I have watched a lot of videos on proper technique for the clean. This is far and away the best one. This guy is an awesome trainer; I wish I could train under him.
The best coaches/teachers are the ones who make you understand in very simple terms because it’s actually often very simple. Amazing instructions. Thank you!
Great video. I love the prep work that you put into young athletes. This will pave how they continue to train for their entire career. Great start to their training to help them maximize their potential.
This is such a brilliant video 👏 thank you for talking about how to fix flexibility issues, I've been struggling with my wrists but had no idea to stretch then
I may not give up on cleans after all. I am unable to catch or front squat in the power position. I can only do them if I'm "standing tall". This sheds some light on my issue. Thank you.
0:19 Oh shit he stepped over the bar. Regardless...excellent instruction on the progressions. When it comes to cleans, there are do's and don'ts and thankfully had one coach in my life instruct me on these principles. Thanks for posting!
Great video! If I may critique just one thing - at 8:29 when you demo the full clean, you're catching the bar at the top of your stance. When you have a heavy load, it's easier to catch it as you're on your way down into a squat. Sort of like getting underneath the bar, rather than muscling the bar all the way up to your shoulders and then going down into your squat.
This is sadly an aftereffect of his way of teaching high pulls. You don't high pull in cleans. The only Pull work you do is to the bellybutton, from there it's all about dropping under the bar. But because he's taught himself and others to high pull he's wasting energy pulling it up so extremely high he doesn't have to duck under with lighter loads.
If we’re getting technical, he really should be pulling himself under the bar since dropping underneath it will probably result in it crashing onto his shoulders and not being able to decelerate and dropping it
@@PhiyackYuh can't show, but I have my athletes do Russian style high pulls. You do a regular clean all the way up until you make contact. After that you keep pulling with elbows up and shoulders shrugged slightly but no higher than bellybutton height. That's where you have them hold the position for half a second fully extended on the toes to simulate the final pull of the clean before you're supposed to drop under. I could also let them do Le Li La pulls (panda Pulls) which are Pulls that look like they go higher but you drop in squat stance before returning to the clean stance in a fluid motion. This however is very advanced.
Wow! Very thorough, yet succinct. I am going to incorporate this tomorrow. I have been doing shotty clean and jerks for too long. Time to tighten my form and work on power cleans.
Still using this in 2023. The mobility aspect of that front rack can't be emphasized enough. The TRX, bands , T-Spine, and floor drills for wrist mobility are what made the catch safe for my lower arms as loads exceeded bodyweight.
Great efforts and nice demonstration. I struggle all the time with the part of lifting the bar by hips. I hope you have a good clue how to make it easier so that I can increase bb weight
I hate deadlifts. I pay strict attention to form but I always get sciatica. But these bad boys...well, they make me fitter, faster and leaner. I've never had an injury from a power clean, and I doubt I will now thanks to this tutorial! Brilliant stuff.
I've been training this lift for many months and still have not been able to get it. I have wrist and lat mobility issues and I have a hard time catching. Thank you so much for this video. It's understandable and reproducible.
thank the Lord ....progressions....and you eliminated a lot of the "cheats" that are out there....here in my town I run into tons of teens being taught the "cheats" and really poor form...great job and great video
Hmm. I started power cleans last week and I'm pretty close to the way he does it. I do start with the bar elevated a few inches because it's a new movement and I also don't squat at the end. Once I feel more confident I may incorporate those into the routine. And needless to say I'm starting very light but actually have no desire to go heavy anyhow.
I'd like to post the link to this as a resource for my own high school students. 14 minutes is a long time for most HS students though. Has anyone written up a time index? For example, "bar pops out, go to minute X, elbows not high enough go to minute X". Thanks
Great video. I've never cared what others though about me and I've been bringing a steel pipe (from Home Depot: 1 in. x 6 ft. Black Steel) filled with sand to my gym. I have been using the steel pipe for awhile now, practicing the correct posture/movements for this exercise because I do not want to damage my back.
Not trying to be too critical- but in that second pull the bar needs to continue its path UPWARDS, not OUT from the hips. That way it stays close to the body.
“You haven’t taught until they’ve learned.”
Very well said.
I like how he addresses every possible mistake someone might make with regards to form and technique.
Exactly, my power clean went up 15lbs immediately after watching this
You can tell he’s an amazing coach/trainer
It’s a beautiful thing to see a true specialist at work.
Good tips for beginners, not actual oly lifting, the emphasis should be in speed and technique not ques
I wouldn't call him a true specialist. He knows enough to go over the basics with highschoolers. He's not an Olympic weightlifting coach.

What an great teacher. He’s also crazy strong, throwing that weight around like it’s nothing.

Best clean progression explanation I have ever seen.

He’s just casually teaching with a loaded bar. 😅🤯
He probably cleans 120kg😂 I don't think 40kg might bother him
I have no doubt this guy was an NCO in the military at some point in his life. Awesome video!!!
I thought this sounded like a good way to teach a recruit .... nothing wrong with clean and simple
He definitely has that cadence good NCOs have.
No that’s called college football
Jesse bruh, he means at one point in his life.
High and tight should tell everything about him..🤣🤣🤣 the type of dude wont release his guys until 1800..🤣🤣

It’s not a private school. It is a public school about 35 minutes from my house

Focus on form and safety, absolutely critical with young athletes.
Lol. My highschool weight room had one squat rack, some rusty dumbbells, and a leg press machine.
