The Arcade Archive ports allow you to press a button to add credits, and a separate button to start a game. Only Metal Slug 4 and 5 would have an option to allow a separate button to do a rapid fire. If you were to use the same button for repeated shooting like in 1-3, the firing can be delayed.

There are 1cc (One Coin Clear) runs of Metal Slug 1 you can watch on TH-cam where the players have some badass optimizations for getting through levels, they make good use of the invincibility frames from when you get out of the tank. Also don't forget you can throw regular grenades while in the tank and is recommended to do that sometimes because it's faster than using the canon, just hold down/crouch and press "throw bombs"/C button, you can kill the first boss in under 8 seconds doing just that.
Also I do not recommend playing Metal Slug 1, 2 and X via the Anthology release, it introduces terrible input lag on those games (for some reason 3-6 are more responsive) and the emulation release of the collection on PS4/5 adds even more lag which makes it super unplayable.

I beat metal slug 3 with 1 death but it took me 6 Months first struggle was on the 2 mission the aliens boss with there bubbles and than was the last mission in the space git I hated it try it out its fun and one of my favourite metal slugs
