    Going by the cannon year one manga I'd also have to argue that he has the alchemist feat because he makes his own poison and tear gas even going so far as to use egg shells to hold them. also it mentioned that he did multi class as a scout meaning having three levels in rogue

      You don't need the rest to make those things by the book. It's what downtime rules in Xanathars guide is for, fun fact! The rest is interesting though! Hope you enjoyed it!

    I actually built this in D&D Beyond while I was watching your video. He's brilliant even without getting to Level 20 (since most campaigns usually only end at level 10 anyways), though personally I'd select Blind Fighting for his Ranger Fighting style rather than Duellist or Defence. Now hear me out, when they first meet Priestess asks him "Do you have some ability that lets you see in the dark?" To which he responds "No, I've just practiced." Blind Fighting I think is the best way to replicate not having Darkvision, but not being totally useless in a fight in the darkness.

    • @HeartLockHex
      @HeartLockHex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      At the time of this videos release, that fighting style wasn't an option on beyond. But yes, it's most assuredly a fantastic option for him!

      Alignment is a finicky thing unfortunately! It all comes down to viewpoint, which is why alot of people in the circles I'm with on the internet don't even bother using it anymore really. If that's what the creators think he is that's awesome though!

      social skills aside, he really is Lawful Good. The first chapter/episode painted him like a jaded emotionless avenger since it's based on Priestess first impression but pretty much anyone he has relationship with kept him on the lawful side, especially his teacher
      hell, he still feel bad for killing the Witch girl years later

  • @drac109
    @drac109 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just a few quick things to note about Sneak Attack.
    1: You get an additional d6 roll for every other level. So a Sneak Attack at lvl 1 would be 1d6, at lvl 3 would be 2d6, at lvl 5 would be 3d6, so on and so forth. Keep that in mind if you're starting at a higher level or if/when you lvl up in a campaign.
    2: Sneak Attack can trigger for both finesse weapons and ranged weapons, not just finesse. Meaning you could get it with that crossbow of yours.
    3: Some features allow you to guarantee advantage under certain circumstances on your attack roll, thus triggering Sneak Attack. Such as Steady Aim (optional Rogue feature, ask your DM about it) and Assassinate (Assassin archetype feature), so keep that in mind during combat.

    • @HeartLockHex
      @HeartLockHex  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct aside point one, Sneak Attack by standard rules gives an extra d6 to it's damage at those listed levels. Not d20s to hit.

    I'm intrested in this because I tryed making a general goblin/kobols hunter.
    Personally I went hill dwarf hunter ranger with short swords and took gobliniods, beats, monstrositys and kobolds as flavored enemy.
    Then took horde breaker, escape the hoard, whirlwind attack and stand against the tide since quantity is way more important then quality of attacks agianst little guys.

    • @HeartLockHex
      @HeartLockHex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thanks for the comment! Love the idea of a pure hoard-breaker, such a neat set of abilities if your DM works with you!
      Yup, there are dozens are excellent builds out there for anti-swarms, but Goblin Slayer himself is a bit more versatile and his whole "rage" concept was what drilled into me the idea he had to be a barbarian. Honestly, if I was going to take this concept and improve upon it, I'd probably go Variant Human, Rogue Scout 4, Zealot Barbarian 16 and simplify things.
      So many fun ways to build characters in the game, makes it a joy to keep dabbling with them.

    • @HeartLockHex

      Always tons of ways to make a character. He also has the benefit of being the character that's being played that somehow is able to refuse the luck of the dice. ;) So I built him more around the idea of what he's seen doing than what he's listed as. Though there is some ranger in there!

  • @syntheticsamurai
    @syntheticsamurai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I like the idea of starting as a rogue and some barbarian levels for the redeye moments but I feel like a lot of the rest of this could be explained easier with the fighter archetype battle master with its various maneuvers instead of trying to asspull his skill set out of a scatterbrained build. Like as an evasion tank instead of constantly leaving combat and reentering which he doesn't really do the riposte maneuver is closer to his relentless fighting style in the thick of things, as well as the sweeping attack maneuver for those wide scything swings that tend to take out more than one goblin while the camera banks around in slow motion. Likewise the second wind bonus action could be used for that fall 7 times get up 8 thing GS has going for him without having to IC handwave magic and it OOC clashing with rage. To say nothing of it's level 7 skill "know your enemy" where you can learn about your foe by watching from a distance as he does before every nearly encounter in the series.

    • @HeartLockHex
      @HeartLockHex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's always tons of ways to make a character! I went over several different ideas in the video, and certainly had plenty of other ideas as well. If you wanted to be more mechanically superior there's *alot* that could be changed, honestly. I just went with focusing on the thematic! With the skillset I have now, I'd honestly go with scout/battlemaster/zealot multiclass, personally.

    - cut the legs of any goblin who dares try to escape your wrath (goblins in d&d can disengage as a bonus action, so being able to ignore that AND stop their movement is paramount)

      Easy. Order of the Lycan Bloodhunter paired with Path of the Beast Barbarian. How much you put into either depends on whether you want to lean more into being unkillable(Barbarian) or capable of dealing damage and hunting things down(Bloodhunter).
      as for your power fantasy craving, IDK about your DM or gaming group, but our table has a rule that's based on 2C Gaming's Epic Legacy rulebooks(which I highly recommend for anyone), where it's all one campaign world(DM'd by all people at the table so others can take breaks and play) over the course of millenia, and while there is no level limit(meaning your character could take the time to become level 20 in every class if you survived long enough), Your character can die of old age unless they have a feature that prevents it. Additionally, Epic characters and mythic/deific enemies are a real possibility, and someone who is level 20 in every class will always lose to someone with even a single epic level. It's not that a level 20 is weak, it's that Epic level is that much stronger, as they are capable of killing a god in their true form(Yes, you could try kill Asmodeus' True form at Epic Level; chances are you'd fail tho). On top of that, Mythic and Deific enemies are often on an even higher tier, and choosing to become Epic Level is about your only shot against such threats... yet, the moment you gain your 10th Epic level... You fade into the canals of history in one way or another, depending on which class you took epic levels in. Never to be seen or played by again... such is the price of ascended power.

    Edit: Oh just realized Primal Knowledge is from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything... Still would you recommend it?

      This video is quite old yes, if I recall Cauldron was still in the works at the time. But in any case, I don't see why not! These builds aren't on rails, pick and choose what you like for inspiration!

    Can you do Juzo Inui from No Guns Life?

      If you don't own the books then the options won't pop up for you unfortunately, aside from that I'm not sure what could be wrong. Maybe make sure content sharing is enabled, if you're in a campaign looking to play the build! Thanks for watching!

    That's a very good character building, focused on roleplay options matching mechanic options to build the Goblin Slayer.
    Just one think I disagree and want to point out, too: The Goblin Slayer motivation is not purely vengeance, as he truly believes that eliminating Goblins from the world is a worthy life goal and that the world will be a better place for it. You can surely presume that this world view comes from trauma, but nevertheless it is not something done for pure self-serving satisfaction.
    Also he never trained as a rogue in his life. He's a prime example of a fighter through and through, with Ranger just enough to get the Favored Enemy feature. No lockpicking, no sneak attacks (until he met the cleric he always fought solo and never been stealthy). For all the tactics he uses, the specialization w/ the tactical dice has it covered.

      Can always build him however you think is best really! I find ranger as a whole relatively pointless as a class personally, as I find most of what they can do I can do better with other combinations (ie. Scout Rogue + Any spellcasting/martial combo really). Thanks for the comment!

    I' would call Goblin slayer extremely cunning due to all the new and outside of the box methods he comes up with and employs to tackle problems and he does actually maintain his equipment but prefers the stink for practical reasons

      Not sure what you're referring to but cunning is a very vague term. Don't think I ever said he wasn't creative and quick witted. Thanks for the comment, hope you enjoyed!

    I'm pretty sure the guy wears Playe Armor, so maybe we should replace the Barbarian and Ranger Levels with a Brute Fighter as you would do more damage and at 9th Level you get Indomitable which basically being too stubborn to die.

      Plate is far far more metal than what good ol gobbie slayer wears. Would interfere with his stealth and manuverability as well. But as always build them as you like! This is just meant to give ideas.

    Just a quick question, where did you pick up Goblin from? You have halfling as your racial language, and under common as your background exotic language. From my sources, haunted one doesn't offer two languages.

      It's been quite a long time since I worked on this but haunted one is 2 skills, 2 languages. So I'd assume there. Ranger also offers a language of your favored enemies. Thank you for the comment! Hope you enjoyed the video!

      In agreement honestly. Goblin Slayer is already spread pretty thin statistically.
