sure it was several jobs. sad but true, now instead of manual labor you better be smart enough to learn how to run and maintain the machines. or another one is when ford cars were made in enough volume to be cheap for a lot of average worker to afford one, the price of a good horse went to nothing.

We had a 504 D on the farm when I worked for my uncle yrs ago , it was a darelic when he got it , we restored it as a winter project , it sure was good on fuel.

My dad put together the IH catalogs for 40 years from the 1930s until the 1970s.
Growing up, learned about slaves picking cotton in the south east of the US. I moved to southern New Mexico for college to discover it's a popular crop out there.

We use to fit the IH 314 Cotton Picker over the IH M/MD we had/still have.
Is it as simple as turning the ring gear around to reverse the drive of the tractor?

Better shim those bars. I see some spindle wrap on those spindles.
The rubber sweeps always reminded me of brake petal pads. H and M and super M were the favorite tractors to put under the cotton pickers.

Does anyone remember how many pounds of cotton a normal cotton trailer would hold? I'm talking about the days before modules, now I see flatbed trucks carrying 7 John Deere pods or whatever they are called.

I believe that 504 would be a 1964 model. In 1954 IH was still in the letter series.

No, you reverse the gears so it's actually going backwards in forward gears.
