I greatly appreciate the basses' and tenors' contagious looks of intensity and profound joy the whole time they sing this piece! The power of those altos and the sweetness of the sopranos, as well! Props to all 9 of you, this is a truly heavenly and prayerful rendition of such a precious piece of sacred polyphony.
Exactly! This has caught my attention as well. It's as if, for a few minutes, they forgot the camera and sang as if there was only that piece of music in the universe. Beautiful. Also, kudos to the recording engineer for the perfect balance between voices and the exact dose of reverb.
I cry EVERY time I hear this piece, but I especially am pierced at 4:18 when the sopranos keep that note going before the "amen." It kills me every. single. time.

it's sad that you say dreaded. this kind of attitude has perpetuated a straight-tone, homogenized sterility in choral music today. there are very few choirs now that know how to effectively use vibrato. perfectly blended sounds get BORING after a while. somehow the anglican boychoir sound became the standard for all of choral music lately and it's to its detriment. choirs like BYU Voces 8 Chanticleer Kings Singers and this ensemble do ONLY straight tone. Choirs even sing music from the Orthodox and Russian traditions like anglican boychoirs despite its historical inaccuracy.
Beautifully balanced, sensitively performed, thoughtfully conducted, and majestically voiced. Every part of this performance cut right to the marrow, and we're all better for hearing it. Folks, if you're looking for a great Byrd's "Ave...": here. Here; you found it.
This is the most beautiful and best performances of this masterpiece I have ever heard. And I have sung it in an excellent church choir, but we were not quite THAT good. This choir;s tone quality is stunning and incredibly lovely -- so pure and beautiful. And the tempi were perfect for this size of group and the space they were performing in, and the conductor held tge ends of the major sections for just the right amount of time, and had the perfect length of breaks between section. I wojld never have even heard of this group if Yourtube had not put this video as one of the suggested videos after I watched the Gesualdo Six perform Byrd's "Miserere mei". Thank you, Byrd Ensemnble!
Dear Otto, thank you very much for your kindness. We'll soon release the first disc of the ensemble (in february) You can follow us on facebook (facebook.com/ensemblezene/) Hope to meet you in one of our concert! All the best
Agree completely. I first started singing this in high school concert choir. Then, in our community choir which went to Europe in the late '70's (I'm old). This piece has always been one of my favorites from that, or frankly, ANY era. Truly God-inspired writing, IMO. This is about as perfect as it gets.
The absolute best rendition out there of this amazing piece. Perfect in every way, the tempo, blending of voices, acoustics, recording quality, timing, everything. Just stunning.
Beautiful! The best performance of Byrd's Ave Verum Corpus. This is what my choir aspires to when we sing it. We do well, but they are definitely the gold standard.
I thought Sir David Willcock's 1965 recording with King's College Cambridge could not be equalled. I was wrong. Beautiful in every way. And though traditionalists may balk at the hand gestures, I think they add to the singers' involvement and contribute to both the precision and the emotion of this fine performance. Thank you.
That smile at 3:38 - I reckon he's marvelling at the polphony, 'Ah Byrd...' Particularly that stunningly beautiful tenor line in the mix. It's so exquisite and effortless, there's not much else one can do.
I appreciate the singers movements while performing this piece. They give themselves to it, and don't get bogged down in the exquisite polyphony. Just the right forward motion. Perfect!

Lovely rendition. I had the privilage of performing this piece in choir, at that time, doing the tenor lines. Loved the production too. It cracked me up though, seeing the folks turn the music pages, as if they were "reading" them. That whole choir knows this beautiful song & their part deep into their cells. That was fine showmanship. What is real was their tuning into the nuances of the choir director (who is brilliant btw). The choir was tuned into him like a radar. Lovely to hear & watch. Bravo!
