    Hi Martin, a very good point you raised about checking out fitters, I started caravanning last year and had a local guy install my towbar which was a towsure detachable towbar. The first couple of times I used it it was fine then it seized and couldn’t get it to locate, phoned the installer who kindly charged me to return it and lost my weekend away, got it back 2 weeks later and lost all confidence in it and had trouble with the electrics. I took my car back to the dealer as I thought I had a problem with the car to be told that it was such a bad install that my warranty on the car was now void. Changed the car and had a Westfalia fitted by an approved dealer and had no problems with it to date, a very good make.
    Keep up the good work👍🏻

      Hi Kevin, thats the problem with fitters of the internet, they are mostly sub contractors and you can never get the same fitter back if there is a problem. The key is having the correct wiring loom for your car, some fitters just put the cheapest loom on to make more money out of the job. Glad your are happy with your Westfalia, thanks for comments and watching, Martin

    I've had after market fitted fixed, factory fitted electric and detachable tow bars over the years. Next time - detachable will be my preferred option. Great vlog, really enjoyed it.

    Hi Martin, excellent make of tow bar Westfalia. I agree that it's always best to go for the specific wiring. A lot of people don't realise this and a lot of cars these days require coding to tell it, it has towing equipment fitted. It activates the trailer stability programme or in Ford's case trailer sway control - a safety assistance system. You've made me look at the Kuga on the Ford website and the factory option of an electric retractable towbar is £625. A no brainer if someone was buying brand new with the intentions of towing. Last year a neighbour bought a 2014 Kuga. It has a factory fitted detachable and when the electrics are plugged in various changes take place on the car as it knows a trailer has been plugged in. Thanks for sharing. Rob

      Hi Rob, Not sure why some fitters don't give you that information about the wiring loom, to me that's the key to a good fit. Newer cars are like computers and like you say everything changes with the car when it's towing. The extra cost of the correct loom will save you money in the future, no garage visits as your car isn't working properly! Thanks for watching, Martin

    Nice video Martin, if your an old caravaner like me you’ll remember the affliction know as “Caravaners Knee” this occurred after unhitching on site. You’d remove items from the boot of the car bang your knee on the fixed tow bar and have your nice clean going on holiday trousers covered in grease because you forgot to put the cover on the tow ball. 😂🤣😂 Stay healthy matey.

    Really great vlog that Martin, do you know what, I’ve never actually seen how a detachable towbar works! What a great piece of kit, so easy to use, well made and like you say, you’d never guess the car has a towbar. Worth paying slightly more I think 👍🏻

      Hi mate, When I told Angela the cost of the detachable she swore at me, I was insistent on having it fitted. Now every time we see a Kuga with a fixed tow bar when not towing she says.....that looks ugly on the back of the car! Definitely worth the money, speak soon, Martin

    HI Martin
    the same as you when I was looking for a new Tow Bar I wanted a detachable Tow Bar, however, the price put me off with wiring harness it was costing me well over £700
    so was on eBay and a used one popped up I put in an offer and won it got it delivered and fitted it myself for my car (KIA Sportage) for £110
    it is the same make as the one they first order for you, very similar to the one you have now it was very straight forward to fit and I did the electrics myself as well, buying a car specific 13 pin wiring harness which was about £200 odd pounds so all in all saved about half the price
    good vids m8 keep them coming and stay safe.

    Nice one Martin, v thorough description :) I have the same bar on my VW bus, it was a factory fit option. The (presumably as it’s just a few months old) newer bar has a “slot” on the stem under the ball to pass the breakaway through, have to admit I was nervous having the slot so close to the ball (it was on the bit of the assembly which is permanently attached to the car on our XC60 which I prefer) but it’s easy to use at least. As a person with small hands I have found it little difficult, especially as ours is quite stiff, in that the ball can come loose before the locking nut is fully locked open and thus primed for reattaching. Which can provide a bit of frustration on a second tow if you’re not used to it ;-) yes that’s the voice of experience, trying and failing to make a quick getaway once but now knowing better!

    • @TheCaravanNut
      @TheCaravanNut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Becky, I can’t understand why they didn’t put a breakaway loop on the bar as it’s an integral bit of the hitch. We loop our cable around the towing arm and pull so it’s not loose, I often wonder that if the caravan did become detached whilst towing would the breakaway be able to jump off over the top of the ball. I would prefer a hoop on the car to clip it to.
      Thanks for your comments and support, Martin 🙂

    Great video Martin. We had a guy come out to fit the tow bar on at home (detachable) on my Vauxhall insignia. No problems. Wish I still had that car 😟 but we changed the caravan so the car was no longer legal to pull it. We've got the SsangYong korando with a fixed tow bar. That hurts on the Shins 😖. But it came with the car so not going to change it. 😎👍

      Hi martin. No we bought the car with it fitted. If I'd changed it for the detachable type you have it would cost to much. I just have to remember not to pass to close to it otherwise I swear a lot when I catch my leg 🤞 its only happened twice 🤣

    Towbar on our Freelander saved the car. Idiot ran in to the back of us at traffic lights and harpooned himself , his car was a write off, ours needed a bit of paint on the bumper.
    It was an OEM detachable one but I could never be bothered to take it off.
    The new Tiguan has a fixed one and I've never shinned myself

    Hi Martin 👍🏻 hope you’re all well
    Another good infovlog
    Deff agree with detachable towbars - I’m now almost 66 with both shins still intact !
    I’ve got a Tow Trust fitted by a mobile for around £400 on my 2013 Toyota RAV4- been on about 4 years now and pretty similar to your Westy.
    Keep safe and we will all be back emptying the toilet cassette soon enough !

      Hi Martin 👍🏻
      Just given this vlog another coat of looking at.
      I’ve just changed my car from a RAV4 to a VW Touareg which has a factory fitted
      westfalia towbar like yours
      I had a towtrust previously on the Rav which was pretty good but this westy is pretty good and I was fortunate that the vehicle came with it.
      My only question is where do I fit the breakaway?
      I see on your video you have a flange to connect but on my VW the 13 pin is mounted fixed to the chassis next to the towbar socket
      My guess is I have to loop it around the neck - which I always tried to avoid but can’t see any alternative.
      Also I struggled to get the bar to slot in at first till I read the “Book of Words” and found I had to turn knob and “prime” it before slotting it in
      Thanks as always
      All the best
      Howard

    • @TheCaravanNut
      @TheCaravanNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Horward,
      Nice tow car, we have looked at them in the past. I have to loop the breakaway cable around the bar, there is nowhere to clip it. It’s not ideal but it seems to work.
      As for fitting it, when I take the bar off I leave it in the primed position, not sure if that’s what you are supposed to do but never had a problem. The only downside for me is the cover for the lock, it’s not attached to the bar which is a pain. Surprised I’ve not lost it yet!
      Hope that answers the question, Take care, Martin

      @@TheCaravanNut cheers Martin for quick response
      I only picked it up this morning so I’m now at the messing about in it on the drive stage.
      It’s a 2015 RLine and think it should tow anything- I wanted to change car to future proof a van change .
      When I viewed the car I said to the dealer it’s a pity it’s not got a towbar - so phoned and got a price of about 600 quid
      Went back for second viewing with Sandra and she asked to look on the boot and there in a plastic bag was the tow hitch !
      Like she says I walk around with my eyes shut !!
      Saved me load of brass tho !
      Just need to go to storage park and hitch up and test the electrics
      All the best

    I have a detachable tow bar but it's left in place all the time. To much of a faff for me to take off and put back on. So far I have not banged my legs on it. It was good it was left on the car as a idiot got to close to me in a car park while I was sat in the car and nudged into me. Not damage to my car but he cracked all his front bumper and skirt.

    • @TheCaravanNut
      @TheCaravanNut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would get caravan tyres, you have to make sure the load ratings are correct as the weight is distributed over the 2 wheels. This site has good info
      www.tyresafe.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/caravan-leaflet.pdf
      I would try any tyre place to get them but make sure they are the right ones, your caravan manual should give you the correct tyres.

    Martin, how are you mate, great to see your vids, this vid drew me when I first saw it because I have the same! (bought new car in Feb a Sante Fe and had new towball fitted, a westphallia there was no choice), but it looks good and feels strong, practice fitted to car a few times its ok now but a ballache at first?, not used it yet, one thing I want to know, I was very interested in the actual towball but you did not show it only with its cap?, as you know the ball is or looks painted black, although it seems to be different paint on the actual ball to the other parts and much smoother, what I wanted to know is :-
    1. Should I sandpaper the paint off (towballs are supposed to be shiny steel)
    2. should I leave the paint on as it looks special???.
    you actually put out interesting stuff

    • @colinrimmer789
      @colinrimmer789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryn Yes lightly sand the ball to shiny and wipe it clean with white spirit. If you leave the paint it will contaminate the hitch stabiliser pads and you’ll end up with an annoying grinding squeaking noise. Hitch needs to be dry and clean when the caravan has the hitch stabilisers fitted. Hope this helps.

    • @TheCaravanNut
      @TheCaravanNut  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, No it’s not a swan neck. I think Swan neck bars fit different and are not vertical fit, I may be wrong though. With this in mind you would probably need a bumper cut with a swan neck. I would check with a fitter or phoned Indespension up to check with them. Also as mentioned in the vid make sure you get the wiring loom specific to the Kuga, it can cause all sorts of problems if you don’t. Let me know how you get on, Thanks for comments and watching, Martin 🙂
