My wife also said that a possible use for those birds you saw caught out in the fields was probably not for eating, but for the custom of saying a prayer at a pagoda. In many of the cities, you can go to one of these areas, pay for a bird, say a prayer for a loved one you have lost, and set the prayer free by releasing the bird you bought to fly away with your prayer.

Harald, A couple of things. First I was in Vietnam for almost four years during the Vietnam war with the Americans. I lived in the hamlets and villages and spoke the language. What you are calling “slash and burn” farming practices really are not. The rice paddy region you are traveling through have been there for thousands of years. The farming and cultivation practices have not changed much in that time. Yes, you are seeing burning in and around the rice fields but this is normal. You are there at the end of the rice harvest. Once the rice is harvested the people pull all of the rice plants, place them on the dikes and areas between the paddies to dry. Once it is dried the vegetation is then burned. The paddies are then drained and the resulting ash from the burned vegetation is then distributed on the soil of the drained paddies. This ash is called Potash and is a valuable, natural fertilizer necessary for the next rice crop. They also use a lot of fish meal they make to provide the necessary nitrogen as well as animal waste for the same purpose. It’s a natural process that keeps the rice paddy fields producing year after year while slash and burn usually refers to clear cutting of forest regions that leaves the area subject to erosion and useless for further propagation. Another is the vine you got caught on when you went atop the irrigation gate tower. Any Vietnam Veteran who traversed the countryside and the jungles of Vietnam is very familiar with that particular vibe. We called them “wait a minute vines”. Simply because we had to stop for a minute and painfully extract ourselves from the clutches of the aggravating plant. As for your herb experience, well I won’t comment about that! Lol
Thanks for the explanation on the farming practice. Too often do we Westerners assume other cultures don't know what they're doing but it's actually just a different type of science. Certainly work for them through hundreds of not thousands of years.
hatmurica , You are welcome. Even though my time in Vietnam was under difficult circumstances I took pains to try and understand the people and their customs. They are a deeply religious people, their primary dirty being the very land itself. They believed their very existence was rooted in the very soil of Vietnam. To be sure they held many superstitions related to that but everything they did was to honor the earth under their feet. Contrary to popular belief, rice is a very difficult crop to grow. Knowing that each and every rice plant was put through a ritualistic process that required many things, not the least of which was the blessing of the local village shaman’s blessing before the rice was actually planted into the paddy. The paddies themselves also had to be blessed and the water that flowed into them. It was then a matter of the farmer and his family following a strict regimen of customs in order to reap a bountiful harvest. If the rice failed, as it often did, someone in the family was deemed inadequate and restitution had to made to the shaman and the village chief. It sounds severe but in the end all usually ended well with the entire village coming together in support. I found the Vietnamese people to be absolutely fascinating and did all I could to support them. It wasn’t their fault that war had become a way of life in their country. I am pleased now that Vietnam has come fairly full circle. Yes, they have a communist government that is very restrictive but overall the restrictions have been lifted somewhat so now, with an open market society, the Vietnamese are living mostly peaceful lives and also enjoying the tourism industry that has been implemented in the region.
Blue Rose mostly for pet market, especially serve middle and rich classes in urban areas. You can see the farmers are careful to not hurt them; if it’s for a meal, they don’t care.
Dale Griggs don’t want to open a new online warfare here, but communism in Vietnam is always heavily mixed with patriotism and nationalism-the two things against Marxist communism ideology as well, not counted Confucianism in. So from beginning, it’s not a regime fights for ideal society and proletarian revolution like USSR or China but independence from French colonists supported by American, then total reunification after your country decided to meddle in, “revived” French puppet regime and officially divided us into 2 parts. Can you imagine how bad it is if British Empire backed Confederate States during your Civil War? Except for this one, it’s never a civil or proxy war but direct conventional one which resulted over 58 thousand of your men died and millions of our soldiers, civilians. Your thinking “oh, there are good guys and bad guys and we came there to protect their freedom” is too naive, even now you’re a veteran. Your military did many war crimes on us but you don’t know or try not to hear. Past is past, no one can change what happened, we already forgave you but never forget. And don’t mess with us again.

@@elestromusicgamesfun1101 vietnam has everything to be honest. Beach, mountains, night life, good weather cold and hot. Everything literally.

For me Your travel and tour videos are like windows or can I say wormholes ( that of relativity theory) to these worlds of different countries, the people there, their life and the places out there. I have seen many tour or travel videos on TH-cam but yours are always interesting , perhaps because you like to interact with people their become a part in daily life.. as for those ppl in the country you are visiting, who don't know you as a youtuber would probably think that you live there except for the language barrier. I should probably say it's more like a movie based on true events.. your camera is like our eyes thanks for showing us the places and the people there. Most of all I look ke the way you take time and willingness to help genuine and needy people whenever you can . God bless you with good health and happy life .. keep it up..
It may be many many years until I can have my dream trip around Asia, if ever, since unemployment and stuff..., I’m just so happy to view the beauties of these countries through your videos Phuc Haroldo, many thanks.
wow! i love this content and theres nobody better than Haraldo to bring it to us!
Like the Trudeau reference Harold! He will regret that stupid move forever lol. Canada says Hi! Good work!
Canadian ehh
Looks like he won’t regret it.
Wow what an amazing place! beautiful scenery, lovely, friendly people, simple life.
"you're rice, may be made from the soil of a dead man" Progressive, Greta approves :p
Another great video. Cant help but laugh out loud!
The hotel people are so nice in Vietnam they literally make sure their tourists that stay are safe and they check up just in case so they don’t get ripped off
I've been watching your adventures, enjoying all of your travels through out Asia... keep on traveling Harold
Love the Vietnamese speaking style. So distinct and beautiful.
Another very enjoyable video Harald you do it so well thank you xx
He's the only guy you can listen to refer to himself in the third person and not mind it at all LOL
