    Sounds good! I grew up with Randy as my neighbor . Eventually I took lessons from him,he was a great guy an of course teacher. I was actually shocked when he brought back the first album! And of course the second album was even better! He was great and would have been even better and he was just getting started! Antway ,keep his name alive and always let the younger generation know who Randy Rhoads was!!

    • @EyeShotFirst
      @EyeShotFirst ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikehunt576 The secret sauce was those Altec's. I'd argue that speakers will shape your sound more than what brand amp you have, at least one you're pumping that much distortion through.

    • @mikehunt576
      @mikehunt576 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EyeShotFirst no, they used altecs cause the stage group from the union in the UK sharon hired insisted they would match the altec house and stage monitors, the tone ws all due to a 1959 plexi boosted by 3 channel asymmetrical diode pedals, the vol-the mxr eq and a mxr distortion plus, the cbs where loaded with marshall v30s and one altec in series for the house mix, the cabs where also set up in series instead of parallel which explains why some delay too place when turned up..
      Randys tone then is no way different today if you use plexis, they are loud and hard to boost with out more then one pedal, cause they are one channel., so symmetrical clipping pedals alike the amp is the key, a tube screamer would boost too much low end so the mxr or a boss sd-1 gives that boost.

    From a acoustically trained fan, by teachers of Randy's, I'm a Diary of a Madman song nut, "Oh my 👍 your Arpeggio scales, taps, trills and bends are spot on." The effects are almost as Randy himself we're playing them. Could you imagine what Randy would've accomplished today? Can you please pick up on his legacy? That would be amazing 🤩 to hear!

    Randy was the original inspiration of me playing guitar. When I was 10, for Christmas, my parents bought my brother and I "stereo systems" - tape deck, receiver and record player on top. I got two cassettes that year - Blizzard of Ozz and Moving Pictures. Both are still on heavy rotation on my playlists. Randy was such an amazing talent and I haven't been able mimic his tone like you did. Great job!!

    Would’ve loved to have heard that setup through a 4X12 with Altecs which were Randy’s choice of speakers. Then you’d get that high mid scratchy sound Randy had. Not my choice for a sound but what Randy did was absolutely stunning!

    • @EyeShotFirst
      @EyeShotFirst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's amazing when you think about iconic guitarists and their choices of equipment. You'll try the same exact setup, and it just doesn't always work for you. It's like Dimebag's Randalls weren't amps a lot of metal guys were using until he came along, and even then...they got kind of knocked aside by your Mesa Boogies and the like. I've heard that Randy had a little Fender Champ that he thought was the best amp on the planet. Loved it more than the Marshalls Ozzy's people were pushing him to use. But yeah, the altecs are really a good 50% of his tone. That's why his EQ configuration just sounds so muddy on any other cabinet. You'd probably want to raise the high's a bit with a different cabinet.

      That particular model of Altec is pretty hard to find. i acquired one. They are extremely harsh... but with a jumpered Plexi and some patience playing with EQ, you find Randy's tone. It just works for his live sound. But many people wouldn't choose that speaker.

    You pretty much got it spot on. A big problem I had with finding Rhoads' sound with one of my amps was treble and presence or lack thereof. His sound is incredibly trebly and presence-y. You can get near his sound with most tube amps but it takes a shit ton of patience and tinkering to figure it out honestly. I did not realize that one of the problems I was having was because the treble and presence were set too low. The amp was darker than what I had thought but it was one of those situations where you couldn't really tell. Great job with your iteration of his sound for sure!

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been experimenting with SIR mods #34, 36 etc... Essentially, the amp is modded using treble peakers between gain stages. The treble peaker consist of a 470pf capacitor in parallel with a 470ohm resistor. The cap allows highs to bypass the resistor. The resistor attenuates the rest of the signal. Slash had the same thing. Highs over the top.

    • @AvnerRosenstein-ULTRA-LXV
      @AvnerRosenstein-ULTRA-LXV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@qua7771 I definitely agree...High's are just ridiculous in their sounds compared to what a normal rig can achieve. You have to have everything just right. Which leads me to believe that this is why so many people hate Randy's sound.

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AvnerRosenstein-ULTRA-LXV His tone sounded good in the mix, but the isolated tracks sound like a bee in a beer can.
      It sounded good in the car stereos of the day if you were smoking weed I guess. I wouldn't know.
      Anyway, I had an amp modded like that, but I undid it. It would feed back in a bad way, and was generally hard to control. The attack was like ninja throwing stars coming at you. I'd stick with using the treble, and presence controls, or possibly an eq pedal.

    Dude, I thought that was freaking fantastic playing! I don't know what you're talking about. Sheesh! And the tone was great too. You kinda got there another way but you got there. The two things that Randy used without fail was this beat up old Distortion plus with a Germanium Diode in it that was just one of those pedals that happened to kick ass. And he would push the mids on the MXR EQ at around 3K I think it was. But whatever. You sound great, bro. Thanks for sharing that.

    Love it. The key is that Marshall opened up and then pushed with some dirt. You could probably have notched the mids a bit more with an eq pedal and the TS9 ditching the OD-3 but still a totally inspiring tone and close enough!

    • @FEAROWNAGE

    Randy did not use a plexi. He used a JMP which was a master volume amp with the preamp tubes cascaded one into the other for more distortion from the tubes. A jumpered plexi is running the preamp tubes in parallel (not as much distortion). Also, Randy used an MXR Distortion + not a tube screamer.

    • @trevor4533
      @trevor4533 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but Plexi is kind of a catch all umbrella term for 4 hole Marshalls these days.
      edit: Also, Randy's 1959 Super Lead JMP was a non master volume amp. Channel i is stock 1980 non mv. But the cascade mod allows the volumes to work in tandem on channel ii to increase preamp gain. The 2203 and 2204 JMPs are master volume amps.
