The problem wasn't just that Jason and Catherine didn't have chemistry. The pairing completely stunted Katherine's story and development. She just seemed to become all about Tommy. The show also ramped up the damsel aspect. Katherine deserved better, pairing her with Tomny just made her character seem more and more like a replacement in every way for Kimberly.
Wow really? I love a damsel in distress story, especially if the woman is fawning over the man. No, this is not sarcasm. I really feel this way. Traditional roles are the best.
It was so great getting to meet you and your mom yesterday at the jdf signing. I love this video you did. I hated that they broke up Tommy and Kimberly. Especially the way the writers did it. Good work on your case study.
I think Kat Hillard wanted Tommy the whole time, and she encouraged Kimberly to continue to do Gymnastics so she can have Tommy...I just don't trust Kat Hillard, and she probably wrote that letter.
@DC-MarvelGirl1997 she was like that when she was under Rita's spell. She said he may be yours now Kimberly but not for long and then tore the picture of Tommy and Kim in half
@keristrickland2208 under Rita’s spell, something that wasn’t shown to leave behind any permanent effects at least in the show because the show only barely scratched the surface.
I love that you point out how Kimberly wasn't the only one that looked bad in the snow arc. I agree the all looked not the best. Throwing Kimberly under the bus to prop them was the major fault. Tommy just walked around looking lost and then just seemed to latch to Katherine because she was there. That isn't healthy. Katherine had good intentions but she she became somewhat obsessive about his love life.
There are many things that didn't make sense 1. If Kim and Jason had a relationship why was he dating Emily in zeo. Jason's last episode in zeo they still were dating the. 2nd where was Kat during Dino thunder. There was no hint he was married to anybody
Sister dear, thank you so much for your phenomenal video on how terribly messy Tommy's and Kat's romantic relationship was built. Ever since rewatching Power Rangers, I have come to thoroughly appreciate Tommy and Kimberly as a couple because they have seen each other's best, worst, and ugliest sides without flinching, and there is that undeniable fact that Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson had superb onscreen chemistry for all three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Furthermore, Tommy and Kimberly believed in each other and were constantly rooting for each other even when the chips were down. In short, I will always remain with Team Tomberly for the rest of my life. Power Rangers Zeo may have gone some steps forward in the Ranger Suit change department as well as more ambitious stories, but it went several steps backward in terms of establishing Tommy and Kat as the new couple. I understand it was about Tommy moving on from Kimberly because teenage relationships are fleeting, but the writers threw whatever plausible chemistry and endearing bond Tommy and Kimberly had out the window, thus taking this amazing couple's bond for granted. Kat became nothing more than just the backup girl for Tommy when she clearly deserved better than this. It did not help matters that the whole TomKat agenda continued to be pushed all the way up to Turbo. Hence, I think Kat is better off with Jason Lee Scott because they do have their moments where they understood each other. Moreover, Jason and Kat as a couple do have way more appeal when it comes to a virile and strong warrior king like Jason making sweet love to a lovely and gracious princess like Kat. All in all, aside from being with Team Tomberly until my dying days, I would gladly remain with Team Kason until I transcend the flesh. I do agree that the good news about how Ranger romances were written was that the writers got the hint when Power Rangers in Space came to fruition, as engendered by Ashley's loving bond with Andros, especially when they got to know each other on a deeper level and thoroughly understood each other. Power Rangers Lost Galaxy was not too big on the ships, but I recognize that there have been fanfics, fan art, and fan-related works in which Leo has been paired with either Maya, Kendrix, or Karone. As for me, I have been more of a Leo x Maya person. Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue definitely had a strong dynamic with Carter and Dana not only in terms of their professions involving saving lives but also in terms of interpersonal chemistry brimming with trust and encouragement. Wes Collins and Jen Scotts from Power Rangers Time Force were, are, and will always be the best Ranger couple of all time. I would even argue that Tommy and Kimberly were vindicated by Wes and Jen growing as a couple, learning more about each other, and building a romance based on trust, patience, unconditional love, and heaps of courage.
Girl you knocked it out of the park. My God, I was 9 going on 10, when Douglas Sloan, one of the worst writers during the Zordon Era (1993 - 1998) wrote that bullshit 3-part episode arc in "Zeo". It still pisses me off to this day.
The main problem is we never really saw them together. Plus we saw Tommy in love and he was devoted and emotional. We didnt see him like that with Katherine. In turn the relationship didnt help the delevolpment of Katherine's character. Her story became more about Tommy and I feel like we didnt get to see her develop or have focus stories. Honestly when it comes down to it the chemistry wasnt there, alot of their scenes felt overly forced. "Hawaii Zeo" comes to mind. I find it hard to ship a couple that we never really saw as a couple. They were mostly treated as an afterthought, then the show would drop they fet married. She is absent in Dinothunder. Even now it feels forced when they bring up their marriage or son.
Great video. Lots of good points. Just a couple of flaws in it, though. The other guy couldn't have been Jason for a few reasons. The world peace conference was in Switzerland, whilst the pan global games were held in Florida. In power rangers zeo, Jason gets a girlfriend called Emily. Also, in the boom! Comics reveals the truth about the guy Kimberly allegedly dumped Tommy for. Turns out there was no mystery guy. She was struggling to cope with life without being a power ranger and felt she couldn't maintain a long distance relationship with Tommy and made up a dear John letter. Still, a lazy way to start a Tommy and Katherine relationship and they could've used more chemistry
The Boom! Comics was a continuation of the events that transpired during "Zeo". What I'm trying to say is, the writers who wrote "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink" series in 2016, attempted to justify Douglas Sloan's actions. That's the jackass writer who set that whole "Dear John" bullshit into action in 1996. P.S.: He never shipped Tommy & Kimberly so he couldn't wait to break them up.
Great video! And great overall breakdown of the story behind this romance, as well as Tommy and Kimberly. I didn't know those details about the Turbo movie. I agree. If that was their way of resolving Tommy and Kimberly's story, that was dumb. And it ensures the foundation of Tommy's relationship with Kat was always shaky, at best. There's just something shallow about building one romance on the ruins of another. It gives the impression that two people are only together because one felt sorry for the other or one just needed to be with someone to deal with the pain. The way the relationship is framed gives the impression that Tommy's relationship with Kat was what got him over his relationship with Kimberly. And that's just disrespectful because it basically tuns Kat into a rebound girl. And she deserves better than that. There's a lot more to be said about the failures of this relationship. But I think you've summed them up beautifully. Thanks for making this. Please do more videos like this! They're very enjoyable. 😊
I don't really get the rebound feeling from it. It could be viewed as a rebound romance, or Tommy and Kat just naturally grew more organically connected over time because Kat cared about what Tommy was going through and wanted to be there for him. And her commitment to standing by him and caring about his well-being is proof that she liked him for the right reasons, and I don't think he's bad for needing someone to comfort him after a breakup. Just because he fell for Kat so soon after Kimberly doesn't mean Kat is a rebound. It could just mean that Tommy found the right woman for him, which is supported by the fact that he and Kat went the distance and have a happy life together in current PR stories.
You made some good points here. I do like Tommy amd Kat being an item, even though the original chemistry with Kimberly will always stand out to me. But, I have to agree that the writers could've done better. I see what they were going for and all, but still. On a side note, I met Catherine Sutherland back in 2018, and I agree that she's a lovely person. I remember her saying, "I can't believe the franchise is turning 25. But, that's alright, you're only 15, 16?" Then we both shared a good laugh when I told her I was turning 31 the following month!
I don’t know. I feel like people only dislike this couple because of their bias of liking Kimberly instead and liking Kimberly with Tommy. But I’m in the camp of I feel like Kat was better as a girlfriend for Tommy in every way. Kimberly is like that high school girl you go out with. It’s a good relationship but it doesn’t last. Kat is the girl you marry. I don’t see why people think she was just a replacement and it was badly written. I think it was just fine. Let’s not act like we haven’t been dumped in weird ways before. It’s reality. I’ve heard people get dumped by text which is basically the same as a letter, heard people get dumped by a person just completely ghosting out of nowhere and I’ve heard people get dumped by someone else telling them. So getting dumped weird and horribly happens in real life so the letter isn’t really bullshit in my opinion. And I’m glad that in the cannon Tommy and Kat do get married and have a son.
OMG!! I agree with everything that you said. The hole situation was a disaster. It ruin everything for me. I stop watching the show. It's amazing how fans can know the characters better than the writers or maybe they just don't care about doing justice to the show and their characters.
Three problems that you and everyone else that covers Tommy and Kim vs Tommy and Kat. As well as Jason. 1) like it or not people end relationships in that manner( dear John letter) all the time. 2) the Romance angle with Jason and Kim was not supposed to mean Jason was the guy in Florida. It was done to be an explanation as to why the guy is absent and Emily who Jason is dating at the end of Zeo were not there. And it was literally edited out and lost. And 3) Tommy and Kat’s start. Their attraction was always their. With their good looks and connection because of Rita. Also the Story No business like Snow business takes place over time, in fact I believe it supposed to cover several weeks. And she attempts to set him up with a snowboarder played Sarah Brown from VR Troopers. You seem young so please, please close your eyes and think about what you saw in High School. Couples together one minute , broken up the next and with others. It’s high school and it’s fairly accurate. And on a personal not “Men and Women can be friends without dating” and Kim and Jason had been friends for years, so why would it be strange that they are hanging out and planning to surprise their friends with Kim’s visit which is officially in the film not trashed, cut, and lost forever. Also when in the film did they have any moment to talk. The only face to face Kim and Tommy get is when she’s mind controlled and the rest is in mid battle. Not really the time for that and given that Jason and Kim are former Rangers they know this. So why would there be any acknowledgment of that. Other than Tommy trying to reach Kim, who he clearly doesn’t want to fight so that she can be freed from the spell by Larego.
I agree with you on this. The way I see it is when kim left she intended to come back and take back the pink ranger mantle one day. Then life happened she lived a life outside of waiting for Zordon to alert them about a monster attack and preferred that life. Then their was the difference in their roles Kimberly was the heart of the og she loved them and they loved her she bound them together. Kats role was the healer she mended them and supported her team in what ever they needed. She was a better fit for Tommy then Kim was after he became the leader. Tommy needed someone who would be there for him. The way I see it Kim and Tommy grew apart as he went from bad boy with a good heart to the leader that everyone looked too.
Also, I have to mention: How would you all feel if I went back and I redid my Who Is Tommy Oliver? video, as well as my Top 10 Versions of Jean Grey video? In hindsight, the audio on both of those videos was terrible because I filmed them long before I realized I could use Voice Memos or had access to a decent microphone. I can update them with better quality animation, audio, and music in the background. Or are you okay with how they are as is? ALSO, FYI, The information about Jason and Kimberly; that was fan theory on my part based off my assumptions regarding the moment where it shows Jason and Kimberly hugging, insinuating they MIGHT be a couple, but the writers never confirmed nor denied it . . . so I guess it's just up to us to fill in the missing pieces; another example of bad plot holes from the shows the movies.
agree I don’t think that would have happen in like a day you need time to get over a boyfriend in the real world.. if you read power rangers fan fiction there some Kim and Tommy read. It very good.
If they continue Once and Always, and decide to write out JDF the same way they did Thuy Trang (perhaps off camera would be better), that could be a logical impetus that brings Amy Jo Johnson's Kimberly back into the fold, showing that she still had special feelings for him and she could have a lot of intense and revealing dialogue with Kat. You know what? I'd go with the Jason and Kimberly romance and have both of them show up and come to grips with how they broke Tommy's heart and didn't handle it well. I think Amy Jo would be up for the acting exercise that would be required if the writers really wanted to make the dynamic between Jason, Kimberly, and Kat intense and interesting in a more adult way. The newly mentioned son of Tommy and Kat could be introduced and provide an outside perspective.
This couple should have never happened. Kat was a terrible ranger and boring character. Honestly it’s even confirmed in the Boom Comic series that Kim did still love Tommy and she was hurt that he was suddenly with Kat. The girl who took EVERYTHING from her (if you think about it). Every time I see Kat and Tommy together is makes my blood boil. Kat and Tommy in no way had the same connection with Tommy and the rest of the team. The actress is really sweet but the character wasn’t very good to me. And there was zero chemistry between the two.
Don't hate me but I love Catherine Sutherland. She was an excellent replacement for Amy Jo Johnson. Remember the real culprit.: Douglas Sloan He was the one who wrote that bullshit in "Zeo". Payback's a bitch though. To commemorate "Valentine's Day", the official Power Rangers TH-cam channel listed the Top 10 Ranger Romances. Tommy & Kat are not on that list. That's a major f**k you to Douglas Sloan, especially during the 30th anniversary year. Before quitting "Power Rangers" in the early 2000s, he had written for the show for over a decade. Here's the link to the video: th-cam.com/video/vna1UIXKitM/w-d-xo.html
I'm definitely late to the game on this video, but if this season were made in more recent times, then Adam and Tanya would have been the central couple. They were by far more interesting and had a better build up with their chemistry. It kind of has retroactive bad optics when the main romances were prioritized over the more interesting interracial pairings. But '90s are gonna '90s
Go OFF sis. My childhood was fucked up over this. I loved Kat as Pink II and I hate she got so much hate for this. It's like they lazily said, Green/White has to be with Pink. Kat could have easily been written for Rocky or Adam. 😂
Absolutely. The dude who wrote that shitty 3-part episode arc in "Zeo", realized on the eve of Valentine's Day that karma is a bitch. The official "Power Rangers" TH-cam channel decided to do a Top 10 video of the best romances to commemorate the 30th anniversary. Tommy & Katherine are NOT on that list. That's two major F**k you's toward Douglas Sloan. Before quitting "Power Rangers", he had worked on the show for over a decade. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/vna1UIXKitM/w-d-xo.html
Well, I just randomly click on this video because I researched for Tommy (my favorite character in PR universe btw :P) but right now I think it was a good decision for me to do! You know, as a guy I never really interested in romance featured in tv shows... however, in this case I kinda feel I really liked both the Tommy-Kim and the Tommy-Kat relationships. Because like You said it felt natural to me for Tommy and Kim to start loving each other and as they were so likable together straight from Tommy's debut (1.17 - Green with Evil part 1) to Kim's exit (3.25 - The Different Shade of Pink part 3), really! On the other hand, when Kat debuted (3.17 - A Ranger Catastrophe part 1) and first met Tommy I just can't help but thought they had the chemistry as well (basically what You said in the video) and while I also despised the way Kim dumped him via a "Dear John" letter (Zeo 15. - There's No Business Like Snow Business part 1), after his brief and unsuccesful flirt with that snowboarder girl, Heather... I was just happy when Kat "jumped" in Heather's place in the date to make him a little more happy in that three-parter's end. But the main point is: yeah, Kim would never do that to him and ESPECIALLY NOT with Jason (because Tommy & Jason are like brothers in my eyes regardless this so called beef between JDF and ASJ) so this was really dumb and disrespectful to Kimberly Hart's character! And yes, the way the producers managed the whole Tommy-Kat marriage is terrible (I read the "Soul of the Dragon" graphic novel what centers around their son, J.J. and depict Tommy's - maybe - last fight as a Power Ranger and so feautred Kat as well and believe it or not: I was informed about the marriage from that novel because in the show - not counting the Zeo "Christmas special" episode A Season to Remember whit that flash-forward - it isn't referenced at all or I just didn't notice it in the 25th Anniversary episode "Dimensions in Danger"). Oh and one more thing: personally I could like a Jason-Kim relationship IF it would have depicted correctly! Thanks for reading it and sorry, sometimes I just write too much, I know :D P.S.: I just subscribed^^
Tommy and Kat’s relationship is not mentioned in Dimension’s in Danger. The reference is in what is seen. Watch closely when everyone is leaving through the portals Tommy and Kat leave together while holding hands. Also Kat didn’t jump into the 3rd Date attempt with the snowboarder. The Snowboarder left because Ranger duties kept pulling Tommy away and the last time was the final one. He comes back and the snowboarder is gone and Kat comes in apologizing for the other girl leaving, and they share a dance. Nothing, outside the flashforward, is ever mentioned or seen. It’s not overly apparent they are even a couple until Turbo. Jason is literally seen on a date with a girl named Emily in the last episode of Zeo. All we see in the Turbo movie is Jason hanging out with an old friend, in this case Kim. They even mentioned surprising the others with Kim before being kidnapped by Divatox. Also the “Dear John” letter has existed since the start of written language and relationships. It was also the only thing they could do because at that time Amy was gone and not coming back. They needed something to close the relationship. Is it great no, but it is real. High School relationships end this way and worse. There is no and I mean no Romantic chemistry between Jason and Kim. If I was to put him with a female Ranger it would’ve been Trini. There was just. Something there under the surface. Tommy has a strong connection with Kat that comes not just from attraction, but from a shared pain, being mind controlled by Rita, and the closeness of working together. Was it always well written no, but this PR not Shakespeare. Kim and Tommy are always well written either. But every relationship is different and should not be compared to any other
Apparently one of the top dogs who oversees the franchise must have seen this. Tommy & Katherine isn't even in the Top 10 of Ranger Romances, which is featured on the official "Power Rangers" TH-cam Channel! Talk about getting the middle finger twice on the same day during the 30th anniversary year. Before quitting "Power Rangers", Douglas Sloan had over a decade of experience working on the show. Not to mention the video was published on the eve of "Valentine's Day". I'm laughing my ass off. No better for his stupid ass. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/vna1UIXKitM/w-d-xo.html
You said everything I was thinking. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. It devastated me as a fan to the point I stopped watching. Turbo was exciting to see Kimberly but we were all wanting that Tommy and Kim reunion.
I like both Kat and Kimberly. I always thought they had kim and Tommy break up because many teenage relationships dont last into adulthood. I do think Tommy and Kat make a great couple.

Get over her " that quickly". You do realize that very few people stick with their highschool sweethearts. I agree it was out of character for Kim but it's not at all unrealistic. It was a bad decision but at the time, she was done with the show and the writers had to move on. They knew the girls watched the show for the romance as well as the action.
Just like the writers approached Amy Jo Johnson to appear in "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie", they could have did the same during "Zeo". While conducting a behind the scenes interview on the set of "Turbo", Amy said Katherine had stolen Kimberly's boyfriend. In numerous Q&A's, Amy expressed that she didn't know that the writers demonized Kimberly's character until after she had filmed "Turbo". Newly appointed executive producer Douglas Sloan, was never onboard with Tommy & Kimberly's relationship, so of course he wouldn't approach Amy about making several guest appearances in "Zeo". That's why he's listed as one of the worst writers during the Zordon Era (1993 - 1998).
I completely agree, I never understood the hype about these two! Tommy and Kat had nothing like Kim and Tommy did!!
Kimberly and tommy was was the best relationship
Also Amy Jo Johnson, and Jason David Frank were really close in real life.
He was close with Catherine Sutherland as well.

She was a rebound. If Kim came back, Tommy would've dropped Cat like a bad habit
@@keristrickland2208 Exactly! That part! Usually the person that didn't break up usually will rebound/go back to their Ex-boyfriend/Ex-Girlfriend.
I don’t know. I don’t think Kat is that cruel that just doesn’t seem like something she’d do to somebody.
@DC-MarvelGirl1997 she was like that when she was under Rita's spell. She said he may be yours now Kimberly but not for long and then tore the picture of Tommy and Kim in half

Also I agree with this video 100%
Remember the real culprit.: Douglas Sloan
He was the one who wrote that bullshit in "Zeo". Here's the link to the video: th-cam.com/video/vna1UIXKitM/w-d-xo.html
i agree Tommy and Kat felt forced, and i don't think Jason and Kim were a thing.
Agreed. Ntm, Austin St. John had said he would've preferred Trason (Trini and Jason) being a couple.
Maybe rocky but i liked tanya and adam storyline
@@amandagrothmann308 Yeah. They were very cute. Much like Billy & Aisha.
Billy was a good fit for Kat, they were both quiet and intellectual, like him and Trini before she left.
I miss having this the show
Well, I just randomly click on this video because I researched for Tommy (my favorite character in PR universe btw :P) but right now I think it was a good decision for me to do! Thanks for reading it and sorry, sometimes I just write too much, I know :D
P.S.: I just subscribed^^
But every relationship is different and should not be compared to any other
Kat and tommy did not have chemistry.
Agree with you in every way related to the Kat/Tommy/Kim/Jason romance and would add Ashley and Andros (from space) to the good couples list.. 😅

I enjoyed Tommy and Kimberly, I enjoyed Kat and Tommy, but that letter was bullshit.
Kimberly could keep up with Tommy in the fights, Kat was more if the calm type like Billy.
Thanks
Katherine and Tommy are a couple, I knew it!
Jason and Kim are a couple? I thought Jason's love was Trini.
I think they should have lgbt couple
Dear John, this isn't working. Thanks. Bugs Bunnny.
( Bugs' letter to the tv repair man John)
