We had a Massey-Harris-Ferguson #3 baler. It was a bear to get going every year. Once it ran, it ran great. But it was a slow speed unit. The neighbours had a JD 14T. You could bale our field in an afternoon with that thing. Our #3 would take a day and a half with all the issues it caused at the start of the season.

Those colors are pure 1950's art deco, combined with the curves of the top and the stylized grill - this is one nice tractor! I would keep it in my living room!

Grew up up on a farm in South Dakota in fifties and sixties and we used a lot of old equipment, all our bailers were square. As far as Massey Ferguson I think we had one of those tractors but John Deere was our favorite.

I've got a1956 Ferguson 40 Hi Clearance like that one, except mines got a wide front and the fender mounted headlights. I modified a Knoedler seat for it, because the original seat set right on the transmission housing and rode like a tank. I also swapped the input gears in the transmission for a 40 utility, Now it will run 20 in high gear.

That baler! a very informative visual record of it, thankyou. Seeing the drive layout and using the A.P.U.H. Can see the heritage somewhere - IH Shaft drives, ( & Knotters as you say ) Crankshaft unlike other Massey balers from UK, etc. Bit of work to convert a current baler to side mount. Yes Politics in the workplace, eh? where did it take Massey-Ferguson?

Born on a farm in U.K. in 1941. Learned to drive a tractor, Fordson of course, at a very early age. Remember the day the new little Fergie arrived, TD 20. With magic three pint linkage, plough, discs, trailer etc. Magic ! . But never saw or knew of a Ferguson 40 or a Ferguson bailer .Moved onto Fordson New Majors ! and an International bailer with it's own Coventry Climax engine. That bailer looked really good , many ways similar to the International, maybe contravened a few patents, hence the decision to destroy them., maybe. Perhaps it needed to be needed to be easily converted to a trailer type just for moving from field to field, small gates in the UK then. But extremely interesting video.

There's a lot of missed ties behind the baler at the end of the video. The baler is cool, but 13 feet wide overall and only such a tiny pickup? It just wasn't going to be a success, and maybe they canned it to save face. It's still a really cool concept, and that Ferguson 40 is just sweet, sweet, sweet!

I've never seen a baler like this. I've worked with farm equipment all my life and this one's new to me. New Holland made a self propelled baler a few years ago. I'm just wondering what the advantage of this style is?

    • @mfranzusan3014
      @mfranzusan3014 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It was probably just a purchase incentive at the dealers would could buy the tractor and get the baler attachment at a fraction of the MSRP. But as they spoke about in the video, the application was not advantageous. Too wide to fit through a gate, prohibitive maintenance to detach and re-attach. Essentially you have a tractor that only runs 1-3 times a year depending how often you bale.

There is a farm nearby that has a barn full of 1950's tractor "attachments" (I'm not a farmer so I don't know the proper name). The machines are in amazing condition, considering they are in the upper northeast US. The paint is near factory, a little faded maybe. The farmer died recently and I have no idea what will happen to all those machines, they must be obsolete. Kinda bums me out to think they will be junked.

Imagine if you could get your tractors in a multitude of colors much in the way you can get cars.
You could finagle that thing through a 10 foot gate I bet.
    1. Head Off center into the gate until the baler comes up bout as close as it can to the fence.
    2. turning as sharp as possible with that narrow front pull in until your inline with the fence.
3.Back up to the other edge of the gate.
4.Turn as sharp as you can away from the baler and it should swing right in.

Massey Harris recalled these balers after the 1953 merger with Ferguson they also recalled the Ferguson Ltx tractors which were an experimental 60 hp English Ferguson tractor and all 12 of them were chopped up, some say they wanted to destroy Harry Ferguson’s further developments as they superior to Massey’s own products

@@matthias18 Sounds like it was the opposite, they were too good. I can't name names, but I've seen this more than a few times in person. A company buys out a good product, starts making them real cheap but charges the same price which gives them a bigger profit margin. Often takes a while for the customers to catch on, and sometimes customers are just so tied into using that product that the can't just up and quit using it.

Contraption. Harry was a smart man and invented many useful things but as this guy said, it was too wide to get thru a gate. Knotters from another company. Ferguson never had the money to fully develop many of his ideas. Then look at the 97 and 98 tractors. Makes you wonder what or who the problem really was.
