I graduated from Eastern University. Everything in the photos is absolutely correct. It was an incredible mansion. Complete with the log cabin shown and a mansion for the son and the daughter across from each other on hills overlooking a lake. Very interesting place with lots of history.
What a lovely setting, I really like the way the architect designed the house and other buildings to fit into the landscape. And what a nice story about him openly sharing the estate with his neighbors, so all could enjoy.
I think the most important thing that jumped out to me about the large home is how it felt like a real home and not just a huge bunch of rooms. Sometimes the houses back then were just a show place and not very homey, this house felt like a real home and like each room was together and you didn't need to go somewhere else in the entire structure to feel like you were back in the home again because the entire place felt like one complete home.
This has to be one of the more thoughtfully designed and selflessly used mansions you’ve highlighted on your channel. This house is one of the most attractive ones I’ve seen here. Thank you, Ken, for bringing it forth for our enjoyment! 🙂
Sam Walton and Charles Walton are not related, at least I couldn't find anything that said they're related. I'm pretty sure that's what you're referring to??
Any family with a beautiful historic estate they no longer want for pities sake, do not give it to a university. Oh, and I loved the breakfast room with the fountain. Also, really neat that Mr. Walton truly shared his wealth with his community.
It must be a Pennsylvania thing for rich people to share their grounds with neighbors... Milton Hershey did the same thing - eventually becoming Hersheypark
And that is how Pennsylvania also got Longwood Gardens that is very near Walmarthon... if you have not done an episode on Longwood Gardens - you should look into that one... it is stunning
I am very impressed by the hospitality of the Walton family in their willingness to share their lovely estate with their neighbors. People like that, with or without money, are very rare, indeed. It is a pity that Charles Walton, himself, didn't get to enjoy more time, living in this dream home. May he RIP.

My favorite "feature" is Charles Walton, who was obviously a man with integrity, generosity, and humility. I hope he has a seat in heaven with his Creator.
While "most of the grounds" have been adapted for use by the University, virtually all of the buildings still stand. The water mill is still there, and the stone dock still stands in the water. It's a hike to get from the water up to the main house, but you're doing it on steps put down by the original owner.
It’s sad that Mr. Walton was only able to enjoy his paradise for three years. He was a truly benevolent person, especially for allowing his property to be enjoyed by others. The house was a beautiful mix of styles. It had plenty of light and he didn’t over decorate as was common during the period. My favorite rooms were the breakfast and pool rooms. When do we get an update on your remodeling project?

Community minded, I'll bet, What does that even mean, a 6 day 60 hour work week, half day off for Christmas, ..... sharing the grounds probably meant opening it up to the public one day a year so he could get a tax write off instead of having to pay property tax, this was actually a very common practice for the Uber rich at that time....
Not true. I've lived nearby for 50 years, and when I first moved to the area locals had many stories of skating on the lakes in winter, picnics in summer, etc. Walton and his family truly were community-minded.
It's nice to have a story about a kind and generous rich guy for a change. Glad the house hasn't been destroyed.
